The Pittsburgh story from the link above forgot to mention that the "Bodies exhibit" was already in Cleveland.

I always heard that The CMA had the second largest endowment in the U.S.

The linked article above, stating $600 million was from 2003 after the endowment lost a lot of its value, but now it is supposed to be back up to the mid or upper $800 million range.  I believe was traditionally close to 1 billion.

I don't know about the CMA having the second largest endowment.  While it large, and without doing any research on the point, I would imagine the Met and Getty have larger endowments.  And that is just off the top of my head.

The Getty is struggling, we did some events at the getty museum and getty villa and they lost some "clout".

That item is from 2003, I recall reading about the endowment in late 2005 and it being up there.

I could have sworn Cleveland was number 2 in the world.  I do recall that various museums around the world we're pissed at CMA's arrogance, when the museum decided to do the addition and didn't want to loan parts of the collections out to other musems.  I happened to be in San Fran and they had requested to borrow some art and were denied. and seemed to be upset that they were "snubbed" by what people deem as the best museum in the country.  Of course I loved every minute of it!

Ok, here is something from last year:

"From a high of $758 million at the end of 1999, the endowment fell about 25 percent in value to $565.5 million in 2002. Rankin helped rebalance the portfolio and restructure its management. In the past four years, the endowment rebounded by growing to $770 million - despite annual withdrawals of $30 million to $35 million to buy art and keep the museum running."

i'm still searching for that PD article that listed all the museum endowments.

Here is a website I found which lists the top ten endowments (it excludes the Getty...not clear why expect it might being suggesting that it is so far out of all the other museums league  money wise that if was not fair to compare).  It is as of June 2006.  I find it very suspect as it can not give a figure for its number 1 (the Met although I have no doubt the Met is number 1) and it has Cleveland's endowment way too low (see above post which I believe gives correct figures for Cleveland).  That said all the other estimates may also be low so it is the ranking that is most interesting.  Anyway, who knows if this is accurate but for what it is worth:

1.  Met (uncertain)

2.  MFA-Houston (760 mil.)

3.  National Gallery (600 mil.)

4.  Art Inst. of Chicago (565 mil.)

5.  MoMa (495 mil.)

6.  Harvard Univ. Art Museum (470 mil.)

7.  MFA Boston (440 mil.)

8.  Cleveland (385 mil.)

9.  Indianapolis Museum of Art (345 mil.)

10. Winterthur Mus. and Country Estate (330 mil.)

Again I question the numbers but perhaps not the ranking.  I am sure there is a more definitive list out there.

the site is:  artsjournal.com/man/archives200660901.shtml

That's strange that they have such a low figure for CMA. Do a google search and you'll see multiple places that cite CMA as having $700m +.

I looked at their June 30,2006 Financial Statement on their website.  It didn't list an "endowment" but put its total of investments and charitable perpetual trust funds at $723 million.  I am guessing that might be one way of defining an endowment.  Maybe there are others.

Hi! My name is Michael. I am new user to this site.  I love it!

Can anyone tell me what is going on with Ashbury Towers?

I'm not particularly fond of these ranking games...they don't really impress anyone and sound a little desparate IMHO...but for what it's worth, a NYTimes article on line today about poor Buffalo's Albright Knox museum cites MoMa's endowment at $650MM which is less the CMA, so this list, by amount and ranking, is clearly garbage.

The Met's 2006 financials show investment assets of almost $2.4B- yowza!  Which makes it all the more appalling that the generous taxpayers of NYC heavily subsidize the Met's operations ($24MM last year).  As if there wasn't enough private money in NYC, gimme an f'ing break.  Needless to say, I don't make the suggested fully entry "donation" when I go to the Met.

Anyhoo, back to Cleveland.

Personally I'm just ecstatic to know the CMA is in such a comfortable financial position.

I agree, it's a damn shame what's happening with Albright Knox. Last I heard they were facing a revolt for even thinking about selling off some second and third tier pieces just to make ends meet. It's a fantastic museum IMO.

tell that to all the preservation staff that they laid off back in 2004. (re: CMA)

really? geez. was it because of extended construction (not needing such a high level of service) or budgetary constraints?

budgetary constraints. This was right before the expansion.

They laid off the very people critical to keeping their prized works in tip-top shape.

Yeah, those lay-offs kinda stunk.  For better or for worse, most of the endowment funds are restricted (e.g., for acquisition) so things in the operating budget can still get kind of tight it would appear.  Unlike some of the other cultural orgs in the city, I think the CMA board is pretty conservative about preventing deficits, which is a good thing.  All in all, we're pretty lucky that the museum really does have extraordinary resources allowing it to compete with the big guys for choice acquisitions.  And unlike NYC museums, it doesn't answer to the city or the mayor's social views, for its operating $.

actually I prefer to think that CMA is one of the big five and that others are competing with us! :-D

While not directly beneficial to Cleveland per se, it is interesting to note that The Cleveland Clinic is now expanding as far out as to the richest city in the world:

"How many places can you say, 'I want world-class hospitals, universities, and museums,' and boom, the Sorbonne, Cleveland Clinic, Guggenheim, and Louvre are on the way?"

^that is kinda cool

I'll bet the denizens of urbanabudhabi.com will be nonplussed by the suburban bunkers that the clinic builds there.  or not.

Cleveland needs to come up with a project to get rid of all those seagulls that fly over the freeway by the sewer plant. What a great way to enter the city, car gets craped on and then you pass a run down abandon ho jo hotel. Beautiful!

Deech the HoJo will be fixed up....but I take it you haven't read enough items in the forum to know that.

I am new hear. what was the title for the thread talking about that? Talk about great views of both the city and the lake!

Never mind, I found it. thanks.

why doesnt the warehouse district have its own hotel. i think one would be very successful there. i havnt heard about one being included in pesht. i do remember one being planned at the end of west 6th street 4-5 years ago but financing fell through. i loved the rendition. every outta towner has a good walk or take a taxi to get there from their hotel, why not jus put one there and capitalize on all the partygoers, bachelor-bachelorette  parties that go on down there. to me its a no brainer.

Ok I found out what is happening at the galleria. 40,000 square feet is going for dollar bank offices. They get the space on APril 1,and remodeling start after that. Now this is all a secret, only few know right now :yap:

I'll be interested to hear more about Dollar Bank going to the Galleria.

As for a hotel in the Warehouse District, how much closer does the Rennaisance have to be? Or the Ritz? Or the Marriott? The Doubletree once planned for Lakeside between West 3rd and 6th wouldn't have been much closer. Only the littany of parking lots makes these an unpleasant stroll. It's not the distance. It's the scenery.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

not everyone can afford the ritz or the rennaisance  and well the marriott...thats a cold walk along the lakefront during winter months....something in that neighborhood would be ideal and convenient

financial reasons is one thing.

since when is the marriot on the lakefront??  sorry, but that is just making an excuse.

I too believe there should be a branded hotel in the FEB or Pesht projects, but not for last reason you list.

well i dont believe outta towners can be thrilled with that jaunt...being clevelanders it might not seem so bad

Id like to see a JW or W or something to that effect here, especially if he wants this area to be a super destination. Maybe a more affordable place in the eastbank spot. If a new tower ever gets built on that public Square parking lot why not builg it mixed used=part hotel part office?

If Grand Rapids can get a JW.......

I would love to see the construction of a stand alone hotel or one incorporated into any of the future projects coming online.

I personally prefer starwood properties over the marriott properties, besides Cleveland has several Marriott properties in downtown proper and no starwood properties at all.

I know of one company currently looking to expand it's operations from NYC into Cleveland. They are kind of a tech business but also in the medical field, so the Clinic is a draw. I'd love to see them downtown or over in UC, and I know some of their board members see it that way as well. The issue is that some of their other board members want to go closer to their own home (exurbs outside the Cuyahoga region.. where else?).

I'll keep the board informed as this progresses. We're talking about 100 to 200 new jobs in the area with pretty amazing growth potential after that. Having it in Cleveland would be a huge boon for the city as well as the inner-ring suburbs.

Interesting....  Thanks for the info willow.  Keep us posted

By the looks of the windows, it appears that the Terminal Tower was the victim of a subprime loan. :(

Yeah, I know.. kind of lame of me!

Here's the deal. On the first one, I'm involved in the negotiations on the developers side. It's smaller than many of the deals being talked about here, but I think the location is important for the expansion of Ohio City and the Detroit Shoreway outside of their current focus. If everything works out, it will be close to the already mentioned David Ellison project.

Details asap.

On the other front, the company talking about relocating from NY has some pretty real issues to work out beyond some of the board members wanting to be close to their mcMansions. They are also getting some pretty good deals from a rival region as far as tax incentives go. Because I'm only a consultant on this one, I don't want to name regions, players etc..

OK, so that's two projects I can't give concrete details to, and I've only got like 4 posts to my name! I suck!

Seriously, here's another company "x" one, there's a new bar going up on East 4th that should fill a nice little niche' between the fine dining of Lola's, the show's at HoB, the entertainment at P & F and the whatever it is people like at the bowling ally (no offense, but that's about as soul-less a place as I've seen outiside of TGIF). Anyway, the place will have a more jazz-oriented slant, but not like that $7 a seat kind we've been seeing out of the Bop Stop, more like Club Isobella's only more bar oriented than dining.

Well, my2cents, if you hate me even more now I wouldn't hold it against you.. but that's what little inside dirt I can muster without burying myself.

Yeah, I'm talking about the Wonder Bar. I hadn't seen the thread talking it up, so I didn't want to spill any beans not already on the floor.

I'm friends with the owners, who are this really exciting couple from Boston by way of Miami. My brother helped convince them to come up and start a place here after they had been living in South Beach. Everyone drops their jaws when they hear that.. "You came HERE from Miami??"

Well, "Yeah, this place is great."

Clevelanders can be their own worst enemy when it comes to selling this town. You've got things already happening, you've got the infrastructure in place to support more, and you've got the opportunity to be part of it.

Yeah, this place is great.

Thanks for the info, weepinwillow. All really interesting. It's a damn shame about the board issues. Hopefully they'll realize that their stockholders interests would be better served by locating closer to the clinic and other industry players.

BTW, what is going on with Bop Stop? I thought it was supposed to close, but then heard it was staying open, then heard they were closing "for a few months"...??

Yeah, I'm not going to sugar coat it, they want the best deal possible and have a pretty nice package in front of them in a different county. That said, I was in on a meeting with one of the board members and the city of Cleveland, and it was positive on both sides.

I hope they do come to Cleveland, I think their growth potential is astronomical.

* I don't know what's going on with the Bop Stop. Maybe someone else has on here can speak to that?

Matt,

I’m trying to move back to Cleveland in your Ward. I now live in Fort Myers and miss Cleveland desperately. I’m committed to urban living. I tried to purchase a home at Ashbury and had to cancel the deal because they could not deliver by the proposed closing date. This is because of the fire. Now Americon Homes does not want to return my 2K deposit even though they promised me a check by last June. I have tried calling daily, e-mails, the Ohio Attorney Generals Office, letters to the Plain Dealer, but nothing has worked. Jeff Simler, VP of sales is never available for me to talk to. I keep getting the run around. As a former constituent and hopefully a future one I’m asking a favor. Can you use your political clout to help me get my money back? I think a call from you might give me some results. I have been working with Progressive Urban Real Estate and they have told me that many of their clients are facing the same issue. I think your community should be aware of the outright theft that is happening with Americon Homes regardless of wether or not you can help me. Jeff Simler’s number is 440-247-9920. I hope you can help. I’m looking forward to coming home to my town.

Anyone with claims against AmeriCON Homes should contact the FBI and file a criminal complaint for rackering, criminal conspiracy, fraud, etc. There are several complaints about Jeff SIMLER and Sandy KRULAK collecting deposits for homes and not building them or returning deposit money. They are scammers! If you think that is bad, check out (just one county) the Cuyahoga County Recorders site and type in Valley Ranch Estates and/or Americon Homes, there you will find thousands owed to contractors that weren’t paid. Unfortunately, I am one of them. www.CRVDRYWALL.com

I always wondered where the name Ameri-CON came from, and I guess now I know. In my databases, I have Sandy Krulak ([email protected])and Paul Ettorre ([email protected]) listed as contacts there. The website (http://www.ameri-conhomes.com/contactus/) makes it seem as thought they are in business as a growing, healthy concern with lots of projects available all over the region. Is this something that has been in the newspapers yet?

Comment by TimFerris — February 1, 2007 @ 6:00 am

Newspapers? I’ve contacted wkyc tv-3 216-344-3333, wjw fox-8 216-431-8888, and cbs 19 216-771-1943. And, I think anyone that was victimized by Sandy KRULAK, Jeff SIMMLER, or ameri-CON homes should call the local news. Moreover, the FBI telephone number for Cleveland is 216-522-1400.

Bush goes ballistic about other countries being evil and dangerous, because they have weapons of mass destruction. But, he insists on building up even a more deadly supply of nuclear arms right here in the US. What do you think? What is he doing to us, and what is he doing to the world?

If ever there was ever a time in our nation’s history that called for a change, this is it!

We have lost friends and influenced no one. No wonder most of the world thinks we suck. Thanks to what george bush has done to our country during the past three years, we do!
