Hey everyone, just wanted to announce a secret lil project I've been working on the past three months, which hopefully explains why I haven't made as many renderings as of late:   I've alway

While riding this weekend, I noticed that the buildings on the NE corner of Brainard and Mayfield (right next to Church of St. Clare) had been demolished.  Did an internet search and it appears that a Key Bank branch will be built there.  Nothing to get excited about.  Just an FYI in case anyone was curious.

That article is a year old tho, so I'm not sure if there is any updated info.

eta: actually found some more info in another article

This paragraph, plus the fact that this reprinted Crain's article doesn't show on the Crain's site, makes me think this is an old article....

Interviewed through an interpreter, investor group leader Shaojun Dong said he decided to buy the property because of its proximity to University Circle's health care institutions and the development potential stemming from the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority's plan to move Cleveland's port to a site at the north end of East 55th Street.

I'm not sure if this has been posted anywhere on the site, but here's a great video about Downtown Cleveland developments:

a great video. Cleveland is on its way back

Well done

Awesome. I'm keeping that link in my back pocket to show to people. Very very well done.

wow

Outstanding!

That is an awesome video :)

That was more impressive than anything to come out of "Cleveland+".

Great vid!  I loved it!

That video was awesome. Does anyone know who made it??

That gave me goosebumps.  Well done.

DCA was listed at the end.

Great video!.....Now for step two....let's get away from the screen and let's make the city look just as good in person as it does in the videos by doing the simple things. I have mentioned them and have taken initiative on them to the point of vomiting so no need to list. But, we all can make a difference collectively.

What is going on in the fenced off lot between Fenway Senior Housing and the Auto shop on Euclid (right accross from the Clinic)?

That was more impressive than anything to come out of "Cleveland+".

I agree. Even though, the slogan could be a bit better.. the footage was excellent as was the graphics. Positive videos about cities like that, which are well done, are hard to come by.

So it sounds like a lot of projects have to get underway by the end of the year in order to claim tax benefits.  I think this board will light up between now and Jan. 1

It's already lighting up! Lots going on.

I didnt see this posted anywhere, so here it tis...

U.S. Coast Guard to hold groundbreaking ceremony for new facility at Cleveland moorings

CLEVELAND - The U.S. Coast Guard is scheduled to host a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new facility at the Cleveland moorings to replace the current buildings, Tuesday, at 3 p.m.

Scheduled to attend the ceremony are: Rear Adm. Michael Parks, commander of the Ninth Coast Guard District; Ohio Senator George Voinovich; and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson.

The Fiscal Year 2010 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill provided $16.8 million in funding "to complete the project proposal to renovate, improve, or construct a new Station and Marine Safety Unit Cleveland Harbor, Ohio, and to begin work on this project."  $16.8 million funds the first phase of the project; constructing a two-story operations building on vacant land just west of the existing main building.

I dont think the design is bad I just wish something better would have gone in that spot

Agreed. Put this further east.

That looks like an administration building for the Rock Hall. Wonder how many people will knock on the Coast Guard's door asking for Hendrix Revival tickets?

The building definitely fits into the area well so at least that is good. I just wish that location was better used.

The idea of converting the rooftops of the Huntington and Willard Park garages into parks is an intriguing idea I have never heard mentioned before.  That said, I park on the roof of Huntington several times each month and would miss it.  The lower levels of that garage are horrific to deal with IMO.

I ate at the House of Cues over the weekend (great food btw) and learned that they will be closing down at the end of the year.  The owner was bought out and it will be turned into a martini/wine bar.

Eh... How many billiards clubs do we have downtown vs wine/martini bars?

The House of Cues was the only true Pool Hall downtown that I knew of.  I mean, the Corner Alley has a table or two, but it's not really a true pool hall.  The House of Cues has 5 tables.

House of Cues had pretty good food - I think I had some Mexican dishes last time I was there - but the restaurant always seemed kind of empty.

There used to be a Luchita's in there, but they closed. Not sure if they continued serving Mexican without the "name" or what.  I think the location is kind of bad - nowhere to park nearby that seems obvious, and not among other businesses.  But I agree with KJP, *sigh* martini bar, do we really need more of those?

Hey KJP, can you update the first page of this?

  • Author

Actually the first page should probably be deleted since we have (had) threads created for all of those projects since then. But I think it's also interesting to see in one place what were the big projects in Cleveland 5+ years ago. I'd hate to delete it because it's like deleting an archival history.

If you run into anyone who says there's nothing happening development-wise in Cleveland, send them this link. Very impressive!.....

Any news on the Courthouse Plaza idea? ClevelandOhio brought up the first page so I went back to look at all the projects, and I noticed the Courthouse Plaza website has a completely different design then the photo on the forum (a 42 story mixed use tower that has a pretty sharp block-style design). The information next to it mentions the $2 billion in development downtown so it sounds fairly recent. Any word on this? Or is there another forum this project is under?

^I cant see the design your talking about

No word.  42 story residential towers can't get financing at the moment and, likely, for the foreseeable future.  Hell.... a 10 story residential tower would have trouble getting financed.  Moreover, the plans for CHP were put on hold well prior to the credit crunch.

Ahh, thanks KJP for the forum link. The image I saw was in MayDay's post of the 3 alternative designs (it was the 2nd design that was on the website) in your link. Looked really cool, too bad the city isn't likely to build anything that substantial for another decade.

  • Author

Why another decade? Who can predict that far into the future?

it looks like numb3rs on frankfurt downtown is now tinkerers (or something similar).  it's a nice high quality vinyl banner.  hadn't seen anything on planning or design review about new signs for this place.

It hasnt been numbers for 10 years or so?  What was the last place there, motion?

Ive been known to throw back at the little bar

It was Motion, but it did become Numbers for maybe a month or two.  It was a little internet gambling cafe.  Don't think they had any success at all.  Whatever it's called now, it's a night club.  Only open Thursday thru Saturday from like 9-2:30.

Miceli Dairy Products describes plan for expansion in Cleveland

Published: Thursday, January 06, 2011, 10:00 AM    Updated: Thursday, January 06, 2011, 3:02 PM

By Marcia Pledger, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It seems an unlikely place for one of the nation's largest ricotta cheese makers.

The 62-year-old Miceli Dairy Products on East 90th Street in Cleveland is surrounded by vacant land and run-down buildings. But Chief Executive Officer Joe Miceli, who grew up in a nearby house along with his siblings, sees a neighborhood full of potential.

"They call this the forgotten triangle," Miceli said. "That's not the way we look at it. We think it's an ideal spot."

It's the spot where the Miceli family plans to break ground this summer on a $16 million to $20 million expansion of its operation south of Buckeye Road that will add 60 workers to its 138-employee work force within five years.

^ Orlando Baking Company on East 75th a few blocks south of Woodland is also planning an expansion.  It's not too far from Miceli.
