I saw that too.

I think it might be a house. I remember something vaguely in a Planning Commission meeting about a year ago regarding the construction of at least one house being built there. And I think it might be attributed to local artist Vega... I think. Don't quote me on that.

^I saw that as well. But I heard that Vega had moved out to Kirtland after his wife got spooked by all the shootings in DS last summer. I'm very curious as to what would go there.

It's a shame about Reems Deli.  I used to go there at least twice a week.  They closed sometime during the winter and re-opened under a new name, but a fire closed it again a few weeks later.  Now a friggin' Fifth Third is going there.  :whip:

^ Fiberglass will do much less damage when falling from 45-50 stories.

It would do plenty of damage should it fall on someone, but that argument is specious.  Forest City should hire competent contractors and should maintain the tower to ensure that it doesn't fall apart.  FC is just being cheap.  I just think that our city's signature tower deserves something nicer than fiberglass.

The problem is that replacing the deteriorated terra cotta with more terra cotta would be 1. cost prohibitive, and 2. foolhardy.

 

Most older buildings across the country have undergone similar renovations and either "micro cotta" (a resin-based substance) or fiberglass is used for decorative elements - the end result is that the building's decorative elements read the same, and those elements are much more durable than the original materials. FC is not being cheap here, and Coon Restoration is quite the competent contractor. Terra cotta simply lacks the durability and resistance to the elements that's necessary.

New Digital Resource Sharing Service Lets Libraries Add Free Download Media

CLEVELAND - A new Web 2.0 program that allows public libraries to publish and share for free digital video, audio books, eBooks and music with other libraries was unveiled today. The first of its kind, OverDrive Community Reserve, is a shared collection of locally produced digital content available to thousands of libraries worldwide who are part of the OverDrive network. The new digital resource sharing service will be demonstrated at the OverDrive theatre in Booth #617 at the American Library Association Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. from June 23 - June 26, 2007.

 

Libraries with permission to digital book, audio or video content can upload titles for download lending to their local patrons, and now can also share the materials with library users worldwide. For example, the Rochester (MN) Public Library received a grant to produce a video to orient and educate Somali immigrants to the features and services of a public library. Now the video has been added to Community Reserve and is available for download as part of their local OverDrive catalog, and is also available for free for lending by more than 5,000 libraries around the world.

 

"Adding digital media from OverDrive's Community Reserve to our collection was fast and easy, and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to offer more quality download titles for free," said Cynthia Orr, Collection Development Manager for Cleveland Public Library. Tri-C Unveils New Annual Downtown Summer Music Event

CLEVELAND -- Cuyahoga Community College will host a brand new free summer music event that officials hope will eventually become as popular as the renowned Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland. The Tri-C MusicFest Cleveland, to be held July 27-28 on Malls B and C in downtown Cleveland, was unveiled today at a news conference on Mall C featuring Tri-C President Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, Councilman Joe Cimperman and other dignitaries.

 

The inaugural Tri-C MusicFest will feature an eclectic range of musical offerings – from hip-hop to jazz, rock, blues, soul, gospel, and funk. The line-up includes Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood; Stanley Clarke; Miri Ben-Ari; Stefon Harris; Red Wanting Blue; Freekbass; Dead Cat Bounce; The Parrot Sisters; The Cleveland Blues Guitar Summit; Jazz Meets Hip-Hop; and live gospel music. Free and open to the public, Tri-C MusicFest is designed to appeal to everyone with many activities for children and families, merchant vendors, food provided by East 4th Street restaurants, free giveaways, and more.

 

“After many years of successfully presenting Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland, MusicFest is a natural evolution that allows the College to reach an even greater segment of the community with a broader spectrum of musical offerings,” said Dr. Thornton.

 

“Cleveland offers a rich diversity of cultural activities that is reflective of the people who live here and I consider events such as the Tri-C JazzFest and now MusicFest one of our biggest assets,” said Mayor Frank Jackson.

 

The MusicFest stage will dominate the northern edge of Mall C, while the section of Lakeside Avenue between Malls B & C will be closed to create a unique outdoor musical venue and allow a wide area for seating, vendors and family activities. The music will run from 4pm until 11 pm on Friday, July 27th, and from noon until 10 pm on Saturday, July 28th.

 

“Quality is the unifying characteristic of all the performers,” said Beth Rutkowski, the Festival’s director. “We know that Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood, Stanley Clarke and Red Wanting Blue will draw the biggest audiences. But every one of the acts has been hand-selected for their outstanding musicianship and ability to entertain diverse audiences. Our hope is that this event will eventually become as widely anticipated as JazzFest.”

Voters may decide Bradley land fate

I've checked around in Crain's, The PD, and here on Urbanohio and have yet to see any news on what's going at the corner of Clifton and Lake. This important corner/intersection used to house a gas station which is now vacant and dilapidated. Today however, the property was being dug up and and a number of construction vehicles were at work. This is a very valuable piece of land and you would think that RTA would have something to do with this project, but then again, who knows. And for anyone not familiar with this area, it's where the Shoreway terminates and splits into Lake and Clifton, right in front of Edgewater Park (the park area, not the beach).

Isn't the clothing store moving there? Its the one in the same block as Velocity.

Velocity is on Clifton near W. 104th. The area I am referring to would be something like the W. 91st block.

No, i realize that. There is a clothing store that will be moving from the 104th of Clifton to the corner that you are talking about.

What 3231 is saying is that the clothing store from the Wilsher Building (Velocity) is supposed to be moving there. 

That's interesting! I wouldn't have ever guessed that a clothing store would occupy this corner. I figured another gas station. I'm guessing the site needs cleaned up (gas tanks removed). All for a clothing store????? Regardless, I find this exciting as that corner has been quite depressing to look at lately.
