April 11, 201114 yr http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/09/bridge_architect_miguel_rosale.html what is the status of these bridge projects?
April 11, 201114 yr Rysar has broken ground on a new phase of Bluestone in Cleveland Heights. This is the residential development built where the old JCC was located. Cluster homes, a condo building, and now townhomes, which are going to be placed on the southeast corner of the parcel, basically where the sales center is now
April 11, 201114 yr I'm trying to picture that area in my head - is that across the street from where Severance is located, with the large, empty-looking, relatively new apartments on Mayfield?
April 11, 201114 yr I'm trying to picture that area in my head - is that across the street from where Severance is located, with the large, empty-looking, relatively new apartments on Mayfield? Yes. Directly accross Mayfield from City Hall. The rendering above, if it was a photograph, would have been taken from the sidewalk in front of the Lutheran East athletic fields. The condo building, which is up on Mayfield and seen in the background of that rendering, is almost full, although it was harder to sell than the cluster homes seen in the background of my photograph. These townhomes will be built in groups of 3 and will form a rectangular shape directly east of the Condo building. The cluster homes will continue to fill up the back. One thing I really liked about the new townhome component is spiral staircases leading to a rooftop deck, which, depending on the tree line directly to the north, could very well offer lake views. It's a good, not great, project for CH.
April 11, 201114 yr You're right it's a good project for Cleve Hts. Thanks so much for the update. Yay inner-ring!

April 14, 201114 yr Author I see a wall mural is proposed for the blank south wall of the Standard Building facing the Old Stone Church and Public Square. Depending on what the mural is, I say: FINALLY. I know this isn't a construction project, but it may as well be considering how bland that wall is. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/photo/04142011/index.php "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

April 14, 201114 yr Not sure if this has been posted here or anywhere yet.... There will be a new Japanese restaurant coming to Euclid Ave near Public Square, right next to Jimmy John's (replacing Theresa's Pizza): http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2011/04/11/sly-noodle-slurping-cat-hints-at-new-noodle-shop "Sly Noodle-Slurping Cat Hints at New Noodle Shop Posted by Douglas Trattner on Mon, Apr 11, 2011 at 2:29 PM Over the past few days, Cleveland Facebook users have been catching glimpses of a cheeky noodle-slurping feline. The mascot is heralding the opening of a new Japanese noodle shop, Noodlecat, but the real mystery has been the identity of the owners behind the Cheshire-like grin. Well, the cat is out of the bag. "We wanted to have some fun with this," explains chef and owner Jonathan Sawyer. "We love the [Greenhouse] Tavern, but everything about it is huge, romantic, intense. With this we didn't want to take ourselves too seriously. It's noodles in a bowl for $10 to $13." Billed as a Japanese-American mash-up, Noodlecat takes its cues from the popular quick-casual noodle bars in New York City and elsewhere. Much of the menu is built around filled steamed buns, noodles in broth with garnishes, and Asian-tweaked starters, salads and sides. "The idea was to do the same thing we did for Roman pizza at Bar Cento for Japanese noodles here," explains Sawyer. "To present hyper-traditional dishes exactly how you would see them in Japan alongside modern versions with clever twists and seasonal ingredients." Sawyer says that he is a huge fan of this style cuisine and felt a need for it here. The 55-seat restaurant, to be located in the former Theresa's Pizza near E. Fourth and Euclid Avenue, will serve food that is "hyper-specific to the genre," says Sawyer. That means no pho, no curry, no glass noodles, no sushi. "We want the noodles to be the star." When it opens in mid summer, Noodlecat will offer steamed buns filled with BBQ pork belly, miso-seasoned veggies, and Ohio beef. The classic noodle options include cold soba noodles with ponzu, soft tofu with udon, and pork belly with ramen. A modern soup with a Jewish twist features dashi-scented chicken broth with brisket, matzo balls and poached carrots. Tons of creative sides and add-ons allow diners to customize their bowls with items like soy-braised eggs, sake-cured roe, pickled veggies, and firm tofu. Sawyer says that vegetarians will have loads of meat-free options. The concise cocktail list will include beer, wine and sake."
April 14, 201114 yr ^ Awesome and welcome! This probably should be moved to the "E.4th thread" "Filling in Euclid Ave thread" or even "Cleveland Restaurant thread"...... I know, we have too many threads....

That wall is so ripe for something really cool. Could even be iconic given how visible that wall is to public square. Don't screw it up, mural people!
April 14, 201114 yr Im not sure I get the picture and would have preferred something that "spread down" more... *edit.... I see now it says "example" http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/photo/04142011/index.php
April 14, 201114 yr So, its really more of a billboard than a mural? I don't know if leaving it blank wouldn't be better.
April 14, 201114 yr Oh lord, I hadn't clicked on the meeting agenda so didn't see that. Yeah, that better be just an "example." Expectations officially dialed way back.
April 14, 201114 yr This may be a coincidence, but I think not. I didnt realize that the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen owns the Standard building, so Im thinking it will be train related. Stumbled across this from a couple years ago. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/09/brotherhood_of_locomotive_engi.html

April 14, 201114 yr Author Whats older, the church or the building? The church -- by about 70 years. The Old Stone Church was built in the 1850s. The Standard Building was built in the 1920s. The only reason why I found the listing to the mural is because I was scouring planning commission agendas for anything about what Dan Gilbert was mentioning last night... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,25729.0.html I'm a train guy but I don't think that mural cuts it. I realize it's only an example. We'll have to see what they really have in mind for it. April 14, 201114 yr Imagine how beautiful a copy of the St Clair terra cotta work and upper-story windows would be on the PS side. A mural of windows would be the next best thing.

Any word on what it's gonna be for? I feel like usually when you see that (no windows), it is because there was a building next door (which we know in this case there wasn't since the church predates the building). I wonder if when they built it, there were plans to tear down the church or something.
April 14, 201114 yr ^ There is a 3 story building (and the plot of land it sits on obviously) that sits between the Standard Building and the church.
April 14, 201114 yr That building in between is an annex to the church which looks like it was probably built in the 50's.
April 15, 201114 yr That wall is being actively shopped around by an outdoor advertising company. The same company sold the recent wall mural on the stark office building that faces west 6 and has Huntington bank featured. The company has actuallynformed partnerships with a number of buildings downtown that have these sort of blank canvassed suitable for outdoor advertising.
April 15, 201114 yr On the south side of I-90 just before the lakeview rd exit (going eastbound) they have cleared a large amount of trees (just south of Brahtenal). What are the rules on downtown building advertising? Obviously you have the wall ad above the lizard, but wasn't there a big stink about putting up that Lebron ad years back and it was not permitted since it was an ad but they were able to get it classified as "art" thus allowing it?
April 15, 201114 yr I've been wondering about that too. I drive past this Bratenahl location fairly often; there was an "Aavailable" sign for a long time. Can't remember the details of the sign. According to the presenter from the sewer district, trucks from the nearby industries had been using Kuhlman, a residential road, as a shortcut.
April 16, 201114 yr Author OK folks, history quiz time! Why is Kuhlman Avenue named as such? Answer, between it and the railroad tracks was one of the largest manufacturers of streetcars and interurbans in the United States, the G. C. Kuhlman Car Co.: http://www.midcontinent.org/rollingstock/builders/kuhlman_carco.htm One of the factory buildings next to the tracks still stands and I believe it still says "Kuhlman" painted on the side of it. Anyway, thought you all would like to know a little bit about some of the vacant properties in the city, and why some streets are named what they are. Carry on........ April 16, 201114 yr Good stuff KJP--Cleveland is filled with this kind of history. Keep it coming!
April 18, 201114 yr Akron General planning another satellite Summa Health System planning to compete By Cheryl Powell Akron General Health System wants to beef up its health and wellness business by bringing medically based fitness centers and satellite emergency rooms into new communities. The hospital system recently signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a wellness facility on the Broadview Heights City Hall campus. The city in Cuyahoga County is offering Akron General access to about six acres of city-owned land for the project in exchange for community programs and discounted membership rates for residents, Mayor Sam Alai said. http://www.ohio.com/business/119996594.html
April 20, 201114 yr Alright guys, I got a (small) random development to announce - I just purchased this building on Cedar Road in Cleveland Heights right near Melt. I am going to replace the storefronts and gut the inside. There are two storefronts - one is about 1,000 sf the other is about 2,500 sf. I am having a "commercial garage sale" this weekend to get rid of the stuff that was left inside. I don't have tenants yet, so please let me know if you know of anyone looking for space in CH. Here is the link for the garage sale: http://cleveland.craigslist.org/gms/2331889603.html
April 20, 201114 yr Hey, what time is the garage sale? I was going to be in that area this weekend, might be fun:)

April 21, 201114 yr If you are going to gut them anyways, have you given any consideration to combining the spaces? Given, rent-wise, you probably could bring in more with them separate, but a combined space of 3,500sf might attract some interesting tenants.
April 21, 201114 yr I would have no problem with a single tenant, but since it is more likely to find 2 tenants, I am not going to combine the spaces now. If someone wants both sides, they can be combined later.
April 21, 201114 yr Sorry this isn't really a "development" news story, but I don't think it belongs in City Discussion either... Google Earth seems to have deleted Key Tower from Cleveland's 3D buildings archive... I think they may have gotten rid of it instead 113 St. Clair because of the construction. Anyone know who to tell about this?
April 21, 201114 yr No, google earth has it right. Key Tower was taken down for minor renovations last week, but they'll put it up again in a few days. I think Cleveland Scene reported it briefly.
