Give the devil it's due, Forest City is doing a nice job with the Tower.

Cautious in Cleveland

by Dan Rafter

Cleveland

Like commercial brokers, developers and lenders across the country, those doing business in Cleveland are looking for ways to adjust to the nation's harsh economic climate. Midwest Real Estate News late last month spoke with four commercial pros doing business in the Midwest city. They shared their thoughts on those commercial sectors that are still doing well and those that are struggling, the steps Cleveland has to take to bolster its public image and the hopes they have for the future of their city...

Williams: I came here from Denver. I remember before we moved here spending time walking in downtown Cleveland. I saw a lot of potential. That's why we came. I saw what could happen here. If Clevelanders themselves would stop bashing Cleveland, we'd have an opportunity to really promote the city. We could talk about projects like The Flats (a mixed-use industrial, entertainment and residential in Cleveland lining the banks of the Cuyahoga River), and what an incredible project that is turning into. They say there are two people who hate Cleveland: Those who have never been there and those who have never left.

No truer words have been spoken.

Totally agree.

Heres a nice little story about the Terminal Tower restoration project I came across.  Not really anything new.

I didnt want to post the whole thing, so included the link at the bottom.

Is there still a flag on top of the tower?

From MayDay's picture upthread, yeppers.

Its looks like as of Nov. 6, from Maydays picture upthread there is.

just looked up today at lunch - there are actually 3 flags...USA, Browns, and Cavs (i think)

Ha, I figured.  I just did not feel like adding another thread to my main-stays.

no worries, that post had already been posted and discussed in the 668 thread anyway.

Just dont want you post information, thinking its new, if its already in its proper place.  You know...why waste the time if its already discussed.  ;)

Oooooo, that's the tall thing that's still wrapped up across the street :-D

It always boggles my mind how Clevelanders do not appreciate what they have.  They would much rather rip their city than praise it.

They talk about having bad weather, as if other cities, like London, did not.

They talk about empty after 5PM downtown as if other cities, like Seattle and Atlanta, were not.

And so on, so forth...

Ha i had some guy in my class last night talking about how much the weather sucks and he hates the cold, and because it is so cold here that means the entire city of cleveland blows too, and he just had to get away from the city for a few days to cheer him up, so where does he go?! TORONTO!!!! Good luck finding warmer weather up there.

It took me moving to Tempe for 9 months for my freshman year of college in order to realize how great cleveland actually is.

A $5 million grant will go to the city of Cleveland for a 57-acre site in the Flats that would be a key piece of the city’s industrial land bank. The city plans to clean up and redevelop the site, a former Arcelor Mittal Steel Co. coke oven on the east side of the Flats, so the property can be redeveloped into 500,000 to 1 million square feet of manufacturing space.

Anyone know where this is at?  And why wouldn't a company like ArcelorMittal be responsible for its clean-up?

EDIT:  It might be this, which has been in the process of being taken apart for a few months.

Projects in Cleveland, Euclid, Akron, North Canton win grants

Posted by Michelle Jarboe/Plain Dealer Reporter November 13, 2008 13:40PM

State grants announced Thursday could propel large projects in Cleveland and Euclid, despite a credit crisis that has stalled construction across the country.

The Department of Development will award more than $50 million to 12 commercial sites, four of them in the Cleveland-Akron area. The grants mainly came from Ohio's Job Ready Sites program, aimed at building infrastructure such as roads and preparing properties to lure companies and create jobs...

I like the walkway and use a lot in winter and sometimes in summer.

No way, MTS, at least during cold winter games at the Q.  Even temp aside, it's much quicker and more direct, esp when you have to wait for traffic lights/cops during a usual heavy street-level auto rush to the parking lots -- and dotcha just like getting the normal Cleveland winter slush splashed on your pant legs while waiting for the cop/light? nothing like that in the dry, comfy Walkway ... Progressive Field's a bit different; it's farther away and not directly connected by the walkway.  Plus, usually the weather is pleasant for baseball and you don't mind walking along Ontario.  But the Walkway is still more direct from the Rapid.

I'm interested in greening the roof of the walkway.

That's an excellent idea. Keep in mind the Medical Mart/Convention Center possibly going on the TC site. Depending on the design, your proposal would partially, if not completely compromised.

Well so much for the casino coming in and maybe thrive our economy a little bit. I seen that Cinncinnati is currently having a 42 floor scraper being built...(sigh) I just wish it wouldnt take us more than 7-8 years to get anything new. What must we do to attract fortune 500 businesses here? They're the ones looking for new headquarters, we should be called the bank city because when you look at our skyline all you see are banking businesses.

Casinos aren't economic development since they don't create wealth. They simply transfer it while creating few educational demands on young people. What demands for chemists, engineers, scientists etc. are needed for casinos?

Very good for Cincinnati. Can you imagine what they were saying when we were building the Key Tower?

And why should we being trying to steal someone else's Fortune 500 companies? Wouldn't it make much more sense to nurture our own? Standard Oil, TRW, Steris, Parker-Hannifin, Sherwin-Williams and others were all founded and grew up here. Want more of them? Grow them.

Here's a link to a story the PD did about these new solar cells:

Absolutely great to see a Cleveland business pioneering this technology.  This technology could really take off and create a lot of manufacturing jobs in the area.  If we can just get wind turbine manufacturing facilities in the area we'd be all set!

Casinos aren't economic development since they don't create wealth.

Ever been to their customer's homes?

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Ever been to their customer's homes?

If you are saying that only the poor gamble, I completely disagree.

If you are saying that the poor are more adversely impacted by gambling, fair enough.

But regardless of the size of the "customers' homes" (Michael Jordan's are probably pretty big), that has nothing to do with economic impact.

And back to my original point, which is to say that Las Vegas was built completely on gambling.

Gambling doesn't create wealth but it can help focus wealth on public priorities like education and infrastructure in an anti-tax environment.

Any thoughts on Huntington moving?  While I understand it will create another hole at the current Huntington building, could the void be filled by residences?

Can we start two new threads?

[*]Hunting bank building (Cleveland) - Moves news and issues

[*]200 Public Square.

Thoughts?

I'm sure we'll start a Huntington Bldg thread if/when development news starts coming out specifically related to the building.  And I think since 200 PS is already completed and at this point isn't much more than announcements of tennants moving in or out it's probably best kept in the office development news thread in business and economy since it isn't really a construction project.

I only post this because it means that a building on lower Prospect will be empty. It looks like a prime residential conversion.

i think this is actually a fantastic thing.  that school had a pretty rough crowd attending it.

I was on Ontario the other day when the school let it out, it wasn't the greatest crowd.

i've been out there when school is out too... sometimes large groups of the "students" would blatantly walk around trying to intimidate whomever dared to use "their" sidewalk.
