p.s. EVERY section of Cleveland is adjacent to an area where violent crime happens.

Wait, what?  It is?  holy $hit how did I end up here?  My realtor lied to me!

Now don't go and  resort to violence...

I wouldn't go as far as blaming the mayor. He's been around for four months and there's no way he's had time for the intricacies of the many departments he needs to fix. He certainly has atleast spent

that story smells funny.  She was supposed to be in her room.  SHe clearly snuck out to meet with someone.  That someone killed her.

Even still, I drive through that area all the time, I always felt like it was a pretty solid neighborhood.

so its looks like they found the suspect.  Talk about a dads worst nightmare.  Not only is this girl sneaking out to hang with this cat and do whatever, but then he kills her? Allegedly.

If it was my daughter, the little eff would be well advised to turn himself in, before I found him.

I thought I saw that there was another one on W. 107th last night.

Man. That cannot happen. I've been saying, federal sweep for drugs and unregihstered guns across Cuyahoga ounty. That's tax payer spending I can get down with.

^ I used to joke about the National Guard patrolling the city streets.  The new cops can't come fast enough.  It's a shame we waste so much money on National Defense and ignore our own cities.

Is there gun registration in Cleveland?  There isn't in the rest of the county, nor in Ohio.

i wouldnt know, i dont play with those barbaric objects.  I made false assumption.

i wouldnt know, i dont play with those barbaric objects.  I made false assumption.

Mine's never been registered.  There's no requirement to do so, and therefore no method for doing so.

Any of you journalists out there, feel free to do a public records request, but from what i ve been told:

Cleveland population 2000 478,000 = apprx. 2000 CPD officers

Cleveland population 2010 398,000 = apprx. 1300 CPD officers

Those figures aren't exactly proportional. All Cleveland Officials care about is responding to criminal activity. Preventing/Solving crimes is not the priority for this city unfortunately. All they choose to fund is someone to take the report, not prevent or solve it via detectives or specialized units. Unfortunately, despite the mass hirings, they are only in a struggle to replace mass retirements, there is virtually no gain in CPD force

Rangers' Scheppers Attacked on Walk in Cleveland

Associated Press

CLEVELAND July 27, 2013 (AP)

The Texas Rangers say pitcher Tanner Scheppers sustained facial bruises after being attacked while walking in downtown Cleveland this week.

The Rangers say Scheppers suffered a bruised eye and contusion Thursday night. He was unavailable to pitch in Friday night's 11-8 loss to the Indians in 11 innings.

The Rangers say the incident occurred a few blocks from the team's hotel. The club arrived in Cleveland after playing an afternoon game on Thursday in Texas, and Scheppers was getting dinner when the attack occurred.

This really aggravates me.

The player in town decides to go out and enjoy the city and that is what he gets. Terrible press for a city that doesn't need any more.

I agree, this really is a horrible story. What the heck.

I agree, this really is a horrible story. What the heck.

Since he wasn't robbed, you have to think this is some drunk little Tribe fan punks?

He didn't even pursue charges. There is clearly more to the story than reported. Was he drunk getting into it with (drunk)  Indians fans?

Or do you think he was actually punched randomly by some guys downtown. Nobody deserves getting cold clocked. That's just cowardly. I'm just saying things are rarely that simple.

Where exactly was he?  And what time of night was it?  I would lean to the suspicion that there is more to the story than he is letting on.  Not to say that this type of thing doesn't happen.... but not so much to guys that are 6'4 200.

I've never heard of random punchings.  I can imagine situations that might lead to it, but nobody opens with that.

On the Tribe telecast, they said it happened at 2:30 a.m., he refused to give the cops information when they arrived, refused medical attention and refused to file a report.  An unnamed source also said "he had ten chances to walk away."

The local media needs to step up and dig into this a little more.  If it is what he says it is, then so be it.  The story has already went national.  But if this is him trying to save face for being out past curfew to drink it up and then getting his a## kicked.....

Go figure A. J. Pierzynski was with Tanner when the incident occurred.  I'm suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure it was a sucker punch  :drunk: :drunk:

What has the local media have to go on?

“The preliminary investigation reveals that on Friday, July 26, at approximately 2:30 a.m. Texas Ranger pitcher Tanner Scheppers was involved in a physical altercation at Panini’s Bar located on W. 6th Street. Further investigation reveals that the altercation was called in by Downtown Alliance workers and that Third District officers responded to the scene to investigate. Once on scene officers attempted to get information from Scheppers for a report however, he refused to provide information and refused to make a police report. Further, officers called for EMS and he refused medical attention and EMS was disregarded. The officers then conveyed Scheppers and another male to the Ranger’s team hotel.

I presume, his agent/manager, publicist, and the Texas organization told him to keep his mouth shut.  This is called damage control 101 - Silence.

^Police sources? Bouncers/club owners?  You make it sound like Scheppers was the only witness.

Anyway, happy to hear this wasn't a random,  unprovoked attack.

No, what I mean is his "people", the Texas organization and possibly the Indians all circled the wagons and went into "clean up" mode.  No police report, means that they make this "disappear" with little damage and handle it internally.

Yes, Yahoo..... Cleveleand is owed an apology.  How about you start by putting the follow up story on your front page (as you did the initial 'story') and not buried in your sports page, which nobody visits!

The one aspect of the original story which really irks me is Sheppers telling the media that when he told the police what happened, the police said "it happens all the time"......... leaving the impression that if you visit downtown Cleveland, you are putting yourself at legitimate risk of a totally random and unprovoked assault.

Absent him filing a false police report, the City can't do much legally, if anything at all.  But the City can throw a temper tantrum fit for national headlines.  Hold a press conference, at the very least, once the real investigation is complete.  Send the police report to every major outlet.  Get MLB involved.  This is BS

Honey, it's Yahoo.  Who is really reading it???  Seriously!

It's a non story.  As I said before, "hush" money makes people forget things.

Here's the headline to the link that is STILL up.

Rangers' Scheppers attacked on walk in Cleveland

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/rangers-scheppers-attacked-walk-cleveland-224426661--mlb.html

When I went to that link on Saturday night, there were THOUSANDS of comments...... mostly of the racial and disparaging tone.  I'll give Yahoo! credit that it appears they have eradicated most of them.  But you can't stop the hate completely....

No physical description of the thugs? C'mon tell us what they were wearing and what color they were!!! Selective reporting by the MEDIA!

Now you know why I left - LeBron James

Sounds like the work of the "Ghost of Trayvon"!

Cleveland is economically destitute. Before traveling to Cleveland for tourism consider security and if you must move about at night, you need to consider hiring a guard.

If I had a son he would look like Tanner Scheppers!

If Obama had several sons....

Cleveland is the next Detroit.

Well what do you expect from a northern Democratic bunch of losers. Bet they were Eric Holder black kids! They do no wrong cause they're depressed.

The Justice dept should investigate this hate crime. Or maybe George Zimmerman had the right idea , Look up Ohio conceal and carry laws and read the first thing you come to .This is a very dangerous city stay in your hotels clevelanders don't deserve to meet you

Sounds like "The Knockout Game" or "Polar Bear Hunting" to me... and I'm correct...

hate crime.

So now that the Rangers have a "full understanding" (which they are apparently not sharing with the media), the team and Sheppers are "moving on" and consider the incident "done" and over with.  So let's get this straight.  The original story was that he was walking back to the hotel after grabbing some dinner (implying this happened around 7pm) and he was sucker punched by several young males for no apparent reason.  Now, the incident occured while he was "out to dinner" at 2:30am with teammates AJ Pierzynski and Joe Nathan.  Local reports are they were with a bunch of females at the bar....... errrrr, I mean restaraunt.  All three are married.

Nothing to see here...... except the spit all over the City's face.

You kids don't understand "PR".  What did I say earlier?  This isn't a diss to Cleveland, it's keeping the BS that happened in the Rangers organization quiet.

(professional hat on) I can tell you first hand, it is not that difficult to make things "go away" or to explain to someone "what is in their best interests" (professional hat off)

I fully understand the concept..... but the City, the DCA, etc have NO obligation to eat a poop sandwich so the Ranger players can save face..... not after the BS impression of our downtown they allowed the national media to run with

I agree with Hts121, this sort of thing should be directly addressed.  We can't let national media paint a negative picture based on false assumptions.

I third that motion.

$ talks. As I said earlier, the players management, publicist and the Rangers organization probably got to all involved.

What you guys think should take place morally and what most likely happened are planets apart.

Also, this isn't something that has only happens in Cleveland.

Based on what I do, I've had "contacts" reach out to me to help facilitate a "situation"  it's not uncommon.

They guy lied, now it's a "dead issue".  Again, this is a situation where you all are being over sensitive.  Let it go.  We (NE Ohioans) make bigger deals out of issues, that is why the media picks it up and runs with it.

^ Except that Cleveland's taken a few black eyes lately, and this just compounds the national perception that somehow Cleveland is 'unsafe'. I'd like to see someone from the Mayor's office address this.

I can agree with that.  The Mayor should be calling MLB to get involved.  He and Fitzgerald should negotiate with MLB, at the Rangers expense, to promote Cleveland and all our recent developments.

Are you implying that City Hall was bribed?  The Plain Dealer too?  DCA?  GCP?  I could maybe buy into the idea of a hush up being coordinated from the get-go..... but not after Sheppers painted the false image of the City and the story made national headlines.

What I might believe is that the truth of the story is somewhere inbetween Sheppers version and the Cleveland Scene version and the City has decided to leave it at that.  His original version was discredited, and maybe they feel (for whatever reason) that it can do no good because, no matter how you tell the story, an out-of-towner got his a$$ kicked in downtown.

Reread what I wrote.  Bribes no.  Suggestions, yes.  The DCA/GCP wouldn't be involved.

Have you ever watched the show scandal?

I have "birds" all over.  Based on Professional information i've requested, a "clean man" has been dispatched.  That is why the story has gone cold.  This is why my posts from today have been written as such.

Again, I think Clevelanders are being overly sensitive. Nobody is thinking Cleveland is bad or dangerous - except Clevelanders.

MTS, you keep saying people don't understand PR, but that doesn't seem very responsive to anything anyone else is saying. I think we all understood from the begging that Scheppers and the Rangers were going to try to downplay/spin the story as best as they can.  You keep saying these people know how to make a story go away, but the opposite happened: it got national headlines, and the exposure of the lame lie also got national attention (though it can't undo the smear).

Whether based on fact or fiction, Cleveland DOES have the perception of being bad and dangerous.  Look at the comments I posted above.  Look at the "why is [fill in the city] so...." google search thread.  This year has been particularly damaging.  We have enough legitimate concern with violence to keep us in the spotlight.  We really don't need this shite right now.

IMO, the DCA should be all over this.  DCA is all about creating a better perception.  It is right up their alley.

^And as you hoped, local media (Scene) did dig in and helped break/disseminate the competing story of what happened.

Sweetie.  The original story made headlines, because he lied.  Once they found out it was a lie.  Nobody has said anything.

  • The person at the center of the issue isn't speaking.  There is nothing to go on.
  • The other party/parties involved haven't come forward. [The "clean up" man, has most likely already made a visit] There is nothing to go on.
  • There was no police report.  Anyone on the scene as a City employee, is mostly like not authorized to speak on behalf of the Police or EMS.  There is nothing to go on.
  • The DCA ambassador, most likely cannot speak, because he/she is not authorized to speak to the media or on behalf of the DCA.
  • The owner of the venue where this took place in/near has not come forward. [The "clean up" man, has most likely already made a visit]
  • The Rangers organization has gone silent.  Nothing is coming out of that camp.

Due to the limited number of people involved, speaking under anonymity, it wont be hard to figure who spoke.

So what can any reporter do to get the "real story" and not speculation?

The guy lied.  He has no credibility.  PERIOD.

It's not a big issue.

^And as you hoped, local media (Scene) did dig in and helped break/disseminate the competing story of what happened.

What is that going to do?

They guy will still be a liar.

There is no story.  He's not a top MLB Star. No one cares.

The ideal outcome would be for a correction to be issued by the media outlets, such as yahoo, that ran with a false story.  That's not unprecedented.

And unfortunately corrections are buried on page 37 of a news paper, or in ultra-fine print of a web-based "news" source.  So the story remains.  Nationally people still think the Cuyahoga burns and the Flats are hopping.  Life goes on.

And meanwhile, every night around the country a similar incident happens with a pro athlete.  Wives, girlfriends, baby mamas (or all the above) cause altercations between alpha males out of town and ingesting alcohol.  It happens more than you think.

I think this is UO putting this under way to powerful of a microscope.  As someone in a related business, I have to go with MTS on this one.

We don't often agree, but thank you.

How completely embarrassing for our city.

So, these guys: http://www.cleveland.com/lakewood/index.ssf/2013/08/army_veterans_hike_90_miles_to.html#incart_river_default#incart_m-rpt-2

hiked 90 miles since Tuesday to raise awareness about military suicide rates, which are very high.

I went to their FB page to see how they are doing - their feet are very messed up of course, but they made it to the city last night and were going to Soldiers & Sailors' this morning.

How terrible for our city that these two veterans were harrassed when they finally got to cleveland. They were on W 28th and Detroit and a group of African-Americans started yelling at them and harrassing them and talking smack about the flag and saying they were going to kick their asses if they ever walked through their neighborhood again. They then reported "we just got jumped," but I'm not sure of the details.

On the good side, the Marriott donated them their room for the night and someone else has stepped up to drive them home, but this kind of thing is very disappointing for me to read.
