Hate to say it because it's the family George but l'm interested to see how his Flat's project turns out. It looks very promising on paper. That, plus the Rose building and saving the Rhodes tower all make this version of the tax credits very positive for the region.

I can't see any downside to increasing the  credits as well as the tax credit for the film industry. The credits promote growth/projects and are often the difference between something and nothing. As far as l'm concerned the more the merrier.

wish they'd have been able to stay at the wolstein, but I'm interested in seeing basketball at the public auditorium!

I can't read the article, but it's nice to see more activity at Public Hall.  Of course this means less activity at Wolstein Center.

I thought Public Hall was renovated a few years ago.  What else did they need to do?

I think there were just making the needed adjustments to support basketball

The Charge, who played the last three seasons at the Wolstein Center, made $3 million in improvements to Public Hall as part of the six-year agreement they signed with the city in June.

They have added the technology and the modern elements of a basketball game that people have come to expect when they come to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, and even the Charge games the last couple years. We’re bringing that into a building that’s meant to house special events. It’s just a fun feeling."

I'm very interested in attending.   I'm wondering if they made upgrades to concessions as well.   Admittedly it's been years, but the last big event I attended there was a Rock Hall Induction, and the concession stands were embarrassing.   It was like hot dogs in a crock pot and bags of candy that it looked like the city employees picked up at 7 Eleven on their way to the show.   I felt like I was at a high school PTA event 😜

Apparently, elements not available at Wolstein. Maybe they could have been added at Wolstein or is it not worth upgrading a venue with an uncertain future?

Tbh, I never had any interest in seeing a game at Wolstein. It’s just much too large for G-League. Public Hall? Absolutely. Has that cozy, intimate college basketball arena feel to it. Going tomorrow to see how the renovations play. I’m excited.

FYI. A lot of the sections in the lower level have food and drinks included in the ticket price. Including alcohol in some sections. And they’re affordable tix.

How many fans were in attendance?

I wonder what this means for Wolstein Center? CSU basketball games are only drawing ~1,500. Maybe they can move back to Woodling Gym and Wolstein can be demoed for something else.

there's been discussion on this in the cleveland state thread.  think the charge moved because they have greater flexibility with scheduling at the auditorium.

wolstein loses the school like a million dollars a year or something like that.  I don't mind the woodling, but many sports programs use that space already, might get tight if both basketball teams need to use it for games and practices - on top of the other sports.

I think CSU should try to partner with someone like bedrock, have them build a modest arena and let bedrock make the money on mid-sized events (bands, comedians, wrestling). Csu could then demo the wolstein and try to sell the land

Maybe CSU could split between Woodling and Public Hall.

KJP had several stories on this in the last couple of years.  The info may be obsolete due to CSU's finances, but here they are:

https://neo-trans.blog/2022/11/17/csu-releases-campus-master-plan/

"The Wolstein Center arena is proposed to be demolished and replaced with a collection of buildings described as the Partnership District but with few details as to what users would occupy them."

https://neo-trans.blog/2023/07/25/new-csu-arena-in-play-by-years-end/

"CSU’s potential [new, smaller arena] development site totals 10 acres of land along the south side of Payne, from East 22nd Street to Interstate 90. The arena will be on Payne and overlook the highway, potentially with a multi-level parking garage immediately south of it on a 5-acre block."

I’m pretty sure all of that is no more due to CSU’s financial condition.

Hard to say, maybe a thousand+? I'm guessing capacity is 5k because they said free ts to first 5k fans. Definitely some kinks to work out w concessions but can't beat it for $7 lol.

Also worth noting, they're using the cavs city floor from last? year. The embellishments in the 3 point line really add to the mystique.

The Official attendance per NBA G league website was 3,584 which fits right in with their average. However, the Charge probably expected more as they hjad

a first 5000 fans got a towel or something giveaway.

On the other hand they were on Local TV and they were competing with the CAVS who were playing at RMFH for the basketball fan's attendance.

So not a bad crowd.

They are playing again tonite against the same team and will be competing with the Monsters at RMFH and the CSU men's basketball team at the Wolstein Center

and they have another giveaway promotion.

I also went, the venue is perfect and the reuse of the playhouse inspired floor is a perfect match as it feels more theatrical than rocket mortgage. I would say there’s not really a bad seat, really a great match for the charge and a resuse of the public auditorium.

I will say I expected more people as others said but the Cavs getting an unpredicted home game certainly explains that. With bronny James now traveling with the lakers GLeauge team we may be testing out the capacity at the end of the month.

Yeah guys. It’s totally worth the price of admission. Paid $53. Sat basically behind Caris Levert and Sam Merrill. George Niang showed up at halftime. They had an AUCE taco and salad bar. And a few other items as well as dessert.

As far as included alcohol. It’s a couple White Claw flavors, a couple Graham + Fisk wine in a can items, and a few others beer options. There’s a full cash bar otherwise.

Conclusion; It was a great experience. The venue is gorgeous, the quality of basketball is really good, the service was top notch. 10/10 recommend.

Don't they normally avoid scheduling a game which conflicts with a Cavs home game?

Thanks to the NBA Cup there were 2 unscheduled games for every team from 12/10-16, so the G League teams had no way of knowing which days/times to avoid

Good to hear they may be reusing a floor from last year. I've been told that the Cavs have or used to have a warehouse on Perkins where they'd store the flooring and other stuff. If you got lucky, you could dumpster dive on trash day and get quality maple flooring. I was never so lucky to confirm though.

Cleveland Fire should probably check:

A.  The owner's house.

B.   One of the owner's other car lots, where he has a beautiful, well-maintained 2013 silver Suburban available for $100 down!   Buy here pay here!

The investigators knocked on my door looking for camera footage from that night. I was out at the bars the night before and I didn’t know fire investigators had badges… I was like what did I get into last night. Hopefully they catch whoever did this… love that one of the photos is literally of car parked on the lot at one point as if the owners don’t know who either owns the car or bought it.

The Cleveland tour guide was awful and did the city no justice.  I was most impressed by the browns fan on the street in Ohio City.  There was so much more to share, and the tour guide did not even mention all the development on the west side, let alone all the growth on the east side.  How did they find that tour guide?

@newyorker what city is that on the video thumbnail?  I don't recognize that skyline.

It is - AI has improved a bit as far as rendering hands but is still laughably bad when it comes to rendering skylines with any accuracy. For example, here's what Adobe Firefly (their AI platform) within Photoshop produced with a prompt of "A photo realistic image of downtown Cleveland that accurately shows landmark buildings in the skyline."

Maybe other platforms are more accurate but that would be a topic for another thread.

The Downtown Buffalo grocery store is closing after only three years of operation. I hope Heinens is doing better.  Closing the second floor seems like a flag to be watched closely.

If any consolation, downtown Buffalo has a fraction of the residents of downtown Cleveland.

However in today's consumer trends, you can order groceries from anywhere.  Doesn't have to be Heinens just cause it's close.  Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Heinens is also just far enough away from most Downtown residents to make walking there and back inconvenient. Constantino's does great in the Warehouse District because they have probably 3X more people within a 5 minute walk, and didn't have the massive space to fill.

A Downtown streetcar from Santa could bring the Heinens short walk customer base from 1k to 23k....

While we (Admins and Mods) try to provide some wiggle room in the threads, please try to provide some context. Yes, we all want to see the downtown Heinens be successful, and yes the recent announcement of the second floor closure is concerning, however:

  • As mentioned above, the residential population of Buffalo is much smaller than downtown Cleveland's. From what I could gather, Buffalo is around 3,000 tops - Cleveland is almost seven times that.

  • Braymillers Market in Buffalo has been around for about 70 years with (now) one location, located about 15 miles from the city center. Heinens has an almost 100 year history with almost 20 locations in northeast Ohio (plus a few in Illinois).

  • Braymillers Market opened at quite possibly the worst time and barely had a chance to get any traction. Plus it sounds like there were other issues at play that aren't apples to apples. Heinens opened their downtown location in 2015 - after almost ten years, it's hardly surprising they're reconfiguring their model. Yes, something to be watched and I'll personally miss the quieter spots upstairs for sitting down for lunch.

  • Everyone is free to discuss ways to get more foot traffic - if that involves Santa providing multi-million dollar investments into infrastructure and transportation, we have threads for that - not this one, though.

Is Constantino's better situated in terms of residential population?

I'd argue everything on Euclid and Prospect from East 4th down to the 9 plus the theater district and 9/12 district apartments constitute a higher percentage of Cleveland's downtown residents. To me it seems Heinen's has the upper hand in terms of location near residents/potential shoppers vs Constantino's, but maybe I'm underestimating Flats East and WHD population.

Heinens' rent may be a lot higher than Constantino's though. Not sure how long Constantino's has been there, but high rents in new(er) developments has been a hindrance to retailers nationwide, given the downturn in bricks and mortar.

Looking at this rendering for Browns stadium, that street grid layout looks like a traffic nightmare, with 3-4 narrow streets that feed one main street to get people out. This reminds me of Crocker Park, there is one road that hundreds of cars are trying to get to with a few one lane, two way streets feeding it. This looks to be the same type of layout, and if it is those cars will be stuck for a while.

Don't worry, Brookpark has it all covered in their plan, specifically:

Part III- We have some nice infrastructure

Part IV-  We'll need some more police or something

Is there a daytime rendering available? The nighttime rendering is the only one I've seen.  It doesn't look like there is enough parking.

This new vantage point rendering makes us wince once again at the missed opportunity to append this land to CLE (237 could either be capped to slightly diverted).  If CLE owned this land it would be so easy to build the new facilities (like CMH) sooner without impacting existing operations at the sad airport (and presumed lower cost over a shorter construction term).  If Jimmy and Dee truly cared about the future of Cleveland instead of their insincere virtue signaling press releases, they would recognize the importance of an new aiprot for Cleveland and Northeast Ohio, and instead sign over their puchase option to the City/County, stop their hostility and resume good faith negotiations for the lakefront or elsewhere in the city.  They could instantly reshape their horrible public image and stop us from thinking they gamed this all out to provoke City/Cle and trigger a move out.
