I remember going to the Bingham in 2005-09. Holy god were there some bad dudes living alongside people paying market rate.

Overall, Warehouse District apartments are quiet and lack fights, domestic incidents, or any drama of that sort, which makes this more surprising. I actually think there's more privacy in some respects living in an apartment building vs a standalone house, which could result in a discrete environment for drug dealers. The most obnoxious thing my neighbors have ever done in 9 months is cheer during Green Bay Packers games haha.

I agree. I'm in The Critt and have never had any issues in my four years there. Yeah, occasionally the hallway will smell like weed, but knock on wood, I've never had any issues and everyone has been relatively quiet and very friendly. This is definitely shocking and unfortunate. But it doesn't appear to be a random act.

CARJACKING/PEDESTRIAN STRUCK:

Today at approximately 11:15am, a female was parking her car at Dave’s Supermarket at 2700 Carrol Avenue when she was approached by a black male, late teens or early 20s, who put a gun to her head and took her vehicle. Citizens attempted to intervene and one was struck by the vehicle as the suspect drove off. This citizen refused medical treatment and after giving his statement left the scene on foot. The vehicle is a 2003 silver Honda with the Ohio license plate of FZS 5354. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Second District Detectives at 216-623-5218. Anyone who spots the car is asked to call 911

When I was a reporter, I always ragged on cops when they told me that "it was a drug deal gone wrong." You mean there was a good part about it??

From a friend's FB page who lives in Gordon Square area - does anyone have details or verification?:

There was an incident in the Gordon Square Arcade parking lot . At 10:00p a couple of nights ago, someone was robbed at gunpoint, and the suspect fled south on W. 67th. The entire situation is being addressed by authorities.

Rather odd how the two suspects were able to get inside the Langston... I use CSU's rec center at night, and I'm disappointed to see few if any campus police officers on foot considering how small the campus is. I mostly see them circling the area in patrol cars.

My undergrad campus bordered a somewhat sketchy neighborhood, and I would always see campus police on foot or bicycle throughout the year.

^ A scary situation, for sure. But it was an isolated incident involving drugs, similar to the shooting at the Archer

From people I know who live in the Langston. I should have put a caveat that it hasn't been confirmed by law enforcement though.

One rarely sees Cleveland-area police outside of their cars.  I think if that changed, a lot of things would get better around here.

Does the building not have security cameras at entrances or hallways?  Can't believe they don't have a description of individuals or a car plate or something...

"The city of Cleveland is asking police departments across Ohio to send officers to help during the Republican National Convention in July.

While the Cleveland Police Department has 1,521 sworn officers, as many as 5,000 will be needed to provide security for more than 50,000 visitors, journalists and politicos expected for the convention...."

Robbery of a Case student in broad daylight on a Sunday morning at Murray Hill and Edgehill.  WTF is going on in Little Italy?

http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/oh-cuyahoga/case-western-reserve-university-student-robbed-at-gunpoint-near-campus

That's pretty close to the "border" between the effective CWRU campus and Little Italy.  It's the extension of Cornell Rd up the hill, right by Valentino's.

Yes, I know that.  I went to Case (lived four years in a bottom-of-the-hill south side dorm) and still pick up a Valentino's pizza about twice a month.  I would consider that part of Little Italy to be just as safe as as Murray Hill and Mayfield.

Still the same quality?  I only lived on campus three semesters during the early 80s, but that and CovBev were a much needed break from the horrific meal plan "food" that was a big part of the reason I started commuting.

I would agree, back then it was considered perfectly safe unless of course ...... one could go to 105th McDonald's safely.  The mixed race suites/floors used to have a deal, the black kids got McDonald's the non-black kids got the pizza.

Valentino's is still the same quality as it was in the late 90s when I was at Case.  It's one of the best pizzas in the Cleveland area IMO, and you can't beat the price either.  I would easily pay 50% more for it (I hope they don't read that though! :P ).

I think anyone who says Mamma Santa is the best pizza in Little Italy is either crazy or has never tried Valentino's.  No comparison.

Anyway...crimewise...I spend a fair amount of time down there still and have walked from Murray Hill/Adelbert to Murray Hill/Mayfield countless times and never once gotten the feeling that anywhere along that stretch was anything but perfectly safe.  Seeing the location of this (regardless of time of day, but especially at 9:45 am on a Sunday) was shocking to me.

I don't understand why anyone would target an area heavily filled with college students. Students are notoriously broke, carry little cash, and many only use credit/debit cards which can be easily shut down if stolen.

Just a guess, but maybe to steal a laptop and/or cell phone something?

It may not even have been "targeted", but just a "crime of opportunity" where there was no one around except a kid with some sort of valuables on him and the robbers made a spur of the moment decision to pull the car over?

I would agree with you except this is not the first such incidence. I wonder if there are groups trolling looking for that opportunity, and if so, my original question still stands. I mean, how much can you get for a stolen cell phone. Not that much. A laptop, maybe.

Unlocked cell phones are worth almost as much as laptops now.

What other incidents have you heard about?  I occassionally check CWRU alerts and haven't noticed anything in Little Italy this school year other than the well known string of robberies in December and a robbery in September in the parking lot by Sidari's.

"well known string of robberies in December" sounds right to me. It's not like that was that long ago.

"well known string of robberies in December" sounds right to me. It's not like that was that long ago.

Yes, but they were all on the same day by the same people (who were all subsequently caught).  And they all occurred north of Mayfield Rd. at night and seemed to target the church parking lot (considerably further from campus).  I wouldn't say that seemed to be targeted to students or similar at all in pattern to this occurrence.

I thought maybe you had heard about some other incidents like this one closer to campus.

How about the priest that was attacked/held up recently? I'm going off memory of course, but all these crimes make a general impression when thought about in terms of "crime in the area" in someone's mind (like mine). Even if the original robbers were caught, stuff like this seems to indicate to me some sort of increase in targeting people in that area, and I guess I don't understand why. Priests? College students? Why not just wait outside goodwill to rob people?

How about the priest that was attacked/held up recently?

That was the "string of robberies" I was talking about.  The priest was the first victim of four robberies by the same people on the same night.  Other than that one night, there has only been one other robbery in all of Little Italy in at least 8 months until this one...at least according to the CWRU Safety Alerts.  Most problems on or near campus occur north of Euclid Avenue.

What is surprising to me isn't the volume of robberies in Little Italy (it's probably still far lower than any other place in Cleveland)...but the location and time of this one especially.  This wasn't one of the streets connecting to Euclid Avenue in East Cleveland, or the back parking lot of the church at night.  Not only was this broad daylight, but this is a well trafficked corner with Rising Star, a couple restaurants, and a store flanking the intersection.

I don't understand why anyone would target an area heavily filled with college students. Students are notoriously broke, carry little cash, and many only use credit/debit cards which can be easily shut down if stolen.

True, but this is CWRU.  There may be a perception that these are "rich kids".

There were issues with crime even when I went there last century.  Though then it was mostly northside.

Yeah, Sunday morning broad daylight is pretty disturbing.

Why? It's easy pickings from East Cleveland and the neighborhoods surrounding it to the west.

No, but you can get up into the Heights pretty quick and it has its own issues lately.

Murray Hill Road has historically been quite safe for non-black people for quite politically incorrect reasons.  Now there's a decent amount of money there and less "security".

There was a little beverage store by that corner, I disremember if it was in the Baccio's or Lounge Leo building.  We called it "Papa Joe's".  They did a huge business with the fraternities and the rest of the southside dorms, and there were usually younger neighborhood guys hanging out nearby.

I would agree with you except this is not the first such incidence. I wonder if there are groups trolling looking for that opportunity, and if so, my original question still stands. I mean, how much can you get for a stolen cell phone. Not that much. A laptop, maybe.

These guys are obviously not rocket scientists.  Do priests today carry tons of electronics around with them?  I guess they might....

Even the number of incidents with teenagers carrying BB guns is quite high.

On a related note, I went to Dick's while my parents were in town visiting for the weekend. The BB guns sold in the cases are pretty cheap and very realistic - anyone isn't going to be fooled upon first glance, especially once the perp takes off the orange cap. There was even a "semi automatic" BB gun - why do these even exist? When I was a kid, the only BB guns around were 9 mil. replicas and pump action and they were pretty fake in appearances.

You don't even need to get one under the case. They had some on racks that can be bought by anybody.

My friend who is a bounty hunter goes to East Cleveland all the time to round up people. They don't usually f**k with him since he's got a team going in, but he has mentioned on a few instances of perps pulling BB guns out trying to scare off 9 guys with concealed weapons and knives!

Murray Hill Road has historically been quite safe for non-black people for quite politically incorrect reasons.

I suspect that might have pissed some people off over the years, maybe even informed their current attitudes toward "polite society."

Can somebody tell me where to find a map (or a description)

of the jurisdictions/coverage areas of the various university circle police departments?  IE case/UH/Clinic?

If you ever hang out with a bunch of Cleveland cops, you'll realized they weren't all hired for their skill or professionalism.  A lot of them know someone.

And then there's this one.  He had been on the job since October.  Nice to know Cleveland has a diverse police force.

Cleveland police officer's car, gun stolen from Interbelt Nite Club in Akron

AKRON, Ohio — Someone stole a Cleveland police officer's personal car and service gun from the parking lot of the Interbelt Nite Club, police reports say.

Officer Howard Hart III, 27, told Akron police he first noticed his car keys were missing about 2:30 a.m. Monday while walking from the dance floor to the bar, according to police reports.

Akron police noted Hart's speech was slurred. No arrests have been made in the case.

Completely and utterly amazing. This is one of those magic articles that conjures up every human emotion imaginable for the reader....it's funny, it's terrifying but it's mostly sad.

This sentence is my favorite:

In a blistering dissent, Judge Timothy McCormack blasted the arbitrator's decision as "a stagnant pool of rancid, stenchful waste."

#JudicialEndorsementsMatter.

a student was also mugged around noon this past Monday at the corner of Overlook and N. Park by four guys who got out of an SVU.

Before that (last week sometime?) a similar thing happened to another student around E123 & Euclid which is right by the UCPD.

Ugh.  You all are completely wrong on this one.  Both the common pleas court's and the court of appeals' decisions were correct and the rationale of McCormack's dissent is contrary to law.  If one of the other appellate judges had joined with him, the Ohio Supreme Court would have almost certainly reversed that ruling.

The DECISION to return this cop to work was rendered by the arbitrator in a FINAL and BINDING arbitration.  Arbitration is a form of alternative dispute resolution, which is highly encouraged in our legal system.  It is not intended to be an exhibition game.  You don't get to "appeal" an arbitration decision.  What you can do is file an application to vacate the decision.  To grant such an application, which is exceedingly rare, the judges can't simply determine that they would've reached a different result.  The arbitrator could even misapply the law and, in Ohio, the courts can't vacate the decision.  Only when the arbitrator is found to have clearly exceeded his authority under the contract can the courts vacate the decision.

So knock the arbitrator and his decision all you want.  But don't pretend that these judges were allowed to conduct a de novo review of the decision and supplant it with one of their own.  If that were the case, people would never agree to arbitrate disputes and the court dockets would be even more crowded than they are now.

^ I want to say better care needs to be taken in choosing arbitratiors, but they have to be agreed on by both parties, correct?
