Been hearing that this could be built in the suburbs, not downtown, possibly in the I-77/Rockside area. It would be a shame for downtown to lose both the CPD HQ and the northern Ohio FBI HQ....

A lot of people on UO over the years have commented on how the FBI building is like a fortress and doesn't add much to the street presence of the neighborhood.  I'm wondering if the FBI left that building, perhaps something more inviting could be built in its place.  That might offset the fact of them leaving for another spot.

I find it hard to believe that the FBI would leave a facility built less than two decades ago.

There is plenty of space along Opportunity Corridor.  ?

So I've been to Cleveland's field office a couple of times. $80 million seems low to me, given the resources contained within the building.

That number could be just brick and mortar.

Please god no.

  • ColDayMan changed the title to Cleveland Metro: New FBI HQ

I wonder if this could be an expansion.  I walk by that building every morning, its practically brand new and appears to be in great shape.  It would be a colossal waste to abandon it.

The city of Cleveland thinks it can build a police HQ for nearly 1,000 employees for $60 million. I don't think that's reasonable, but let's go with it as "in the ballpark."

In 2002, right around the time the Cleveland FBI office was built, it had 166 agents and 125 support personnel (per https://www.cleveland19.com/story/876661/los-angeles-agent-to-lead-cleveland-fbi-office/). It has probably grown some since then, but I can't find any info as to how much. For some reason, I seem to recall that Cleveland's FBI currently has 200 agents. If that's the case, then the support staff would have grown by a like amount, putting it at about 150. If that's correct, 350 employees for Cleveland FBI ($80 million building) and nearly 1,000 for CPD ($60 million +/- building) seems like a generous expenditure given the employment involved. And I suspect that some of the equipment, furniture, etc. from the current FBI building will be moved to the new FBI building.

I agree. Sounds like a "use it or lose it" scenario. That building is in exceptional condition. Why couldn't they simply expand and/or update the existing facility?

The FBI is looking at relocating to a facility that more specifically meets their needs and could include other agencies as noted in the article posted above about the Hinckley Parkway site. But I've heard from a couple of people that they are looking at the I-77/Rockside area.

...so more movement from the CBD to the Independence area. They may also want to be more centrally located within the Cleveland-Akron MSA.

Any possibility that they are confusing Rockside with Hinckley Parkway?  Hinckley Parkway is actually pretty close to Rockside/I-77.  Closer than it is to Downtown.

Thats the Northeast Ohio Regional Strike Force HQ.  Also known as the Northeast Ohio Regional Fusion Center.

It's made up of all types of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies that are working together on different types of crimes in this region.

As they state in their website:

The NEORFC is one of eighty fusion centers designated and recognized by the Department of Homeland Security. The mission of the Northeast Ohio Regional Fusion Center is to facilitate and enhance the level of inter-agency communications, criminal and intelligence analysis, and information sharing among Federal, State and local stakeholders, and the public and private sectors in order to anticipate and counter criminal activity, terrorism, and other hazards in coordination with the Ohio Fusion Center Network and the Intelligence Community.

Of course it's always possible that they will locate a new FBI Field Office next to the STRIKE FORCE HQ IF there's enough land available.

Interesting.  It surprises me that the federal government leased.

Apparently W made a big push to “privatize” as many things as he could and the GSA owning buildings was one of them.

It does sound like this developer is getting WAAAAY more than they should be. But I don’t understand why they don’t try and buy out the building...it would have to be cheaper and I’m sure they owner doesn’t want to try and repurpose this thing now.

Haven't heard anything on this lately.  Any updates?

I think I'm going to wander to Noble Beast after work today, I'll start walking up and asking folks pulling out of their current HQ. What could go wrong?

I just thought I'd give this a bump since it's been almost 2 years since the last post.  I assume nothing has happened since then.
