Cleveland: New CMHA campus construction underway

CLEVELAND -- Will it be an office palace in the middle of a sea of poverty or a difference-making project that boosts the struggling neighborhood's economy?

The new headquarters for the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority is starting to take shape at the corner of East 80th Street and Kinsman Avenue.

CMHA is creating a "building boom" along that part of Kinsman.

Local landmark closing

Parma driving range will close doors

PARMA, Ohio - The huge golf ball that can be seen from Brookpark Road in Parma will soon be gone.  It's been at the Brookpark Golf Range for some 30 years. But the actual driving range has been there even longer, more than 60 years.

The golf range is  closing May 3. The popular Dragon Gate Restaurant in front of the range will have to move. The restaurant is looking for a new location.

The VA clinic is expected to create at least 150 jobs.  A groundbreaking ceremony is expected to happen in May.

Also, you could buy a beer out of a soda machine there!  It's worth the trip just for that experience.

Hey, do we have a thread on the new super cool skate park scheduled for the Flats??

Ok, that's a very lazy post...but that's all I can offer right now.

No but we've had some conversation.  You being a mod should be able to pull all those individual post into one thread, right?  ;)

It could probably go in the "flats (non stonebridge)" thread

Cuyahoga commissioners consider payment for escalating cost of Juvenile Justice Center

By Laura Johnston, The Plain Dealer

May 11, 2010, 1:40PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cuyahoga County commissioners today approved a $400,000 bill from an engineering firm, bringing its total payment to $4.1 million more than its contract called for eight years ago.

All told, Ralph Tyler Companies has collected $9.6 million to design the inside and outside of a Juvenile Justice Center on Cleveland's East Side. The contract awarded to the Cleveland company in 2002 was for $5.4 million.

The bulk of Tyler's extra work -- $3.1 million worth -- resulted from a 2005 decision by county officials to add a court tower to a planned detention center. The latest bill is for additional work, including the designing of parking lots and sidewalks.

Collinwood Recreation Center Breaks Ground May 15

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the Collinwood Recreation Center will take place on May 15, 2010 at 10 a.m. with remarks by honored guests including Mayor Frank Jackson, Sen. George Voinovich, Ward 11 Councilman Michael D. Polensek, and other dignitaries.

The Collinwood Recreation Center will be located at 16500 Lakeshore Boulevard on the 5-acre site of the former Big Lots / K-Mart property.  The $11.9 million facility will house the Cleveland’s first indoor water park with a monster slide and full swimming pool, as well as a regulation-sized basketball court, three-lane walking/jogging track, kitchen facilities, Senior Center,  aerobics, and fitness/exercise rooms. In addition, there will be a community room, computer center and offices for city employees.

Historic emblems restored in the gardens of Cleveland's Soldiers and Sailors Monument

By Susan Love, The Plain Dealer

June 02, 2010, 10:00PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Every time historian Tim Daley looks closely at downtown Cleveland's iconic Soldiers and Sailors Monument -- perhaps while leading a school tour or passingly admiring, for the 100th time, the massive granite and sandstone Civil War memorial -- he sees something new.

Daley recently has been finding a lot of detail work to admire in the 1894 landmark that towers more than 125 feet above the traffic and talking buses circling Public Square. Architectural gems in the structure, built to honor the 9,000 Cuyahoga County residents who served in the Civil War, stand out again thanks to a recently completed $2 million restoration.

From the end of the 1800s until the early 1940s, flowers in three of the surrounding rectangular grassy areas were arranged to reproduce 24 U.S. Army corps badges (designed as a system of organizing groups within the Army); in the fourth grassy area, on the Superior Avenue side, five badges of post-Civil War organizations were reproduced.

Soldiers and Sailors Monument hosts grand reopening after $2 million restoration

By Brian Albrecht

June 04, 2010, 7:06AM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Remember that scene in the 1939 movie "The Wizard of Oz" when Dorothy Gale's house is swept from Kansas by a tornado, crash-lands in Oz, and she emerges from its dreary, black-and-white confines to a world of dazzling color?

When it comes to the newly restored Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Public Square, as Dorothy would say, "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

That's how Jim Tabaczynski, spokesman for the Soldiers and Sailors Monument Commission which manages the county-owned structure, recently described the two-year, $2 million transformation of the 116-year-old edifice, which will be the site of grand re-opening festivities tonight and Saturday. Gov. Ted Strickland will give the keynote address Saturday.

I as there for the grand reopening of the monument.

Pretty cool!

To anyone who goes, please talk up how great it would be to have the 43rd floor putdoor part of the observation deck open as well.  Maybe pay and extra $2.00 to go there.

I also have this posted in the Terminal Tower Thread.  Is a double posting ok?

Actually, it probably should go there rather than here. This section is for new construction or renovation projects.

Euclid Beach Grand Carousel returning for public use

By: Garrett Downing

CLEVELAND - The Euclid Beach Grand Carousel is returning to public use and will once again be fully functional.

The detials will be released at a news conference at 10 a.m. today at the Western Reserve Historical Society on East Boulevard.

The landmark was installed at the park in 1910, but it moved to Maine in the late 1960s. But it has returned to the historical society, and will soon be back at the park.

http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/euclid-beach-grand-carousel-returning-for-public-use

Remember the Euclid Beach Park Carousel? Well – it’s coming back!

We are giving our friends advance notice of this exciting news before the official public announcement.

WRHS is collaborating with the Euclid Beach Park Carousel Society, a group comprised of many long-time supporters of the Carousel and making it available, once again, to the public to enjoy. Together we are undertaking this project to place the Carousel inside the WRHS University Circle Complex – where it can be seen and ridden by the more than 2.5 million people who visit University Circle annually.

This project produces long-term benefits: creates another world-class destination point for University Circle; contributes to the economic development of the neighborhood, city and region; provides a family-friendly activity at WRHS; and increases the financial stability of WRHS. Most importantly, the arrival of the Carousel supports a top WRHS priority – creating new memories by sharing the past. Imagine the magic of grandparents bringing their grandchildren to ride the carousel they rode while courting. Imagine the magic of parents and children riding this historic carousel together.

We hope to have the Carousel operating inside WRHS walls within three years. Further details of this project will be shared as it moves forward.

This is an exciting and optimistic time for WRHS, a historical gem of Northeast Ohio culture. Together, we can ensure that WRHS thrives along with our community and region.

We thank you for your continued support.

Nice to see an addition to the collection in light of all the recent subtractions.

Indeed!  I guess they wont have any trouble making room for it.

The cement plant between e.40 and e.55 on the North side of Chester is being dismantled for the NEW home of the 3rd District Cleveland Police Headquarters, I believe its budgeted at $11 million

Will that leave a vacancy somewhere else?

Thats odd.  Since there is the building just east of downtown by CSU/Tower Press, that they basically vacated (I thought to consolidate services).

The current HQ at 10300 Chester will be vacated, I have no idea what the city plans to do with the property, I m sure try to sell it, the building is quite deplorable. The Payne avenue building is home to some specialized units as well as dispatch. I have been told that the long range goals of the city are to turn the current City of Cleveland portion of the Justice Center in to jails and move all of the specialized units into Payne Avenue. But apparently this has been the rumor for the past 10 years and there is only minimal movement towards this since then

The property on 10300 Chester...will be prime real estate here in the next 5-10 years.  I'm not too worried.

Is this the same building the fire dept is in?

No, next block over to the East of the fire station. I actually hope the City holds on to it for 5-10 years so they will get what its WORTH. The current location is almost to the extreme eastern boundary of the 3rd district area after the old 5th district became the NEW 3rd, 2-3 years ago when they downsized from 6 districts to 5, and wanted to make the MUCH needed new HQ more centrally located for response times in the new district.

Ahh, thanks.  Hopefully someone will consolidate that 3rd district building , the library, the power transfer station, and those parking lots and redevelop that whole half of the block.

Anyone know whats going on in the field between the Tri-c metro baseball field/track and the Arbor Park development between Community College drive and Woodland? Its looks like they are starting to grade it out.

1926 Cleveland firehouse at Lorain-Carnegie (Hope Memorial) Bridge slated to become museum

Published: Tuesday, July 06, 2010, 9:58 AM

Peter Krouse, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The two-story sandstone building at the eastern entrance to the Lorain-Carnegie (Hope Memorial) Bridge hasn't been a working fire station for nearly 30 years.

Now old Fire Station No. 28, built in 1926, is being resuscitated.

It's slated to become the Western Reserve Fire Museum and Education Center, a repository for local firefighting lore and an outlet for teaching fire safety, especially to children.

^^That's going to be a neat addition to a "forgotten" corner of Downtown.

Yeah...yeah.... I wrote an article about this project for Sun Newspapers about five years ago. Glad to see the PD is right on top of things!

Quick update on the Bluestone development in Cleveland Hts.  They are moving closer to the plan to put Brownstones on the parcel the sales center is currently located (running level with and right next to the condo building on Mayfield Rd) going all the way back to the first set of cluster homes.  No renderings yet.... just footprints.  If built three stories as planned with a roof top deck, there could be some decent lake views for some units (depending on whether any trees block the sightlines).

The condo building is selling, albeit slowly.  They have had much more success moving the cluster homes.  Price points for this developement come close to $400,000 on the high-end and can vary greatly due to the ability to custom design the interior to suit the buyer's preferences.

Not really a physical development... but google.maps recently updated its aerial shots of Cleveland.  Not exactly sure of the data, but looks to be late spring/early summer of this year.

It was definately before June 5th.

I noticed that. I like the old image better, it seemed better quality and more green! Now it makes it look more southwestern like phoenix or las vegas.

I agree.  It looks like it was taken early on a weekend morning giving everything a weird, grayish sun glared look and the city looks abandoned.  Oh well.  Just wait another 6 months and it will probably change again.

Yeah i remember the old one was pretty new too because the one before that, the grass on the science centers parking garage was dead and then the old one it was living. But oh well, it will change eventually like you said

its from may 30, 2010. its not just cleveland.  My hometown of chardon is from the same date too, so maybe its a majority of northeast ohio that has been updated

Demo is proceeding on some hospital buildings and on the Central Medical building.

Here's an article outlining the plans for the campus.  From Crain's Cleveland, via St. Vincent's website:

http://www.stvincentcharity.com/news/in-the-news/Crains_Cleveland_Business_Healthy_growth_plans

Highlights include:

-demolition of three of the older hospital buildings

-construction of a new 3 story, 110,000 sq ft surgery center

-new entrance and facade, facing Downtown Cleveland

-new parking, eventually structured, plus greenspace

One of the City Club's retail spaces is undergoing renovation to become an Arabica Coffee.  Should be a nice addition to the area.

Arabica, nice.

Unrelated, it looks like there's some action in the corner retail spot of the Parkview/Allerton apartments (13th and Chester).  Anyone heard anything?

Wasn't there an Arabica on Euclid many years ago in the ground floor of the City Club building?

I don't know.  How many years ago?
