February 3, 201015 yr Is $121MM enough to build a new federal building? I have no clue how much a building like this would cost today, especially with post OKC/9-11 security. But, the current building is on a really desireable intersection...
February 3, 201015 yr ^ So then the whole building will look different? Do a Google image search for "One Indiana Square" which is a tower in Indianapolis. They recently completed a facade replacement on this building that I think is similar to what they are suggesting for the Federal Building. This one was done for different reasons (tornado damage) but it has definitly changed the appearance of the building for the better, in my opinion.

February 3, 201015 yr Author It's a PDF, so I'll host it for a while at: http://members.cox.net/kenatsun/Tremont%202009%20investments.pdf EDIT: After looking at the map, I didn't know there was a Ukranium Museum & Archives! February 3, 201015 yr This is a bit off topic and several months old, but as a response to the Ukrainian Museum this is pertinent and could be considered "random" development-in-waiting: UMA purchases Holowczak property
February 3, 201015 yr Looks like they're just planning to tear down the house on the front of the property and use the property for parking and storage for a while.
February 4, 201015 yr Someone stated: "It's absolutely being done to save energy - read the article; it clearly states that the building was designed in an era when energy conservation never crossed anyones' mind." I hope that notion is regarding the construction industry for the most part of how it was...because It really did cross many people's minds.....but so similar, like today, too many are busy ignoring it and passing the buck to another generation. I just hope it looks good when it is finished. Could be interesting.
February 4, 201015 yr Nice of Tremont to include the Walgreens on Clark as a net investment in the neighborhood. That Walgreens replaced two other ones which were shut down and are now huge vacant and untended eyesores.

I just hope it looks good when it is finished. Could be interesting. I wouldn't call it passing the buck... they just analysed the cost of more energy efficient windows versus the benefit of reduced utility costs. At that time heating and cooling costs were so cheap that they didn't think the added cost was worth it. In the end, it was a simple business decision, not an issue of them "passing the buck".

Now I know there is one and where it is!! :-D Allegedly, it is home to the largest collection of Ukrainian artifacts outside of Kiev :) Excuse my ignorance, was that sarcasm? Nope, absolutely no sarcasm. I actually have heard this a number of times. This archive is nearly 60 years old and has accumulated tens of thousands of items, including more than 20,000 books alone. I would wager that it's pretty close to accurate (i.e. if it's not the largest collection outside of Kiev, I presume it's one of the largest and certainly gigantic in terms of an American collection).
February 14, 201015 yr Some big changes may be coming for East Cleveland, including some major demolitions. But also, proposed connectivity to University Circle via Euclid Ave. New Mayor Gary Norton hopes to bring big changes to struggling East Cleveland By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer February 14, 2010, 4:20AM EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- This time, it could be different for East Cleveland. Decades of dysfunction have ravaged this poor, inner-ring suburb of Cleveland, leaving it with moonscape lots awaiting development on Euclid Avenue, hundreds of vacant houses and some of the grimmest economic statistics in the state. February 14, 201015 yr The connection to University Circle is a no-brainer for EC, and should have been pursued by the city leaders years ago. I mean the city BOARDERS University Circle- and has the Red Line and Healthline running through it. Why not take advantage of the geographic location? Well, we know the answer. I'm hoping that EC will be able to draw residents who want to live closer to the Circle. I agree with the new mayor- gentrification is NOT a bad word for this city. Though a lot of EC's housing and building stock is in need of major repair, the city still has some very large, beautiful homes just south of Euclid on some of the residential streets- again- bordering University Circle.
February 17, 201015 yr It looks like work has started on the space next to Teresa's Pizza on Euclid. Do we know what is going in this space? I thought I heard a Souper Market at one point. It's not very wide but does go back pretty damn far.
February 17, 201015 yr From the Souper Market website, Locations page: Where will the next one be?? Currently, the next Souper Market is looking to be open on Euclid Ave near Public Square. There may also be one somewhere on the east side as, well as Oberlin in 2010! Stay posted!! http://www.thesoupermarket.com/locations.html
February 17, 201015 yr There may also be one somewhere on the east side http://www.thesoupermarket.com/locations.html Could that be the one that opened last month at Carnegie and E 75th?

February 17, 201015 yr I don't think the cat is out of the bag yet, and I don't like to let loose announcements that owners / developers may like to make on their own. sorry. :-) as i mentioned at some point, it something that will "fit in" with the jimmy john's, theresa's line up.

"It" better be open nights and weekends. I don't always want to have to spend a fortune to go out downtown. *Humph.*
February 21, 201015 yr Today as i was driving all over the east side looking for this great wing place, i saw a really nice midrise on 93rd and Quincy. Anyone know what this bldg is? It resembles a mini Vegas casino. BTW, I did find the wing place, its a tiny little store called Daileys, on 116th and Buckeye. The best jerk wings!
February 21, 201015 yr Indeed: http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/?FORM=MLOMAP&PUBL=GOOGLE&crea=userid1743go6a1c1270db6e7f374a897e012428c985e#/crtyq9lmrwgkb961
February 22, 201015 yr That's the one. I believe when the plans for this were first presented I made the exact same comment. Except now I cannot find that thread/comment.
February 22, 201015 yr I can take a more recent photo if necessary. We've got a fabulous view of it from our lab, hahaha.
February 22, 201015 yr I'll have to try that wing place, it's right by me. I love how we build decent midrises here only for jail purposes. Close to schools and museums, fantastic downtown view... just sell some crack and you're in. Heaven forbid we build something so impressive for willing Cleveland residents.
February 23, 201015 yr Related to the potential recladding of the Federal Building, from wkyc.com: http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=131162&catid=3 "The federal government wants to install a new energy saving exterior on the Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building in downtown Cleveland. Pricetag: $121 million. But LaTourette said discussions are underway to replace the building with a new skyscraper that meets security requirements, and doesn't cost a whole lot more. "The price tag for that was $140 million and was the highest I've seen so far," said LaTourette." clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
February 23, 201015 yr But LaTourette said discussions are underway to replace the building with a new skyscraper that meets security requirements, and doesn't cost a whole lot more. A new skyscraper?? Go on Mr. LaTourette, we're all listening!
February 23, 201015 yr A new skyscraper is exciting. But if the point is to make the building more environmentally friendly, the old saying goes that the most green building is the one that already is built.
February 23, 201015 yr A new building is needed due to the demand of space. Currently the biggest tennant in the building has to lease several floors across the street in North Point Tower to accommodate its staff. Long ago, as I am sure everyone on this forum knows, there were talks of building a tower in the East Bank project.
February 23, 201015 yr "Currently the biggest tennant in the building has to lease several floors across the street in North Point Tower to accommodate its staff." I wasn't aware of that; I thought it just needed retrofitting for energy savings, but interesting to know! clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

Currently the biggest tennant in the building has to lease several floors across the street in North Point Tower to accommodate its staff. Long ago, as I am sure everyone on this forum knows, there were talks of building a tower in the East Bank project. I completely forgot about that! It is exciting to hear that we may end up with another skyscraper downtown! I've learned not to get my hopes up though, and take the wait-and-see approach. But if LaTourette is speaking on it, there may be a serious proposal for this!
February 23, 201015 yr I investigated LaTourettes comments and from what I am being told he was most likely miss quoted. He was probably referencing the past project of building a tower in the East Bank that never happened. Instead money was poured into the current federal building retrofitting floors, and updating security around the building to required standards. Don't get to excited, I think the govt would rather pack people in like sardines and focus on "Green" improvements, than build a new building.
February 23, 201015 yr Just checked the story again and the quote now says "there were discussions to replace the building" instead of "discussions are underway." Buzzkill.
February 23, 201015 yr A fear of mine in this regard is that a new building would not be built in the center of downtown and address the street, but would be a fortess on the fringes of downtown and quite likely a low rise given the governments concern with security. Maybe nothing as bad as FBI headquarters on Lakeside, but perhaps something close.

Maybe nothing as bad as FBI headquarters on Lakeside, but perhaps something close. And thats likely what it would have been with the necessary buffer etc.... I wasnt a fan of moving people to that secluded FEB site, and glad they will stay where they are. Its great if they need to lease space in other buildings, it only helps to tighten up the market. I had thought the idea had moved to making the current space acceptable for the government purposes that it served and had been undergoing the necessary changes.... Shame shame channel 3!

February 26, 201015 yr Beauties to behold: Our quiet landmarks hold shining examples of historic architecture Yet even though it sits in the heart of downtown, with the Goddess of Freedom perched atop a 125-foot-high central column, the monument easily ranks among the city's most under-appreciated treasures. There's no accurate count of attendance, but in recent years, only about 9,000 visitors a year signed the guest book inside. Perhaps because traffic lanes surround it, or because it is set well back from sidewalks atop tall staircases, the monument seems to stand aloof as a container of well-guarded secrets available only to the initiated. Nevertheless, thanks to a recently completed $2 million renovation, it's a more welcoming and rewarding place to see than it has been in years. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2010/02/beauties_to_behold_our_quiet_l.html
March 4, 201015 yr City of Cleveland finally moves ahead on building a recreation center for North Collinwood By Mark Gillispie, The Plain Dealer March 03, 2010, 12:24PM An architectural rendering of the new recreation center the city of Cleveland plans to build in the North Collinwood neighborhood.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland has finally committed to building a recreation center on Lake Shore Boulevard in the North Collinwood neighborhood. City officials today awarded a $9.6 million contract to Panzica Construction to build the center in a former big-box retail store on Lake Shore Boulevard across from Euclid Beach State Park. MORE AT http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2010/03/city_of_cleveland_finally_move.html
March 4, 201015 yr ^That should be good for the neighborhood. That hideous, gutted Big Lots which has sat vacant for 10 years on Lakeshore is finally going to get renovated into something useful. I was at the City Planning Commission when this was presented a few months back, and the design of this is indeed something you would expect to see in a suburb like Solon (not necessarily a bad thing, concerning rec-centers), and should help add energy to this part of Lakeshore.
March 4, 201015 yr That is a great adaptive re-use for the building. I can't believe that they haven't done any better renderings. If I'm not mistaken those are more than a couple years old. Probably wouldn't get paid for them though...I guess.
March 9, 201015 yr Nobody posted this yet? Galleria mall is giant greenhouse, raising organic crops in Cleveland By Sarah Crump, The Plain Dealer ...This place looks like a giant greenhouse. Now Vicky Poole, the Galleria's marketing and events director, who worked on her grandpa's farm as a child, expects that by late spring or early summer, there will be fresh tomatoes for sale among the shops and galleries at the downtown Cleveland mall. Very fresh -- as in vine-grown in bags and troughs hanging from steel stair banisters and ceiling beams in the shopping center that stretches between East Ninth and East 12th streets. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/02/galleria_has_gardens_now.html
