Yeah, well that's not saying much for Shaker Lakes. Where I grew up, I can guarantee you there were no rapes of anyone walking to school or I would have heard about it. It was a very small town and news like that travels. And why did you put "rapes" in quotes like that. Are you trying to say this girl wasn't raped?

There were several alleged.  One in particular, my sophomore year at Shaker, a girl and guy are dating a guy, the girl accuses the boyfriend of rape.  All of a sudden the "victim" is in boarding school for a year and returns Senior year..  Fast forward to our class reunion and the "victim" have a 12 year old child.  ImJustSayin'

^That's really interesting.  My wife and I have an ongoing discussion about where we're going to buy a home and start a family.  I'm pushing for Ohio City, but my wife isn't convinced it's a good place to raise a family.  One of her biggest concerns is schools, but the people in Ohio City seem to be really proactive and are really trying to create a high quality inner city neighborhood.

The community that has been created over the past 5 years in the neighborhood has been something that none of us ever thought would be possible. It all started with the Ohio City Babysitting Coop. It has only snow balled since. There has been a lot of positive press around this:

(CNN) -- A Cleveland couple faces child endangerment charges after giving away their neglected 2-year-old girl, authorities said.

The parents were arrested Thursday after authorities learned that they gave away the toddler 10 days earlier, according to Cleveland police reports.

Police got a tip Thursday and went to the parents' home, where they found an emaciated pit bull and fecal matter. The child was nowhere to be found, police said.

Officers learned the suspects had given the child away to friends in their neighborhood, who said they agreed to take custody of her if the couple agreed to get help for their alleged drug addiction, according to police reports.

^ Disgusting...and even worse having just read about a similar incident in Cincy (where the poor kid was beaten to death by his dad).  WTF is wrong with these people.

I think the father should be neutered

Just unreal. And it really stings when you go through what we went through to have a child, and how some people just pop them out like a chicken lays eggs and then don't give 2 shits about what happens to them.

And on top of that, it burns me that people think gay people shouldn't be allowed to adopt BECAUSE THEY WILL BE BAD PARENTS. NOT LIKE ALL THESE WONDERFUL STRAIGHT COUPLES THAT HAD THEM, beating them or selling them for drugs.

Couldn't agree more!

I agree, and at least they weill have PARENT(S) and not just a parenT. Just from pure observation, homosexual couples seem to be more nurturing towards their children than their heterosexual counterparts.

Well, they're not MORE nurturing, but I have theorized for a long time now that adoptive parents and parents (like me and mr. RNR) who struggle with fertility and go through IVF to get pregnant very much have something in common that other parents do not - they worked, really, really hard to get that child into their lives. That child is wanted and loved to a more extreme degree than perhaps many "oops" babies of hetero couples. Whether the couple is straight or gay that adopts, I would imagine they feel the same way that we did and do about it - that every day, you just feel so, so lucky to have gotten that child into your life. The amount of struggle and expense, stress and worry for adoptive and IVF parents is just much, much higher than it is for traditional hetero couples who get pregnant with no trouble, who aren't even trying sometimes, and unless you've gone through the struggles that adoptive or IVF parents have gone through, you just can't understand what a big deal it is for them.

Just from pure observation, homosexual couples seem to be more nurturing towards their children than their heterosexual counterparts.

 So stereotyping heterosexuals is OK?

Shameful. I can't imagine being that consumed by something that I neglect my child, especially when they are that young...

Something is fishy.  You just open the door for a complete stranger?  Something is missing or either this was not well written.

Plenty of people open the door when someone knocks on it, thinking it may be someone selling something, or asking for donations, or promoting a candidate or issue, etc.

Nope.  I just open it..... while trying to hold back my snarling, foaming at the mouth 100 pound dog.  No worries at all.

People underestimate the level of detterent and resulting security owning a dog gives you.  In fact, I found a puppy down in Collinwood the other week and couldn't locate the owner despite trying my best (hanging signs, posting online, checking lost-found in Cleveland, Euclid and Cuyahoga County).  In the end, I gave him to a guy who just moved here from Boston renovating homes in University Heights.  He said that the piping was stolen out of the home because it looks too vacant (even though he lives there).  He asked the cops what he should do and they said "buy a dog".  Lucky for him, I gave him one for free.... a beautiful lab-terrier mix who was about 5 months old.

Yeah MTS, you forget that most people are still the type that leave the back door unlocked, leave their car doors unlocked, and often with keys and/or purse inside, sitting out in the driveway.

I'm not saying it was smart or that I'd do it.  I'm just saying that it doesn't instantly make me think that the story is fabricated.

OK, I meant fishy and not fabricated.  I don't read into that based on the fact that she opened the door.  I think that people open the door for strangers commonly enough that it doesn't instantly throw up red flags.

Id have to agree. Other stories in the past have seemed fishy and the truth came out eventually, but this one doesn't appear fishy to me.

Never open the door for strangers! If you do, you deserve what you get.

Hey, I get mad when my neighbors let my mother into the building without checking with me first to verify! She's welcome to visit me anytime, but only I, she, and my family knows that. My neighbors should never let anyone into our building without first checking to see if that visitor is welcomed by the person they claim to be visiting. Our building has locked doors throughout. We have security cameras in the building's hallways and elsewhere which I can look at on my TV. There's a peep hole with a wide-angle lens in my solid-hardwood door. in And I keep a weapon near the door along with my three killer attack cats! :) But seriously.....

If you want me in jail and you in the morgue, then by all means, force your way into my home.  :shoot:

that just the first line of defense, I want to stun them so that I can slowly and painfully make them regret breaking into my home!  You know, stuff like heating needles on the stove then sticking them thru their eye lids and one other very sensitive appendage!  Dripping water into their ear every 30 seconds.  I could go on, but dont want to give away my secrets.

That's OK, I just saw the movie about you last night.....

That movie didn't do well at the Box Office, but it was much better than I expected.

Sort of a crime related question. The scooby foo unoccupied house next door to me has recently had the side door forced open. Like a good citizen I've referred it to the police, who told me they were referring it to whatever department to come and secure the door. It's been a week now and the door is still ajar. What city/county agency do I need to call and bother until they come fix it?

Call your city council person and have all your neighbors call as well.  Call the local precinct and the Mayor office.  In the interum, maybe you and your neighbors can seal it so that nobody else will know it's open and vacant?

I'd recommend calling the City of Cleveland Department of Building and Housing complaint line.  Also, follow up with a second phone call to the Mayor's Action Center.  You can either google the numbers for both or just call 664-2000 and have the operator direct your call.

I don't know that it will do you any good to call the councilman.

If it's really a problem, it's not unreasonable nor unheard of to get a piece of plywood and box of screws and board the door yourself.

Cleveland: Police investigate two shootings

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Police are investigating a few shootings that occured Saturday night.

The first one happened just after 8 p.m. on Woodhill Road.  A man was shot in the leg. Cleveland Police and RTA officer say the shooting happened in a store. The victim got in an argument with a store clerk. The clerk then shot the man.

The victim was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center by EMS and the clerk was taken to jail.

Two hours later on the city's westside, police responded to another location for a man shot on W. 51st Street and Clark Avenue.

A bit dangerous, if the door is open because squatters have arrived.

I'd call the councilman's office -- the ward office. Depends on who your councilperson is, but most are pretty good at getting attention to problems. Also, I'd call your neighborhood's community development corporation which works closely with the city inspectors. Some of the CDCs have their own staff to oversee building conditions although they often lack the code enforcement abilities of a city inspector.

In Cleveland, councilpersons are like neighborhood mayors and the CDCs are like their administrative staffs with the CDC boards as the neighborhood councils. Considering that each CDC oversees a neighborhood population the size of most suburbs (15,000 to 30,000 people), this comparison may not be too far off.

ok, so no real crime has happened, but this is mostly for KJP, who has trouble believing that I am apparently the Most Harrassed Person in Cleveland.

Walking to pick up lunch today. In big, ugly black down coat with big hat and hood up over hat, so you could barely even see my face. Went by a black guy who veered into my visual path purposely and then when he got to just in front of me he said, "where you goin, gorgeous?" Seriously? Not a block later, ever aware of my surroundings, I noticed a white guy suddenly walking just behind me on my L hand side, and I was keeping him in my periph vision when all of a sudden he veered toward me so sharply, I seriously thought he was attacking me and I jumped out of the way and put my hand up and turned around like WTF, ripping my hood down with the other hand so I could see better. I think he was crazy, and had randomly decided to start shouting directions at a stranger who was parallel parking, to help them get into the space. Once they were parked he kept walking. I was just like WTF.

This happens to me ALL THE TIME, stuff like this.

Also, car break-ins in Lakewood:

About a dozen car break-ins were reported in the northern half of Lakewood on Nov. 29.

The first report was taken at 1000 block of Homewood Drive, where there was a vehicle broken into, but nothing was reported stolen. A couple hours later, police received another call from the house next door — several items were stolen from the car.

The second call came from 13900 block of Edgewater Drive — at around 8:45 a.m. — and again nothing was taken. In the 14600 block of Lake Avenue, the resident told police that some change was stolen.

According to random, loud, yelling dude on W. 25th at 1AM last night, "The time of the white man is over." A disinterested bystander stated, loudly, that he was "not afraid", eliciting twenty to thirty repetitions of the original statement, along with "you know it" and "you're done".

Well, we had a good run.

LOL!!!!!

Maybe he had just travelled to our time via a Jules Vern-esque time machine from the 19th century, and he was so titillated by the libidinous manner in which you exposed your ankles that he was compelled to confront you in a manner I am sure was contrary to his gentlemanly upbringing.

You trollop!

Yeah, except I had knee high boots on. Strike.

As hubz1124 said, whats going on on the West side!

Although I showed a few pages back the stats indicating the increases in crime (for you Clevelanders in denial), and once again in just about all areas, with the exception of Ohio City and Tremont.

But the continued spree and listing this morning including places like Lakewood and even Brookpark (and in one case Westlake, since likely thats where the stores were that they wanted to steal from)  I wonder if it is just a shifting of crime or a general increase and spreading.

At least a couple have East side connections.

Nothing like more motivation for the whiteys and middle class to move even further west in droves.  :-(

Theres a few in the first part of this, plus other things from the past few days, weeks....
