I think it would just be an odd location to invest so much money in... particuarly if it's right in the path of the potential (probable) port relocation. plus other than amazing views, that just seems like such a cruddy and isolated area to live in.

 

Tell that to the folks at Quay 55. But I think the building is going to come down to make way for rail spurs or spin-off port development.

 

I disagree, quay 55 is totally different.  Quay 55 is ON the lake.  The HoJo has views of the lake but is sandwhiched between a highway and a rail line, and surrounded by industrial buildings, save channel 3.

Not sure where to put this, but a friend of mine who works in the East Ohio Building, 1717 East 9th, said the owner has told his office they have to move out in the near future.  The building is emptying out completely.  Occupancy is very low, so not sure if the owner just wants to shut it down completely to save on costs or if re-development plans are in the works.  21 floors and over 250,000 sq feet.  Not very nice on the inside though (at least what I have seen of it).

I had relative at the EOHC. That building is crap on the inside.

 

However, it would make an amazing hotel redevelopment.

I wonder what they mean by new exterior.  A friend of mine works there too.  There can't be more than a couple firms left in it. 

While I was browsing office listings I came across the Ontario Point proposal.  Looks like they have a 60 space surface lot as part of the proposal.  From the square footage listed it appears to be a 7 or 8 story building.  Anyone else have more information on this?

No, not if you're talking about the Marathon, which sits at the top of the hill before you go down Commercial(?).  This is the strip of land where all the newscasters set up shop when reporting "live from the Jake."

"Whoever" owns that property has been trying to "develop" it for years.  In the past has even gone as far as to put up a fancy sign with a rendering.  Was actually approached by the guy informally a couple of years ago to locate my business there. 

Yeah .. I remember that little plot up for development for the past 10 years or so.

NASA Building Renewable Hydrogen Station in Cleveland

The Glenn Research division of NASA has decided to build and install a hydrogen refueling station based on renewable energy in downtown Cleveland. The hydrogen fueling station will use water and wind from Lake Erie to create the hydrogen. Solar power will also be used.

 

The water from Lake Erie will be split into hydrogen and oxygen using a high tech, high-capacity customized electrolyzer. A wind turbine will capture the blustery Lake Erie winds and use this to electrolyze the Lake Erie water.

 

The hydrogen fueling station will be located at the Great Lakes Science Center in downtown Cleveland on the edge of Lake Erie. The science center already uses wind and solar power for itself and will tap into this to power the hydrogen fueling station as well.

 

The hydrogen from the station will be used as a demonstration project to power a fuel cell bus. Another purpose of this project is to create green jobs for the citizens of Ohio, which has been hit hard by the manufacturing downturn over the past couple of years.

 

NASA has a long history of using hydrogen as fuel for propellant in its rockets. But, NASA is also known for powering onboard systems for astronauts using hydrogen fuel cells as well, even using the resulting H2O for drinking water.

 

It’s good to see the high-flying NASA coming back to Earth and getting grounded in their community in regard to hydrogen fuel. This brings the future into the now and states that hydrogen isn’t just for astronauts anymore, it’s for common people driving their everyday cars to and from work and life.

NASA's Glenn Research Center is leading a team of industry and university partners in demonstrating a prototype of a commercial hydrogen fueling station that uses wind and solar power to produce hydrogen from water. This initial installation will produce hydrogen from Lake Erie water to fuel a mass transit bus powered by fuel cells.

 

The demonstration, featuring a unique, high-capacity electrolyzer that separates water into its elemental components of hydrogen and oxygen, is part of an economic development program in the Cleveland area. Local workers will design and build the electrolyzer using commercially available components.

 

The Glenn-led collaboration will customize the electrolyzer for the prototype fueling station, and design the circuitry needed to use renewable energy sources to power the electrolyzer and fueling station.

 

"The project is more than a key technology demonstration," said project team member Valerie Lyons, chief of Glenn's Power and In-Space Propulsion Division. "It will be a great educational tool for the public and will serve as a catalyst to inspire new ideas and initiatives that can generate many new jobs and manufacturing opportunities in Ohio."

 

The hydrogen fueling station will be located in downtown Cleveland at the Great Lakes Science Center on the south shore of Lake Erie, where it can be powered from the science center's existing wind and solar power sources. The fueling station will generate hydrogen from Lake Erie water for use in a Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority bus powered by fuel cells. The transit authority will operate the bus in revenue service.

 

Cleveland State University's Nance College of Business Administration will work alongside the collaborators to develop a business template for the electrolyzer and station. The designs for both will be treated as intellectual property and placed in a trust benefiting Ohio citizens.

 

The build-up of the electrolyzer, a major step toward the reality of the fueling station, is funded by the Ohio Aerospace Institute through a $310,000 grant from The Cleveland Foundation. The initial funding is $110,000, with an additional $200,000 to be provided for milestone progress.

 

The goals of the economic development program include engaging Ohio's supply chain manufacturers and retraining a skilled work force for clean energy jobs. The project will demonstrate the viability of clean energy systems for transportation and stationary power and boost regional economic development.

 

Other collaborators include Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Consultants of Brecksville, Ohio; the Center for Automotive Research and Technology Management at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio; Parker Hannifin of Cleveland; Sierra Lobo of Milan, Ohio; Hamilton Sundstrand of Windsor Locks, Conn.; the University of Toledo; and the Earth Day Coalition of Cleveland.

For whatever it's worth, I was in the 1717 East 9th St building on Friday, and asked the security guard if he knew anything about the future of the building.  He told me a large tenant that occupied the 21st floor (I think) moved out, and it just became too expensive to keep the building open.  I asked the security guard if he has heard the building is going to be renovated.  He said he doesn't think anyone knows the answer to that question right now.

I'm not sure its coming down. Maybe I'm being delusionally optimistic, but the current owners paid $2.5 million for it just a couple years ago, (County Auditor's website) and as recently as November they were planning on trying to fix it up. (I knew there was a thread about this somewhere.)

It looks like maybe I was wrong to be optimistic. There's a crane on the property now, and it looks like the restaurant on the north side of the ground floor is gone. I think our eyesore by the lakeshore will be gone shortly. (I'm referring to the old HoJo on the marginal by E 55th.)

The law firm Cavitch Familo was apparently the last tenant in the building.  I'm told they moved out because the new owner wasn't doing anything to keep the building up and has no plans whatsoever to renovate the building.  The problem with the building attracting tenants is that the floorplan is just too small, and everything is outdated.

Regarding the 1717 E 9th St Building (East Ohio Gas Building), if I recall correctly, that building was sold just a couple years ago.  The new owner was supposed to renovate the building into Class A office space.

 

Does anyone else remember this?

 

What a shame to have another vacant building on 9th Street (along with the Ameritrust Tower).

CLEVELAND — The developer responsible for Legacy Village and Steelyard Commons wants to build a business park linked to multiple modes of transportation on Cleveland's East Side.

 

Mitchell Schneider's 79th Street Associates LLC won approval of a $9.7 million loan Monday from the Ohio Development Financing Advisory Council.

 

The loan must be approved by the state Controlling Board. The "logistics and distribution" financing flows from Ohio's $1.57 billion job-stimulus plan, a chunk of which is devoted to improved movement of goods by roads, rail, water and air...

^Where on E 79th is this? I'm not familiar with the former White Motor complex.

Wonder what kind of businesses he's looking to attract here .. sounds like light industrial, probably?

Wow! This is big.

It's great to see a developer put money into the neighborhoods, no question that this will benefit the surrounding area.  Great to see!  I believe one of the buildings in the complex was converted to offices (which will probably be the structure which isn't scrapped).  Hope some renderings show up soon!

The complex is massive.  There is a bunch of crappy tired non descript warehouses towards the E.72nd side, I'd assume / hope that is what they are referring to for demolition.  The brick buildings towards E.79th are actually quite interesting and would be a shame to lose.  I'd love to know how much of this money is going just towards environmental clean up... just from driving by... looks like there is an awful lot to do.

On November 22, 2006, the largely vacant building was bought by New York City-based Sovereign Partners, LLC for around $12 million. The buying group plans on making certain improvements to the building, with the details to be announced in early 2007.

Um, no. There's a new building going up between the old AAA building and Fox 8 building. The HoJo is on the other side of Fox 8. I have no idea what it is, but considering the proximity to the AAA building, I'm guessing its an addition to it. There doesn't seem to be enough room between those buildings for a separate plot of land.

Saw this on Westlake Reed Leskosky's website. Have no idea of the history behind it or if it's just spec work by them. Anyone know?

Ground Breaking Ceremony

 

After ten years of anticipation and hard work, Horizon Science Academy, with the cooperation of  Concept Schools and  Martini Construction, was able to break ground for our new sport complex. The complex will house a gymnasium as well as a music, art and the JROTC department. Horizon Science Academy Cleveland held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday  Oct. 23rd  08 to commemorate the start of  construction of a new gymnasium.

 

The charter high school, located in the circular building on South Marginal Road that once housed the AAA, hosted many guests for the event, as well as its 500 students and their families. The new complex will serve the school as well as the surrounding community.

The groundbreaking caps a good year for the school, which found out in August that it received an “EXCELLENT" rating from the state.
