My impression has been that both 2100 and the Women's Shelter on Payne (22ndish?) are both generally beyond recommended capacity. I guess that doesn't mean that people might not be guaranteed a bed elsewhere, though. Cleveland does have an anti-panhandling ordinance, but I believe it's set up in an area pretty narrowly around Public Square; I have seen it enforced at least twice on Public Square. While I understand people's discomfort with it, it's a more pronounced problem in other cities, and as many forumers have suggested, the real solution is not trying to hide our citizens with fewer means and instead focusing on increasing the number of other pedestrians downtown. More eyes on the street = more comfort with people of all different backgrounds.

I agree that solving the problem will take more than banning it.  This city has thousands of abandoned homes, surely something could be done.  Empty homes... homeless people.  Shouldn't be so difficult.  Other (fully occupied) cities don't have the same option.  But I do support a panhandling ban, and enforcement of it, in areas like E4th and the front door of the visitors bureau.  They're doing themselves more harm than good by chasing people away from the city.

I haven't seen this posted yet -- Fairview Hospital is getting a $76 million renovation:

Ohio's Fairview Hospital to Undergo $76M Expansion

Written by Jaimie Oh | February 28, 2011

Fairview Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, has announced a $76 million renovation and construction project to modernize the 120-year-old hospital, according to a Crain's Cleveland Business news report.

The 125,000-square-foot expansion project is set to begin at the end of March. By the end of the project, the hospital will feature a new 52-bed emergency department and a 26-bed intensive care unit. The hospital will also add another 25,000-square-foot space that is expected to be done in early 2013, according to the report.

^No word on the helipad dispute yet?

it was nixed by local residents and the city council due to the fact it would "lower house prices" from the "constant helicopter flights". I live in westpark, we have a friggin flight path directly over our heads, i really dont think a potential occasional helicopter is the cause of westparks falling home values.

Cleveland Board of Zoning Appeals rejects Fairview Hospital's request for helipad

Published: Thursday, February 03, 2011, 10:23 AM

  By Ken Prendergast, Sun News

CLEVELAND Fairview Hospital is considering whether it will appeal a decision by a city review board to deny approval of a helipad atop an expanded emergency department and intensive care unit.

The Board of Zoning Appeals denied Cleveland Clinic’s application for a variance to add a rooftop helicopter landing pad to an expanded ED/ICU it wants to build.

All other applications relating to proposed 153,470-square-foot expansion of the existing, overcrowded ED/ICU were approved by the BZA.

Cleveland school officials consider selling historic downtown headquartersPublished: Monday, March 21, 2011, 6:00 PM

By Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland schools' downtown headquarters sits on prime real estate, across from where crews are working on the new medical mart and convention center.

The property's potential value is not lost on a school system scratching for cash.

Officials are seriously considering selling the historic building on East Sixth Street, though they as yet don't know where employees would move. The six-story, 161,672-square-foot structure is laid out inefficiently and requires extensive repairs, interim Chief Executive Officer Peter Raskind said Monday.

"Over time, it's evident not a lot of money has been invested in this building," he told central-office staff as the room rippled with knowing laughter.

^already being discussed in mall renovation thread

Don't know if this was posted anywhere, but I wasn't sure which topic would be most appropriate.

I don't have a link, but in the newest edition of Cleveland Magazine, James Levin is featured and there is a blurb where he says he is working on a project to develop the Detroit-Superior bridge, streetcar level, permanently!

^ Develop the lower level as what? It could be a Restaurant, Ballroom (image a giant wedding reception spanning the entire Flats?), skyless park, Street car transit line--many, many things.

^ awesome news, but what about ingenuity fest?

^I know, it doesn't say.  there is no interview, its just a list of his (and other clevelanders) favorite things, and it has a blurb saying that.  I hope someone has more info.

I think it should be a permanent event space.  I would love to see mini Ingenuity Fests every weekend during the summer.

I haven't seen anything official yet, but have heard that a new hotel--to be a Hilton--will be built on St. Clair near (and because of) the Medical Mart/CC.  As far as I know, this is a separate project from the rehabilitation and rebranding of the Crowne Plaza. :-)

Don't know where on St. Clair.

where did you hear that?

The southwest corner of W 3rd would make a lot of sense from the developers standpoint.

Great to hear, but since it's not an official announcement, let's keep the discussion in "Random Developments". Once it's official we can give it its own thread.

I have now separately caught wind of some rumblings which would match up with Pugu's post.  I didn't hear anything brand specific, but it definitely is a separate deal from the Crown Plaza. This is going to make for some really interesting conversation on this board.

That said, and I don't mean to be a pessimist, but there is no f'in way the FEB hotel, the schofield, the CP, and this new build all will get the green light on speculation.  JMO.

Whoa...thanks for the heads up Pugu and Hts121.

Isn't the FEB (Aloft) hotel already a go?  Did that change?

And to add to the speculation, wasn't there talk of converting the Huntington Building into a hotel as well?

^There was casual talk by the new owner of Huntington, who is also a partner in the Crowne Plaza deal announced yesterday.  Aloft is a go, but I agree with Hts: there will be a lot of proposals, but after the first couple break ground after Aloft, it's hard to imagine the others following through. Unless occupancy rates really jump up in a big way,  of course.  Which I hope they do :)

Yes, Aloft is a go and fully financed TMU.  I was more referncing the group as a whole.  Tudor Arms, Aloft, and the Marriot in UC I would say are all pretty sure shots.  The group which is bound to not all come to fruition would better be stated as:

- Crown Plaza re-branding and renovation, but I would expect something to be done with this property even if it is just a slight renovation.  It will remain a hotel.

- Schofield.... although it certainly could go ahead strictly as residential IMO.  Once again, something will be done.

- Truman.... same as Schofield.

- This new Hilton (or whatever brand) rumor.... yes, there is a significant downtown... ummmm..... "holder" who has been trying to line something up for the CC/MM/Casino openings for quite some time now.

Didn't Jacobs also float a CC hotel proposal for the existing county admin site a while back?  I recall a fairly bland rendering of a 20-30 story tower.  Could that be back in play?

^Don't recall it but that would appear to be one of the longest shots given that the current county administration probably has no interest in building a new administration building.  It would have to be a really sweet deal.  What are the odds of that?  Usually the developer is the one looking for the deal.

the CP deal (while exciting) doesn't really factor into "how many hotel deals will get done". Just a brand change. The number of rooms already exist. Same thing as when double tree took over the holiday inn on lakeside.  I have always thought you would see 3 happen if we got the cc going. 1 is off the board with aloft, 2 left to go.

Fairview Hospital groundbreaking for expansion is today

CLEVELAND Officials brandishing shiny shovels will break ground today for the expansion of Fairview Hospital at a triangle of land at Lorain and Groveland avenues.

The actual site of construction for the $76 million, 135,000-square-foot expansion will be adjacent — between the triangle and the existing hospital. That’s the site of the existing physicians’ parking lot, which will be moved into a newly expanded parking deck off Old Lorain Road, behind houses on Riveredge Road.

On the old physicians’ lot, a two-story, 52-bed emergency department and a 26-bed intensive care unit will rise. The project, which will also include renovation of 25,000 square feet of existing space, is expected to be finished by early 2013.

It's funny how hospital projects add up in cost so quick.  Any other $76 million dollar project would be major news.  For a hospital, it's a small thing, and slips below the radar.
