They overlay the 3D structures on the 2D satellite view, so you're seeing the 2D image.  The 3D building is definitely missing.

That's just the underlying aerial photograph.  I always figured that the Society building (the 3D model) and the rest of Key Center was created as one big model so it showing up on it's own is a surprise.

Thanks TBideon.  Strange they have to take it down for renovations, one would think they could just swap a new one in at any time.

May Co. is gone, too.

There is something big going up in Northfield Road between Ellacott Parkway and Emery Road right across from Thistledown. I never heard anything about it but construction is going on and it's slated to open next year in May (I think. I was driving by it). It's a retail development of some sorts that from the posters outside the construction site sort of looks like Legacy Village albeit a much smaller scale. Anyone have information on this?

Was it the new library branch?

Came across this today, and thought some perspective might be worthwhile.  It's wonderful to see so many active projects moving forward in Cleveland and there is much cause to be optimistic.  However, there's still a long way to go and, as an advocate for working toward change, I like to remind others to do more than just post on the forum whenever you can get involved.

Two months before the economy collapsed this ran in the PD, accompanied with great art.

New Construction E.14/Carnegie  I went to the Indians game tonite and I parked in one of those lots south of the Wolstein Center by E.14 and Carnegie. One of those old warehouses was torn down and there is a fenced-in construction site.  Does anyone know if something is being built there or is this site a site for the innerbelt bridge construction materials?

^ Probably just what we already know

I gave a friend from out of town a mini walking tour of downtown yesterday after the baseball game and noticed some type of contruction (saws buzzing wood on top of saw horses) in this building on West 9th...

Does anyone have any idea what is potentially going in here?  I would assume a bar/restaurant given the location but I have no idea, just happy to see something happening here.  Not sure if the embedded map is working so I also attached an image.

I've always looked at that building as an ideal yet unique location for commercial space every time I've been at Phoenix.

T7,

I was told yesterday that  a hibachi grill in going in there.

On another note, does anyone know when the rotating bridge going over to the West Bank of the Flats is going to be finished?

^The center street bridge has been closed since last July.  Repairs were supposed to take about a year.  Look for it to reopen sometime this summer.  Although I don't see much work going on when I go by on evenings and weekends.  Anyone have a sense of how much work is currently being done on site?

Hootenany & Jam40jeff,

Thanks for the info! I appreciate it.

Alright guys, I got a (small) random development to announce - I just purchased this building on Cedar Road in Cleveland Heights right near Melt.  I am going to replace the storefronts and gut the inside.  There are two storefronts - one is about 1,000 sf the other is about 2,500 sf.  I am having a "commercial garage sale" this weekend to get rid of the stuff that was left inside.  I don't have tenants yet, so please let me know if you know of anyone looking for space in CH.  Here is the link for the garage sale:

So things are moving along for me, albeit slowly.  I got an architect working on storefront renderings, just had a plumber fix the gas leak, and have some demo guys coming next weeks.  I've also had some calls and a few tours.  I get a lot of calls about nail and hair salons but I want something different.  We have enough f'in salons in CH!  Matt Fish is trying to get a tattoo shop in the neighborhood.  I have had talked to a few prospects that would be awesome for the neighborhood, but nothing yet.  We shall see, hopefully I can bring some cool tenants to the neighborhood!  If anyone kwons any good tenants, let me know.

^ Thanks for the update. I was wondering how things were going for you. Keep us updated! You should post some photo updates sometime if you have the time.

Man, come to think of it, I'm an idiot.  I rented a fisheye lens a couple weeks ago and took some shots from terminal tower observation deck (pics coming, bad weather day, but got to go on outside deck) and my bro-in-laws new restaurant (SoHo on W 25th - only got some before shots since construction hasn't started), but never stopped in at my building for some good fisheye interior shots.  The lens had some serous wide angle.  I will take some regular ones before the demo anyways.

New sign on Public Square: Huntington Bank regional headquarters

Published: Friday, June 03, 2011, 7:36 PM    Updated: Friday, June 03, 2011, 10:44 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The skyscraper at 200 Public Square, known as the BP building, finally has a name and logo after more than a decade.

Huntington Bank on Friday unveiled the signage at its new Greater Cleveland regional headquarters in the 45-story office tower in downtown Cleveland during a ceremony at the historic Soldiers' and Sailor's Monument on Public Square.

So I want to know whats going to happen to the old Huntington Building!  We don't need another empty building on that corner.  Any news?

^Looks like they're also swapping out the building's lighting system. Last night I think they were doing a test run; the lower section had no lights on (not sure if that's permanent) but the upper setbacks were cycling through green, purple, etc. and at one point they had *every* color of the rainbow (I was joking it was a pre-ceremonial honor for the Gay Games :-D )

The top half was lit up with green last night during the fireworks show at The Jake. It was pretty spectacular.

Too bad the game wasn't.......

The new lights are pretty neat and very colorful...I was surprised how much of a difference it made...

I know it is expensive to light things, but I wish Cleveland did a better job at it...There are nights I want to tape a flashlight to the guardians so there are some kind of light on them...

I know what you mean, but lighting the guardians is budgeted for - as a part of the Hope Memorial bridge improvements that are part of the bigger innerbelt bridge project.

Geez, how about replacing the low battery flashlight they have aimed at "Venus" on the corner of the Federal Courthouse; the cornice could certainly use a wattage goose as well.  The lighting of this building looks like a tacked on afterthought.

I believe there was an effort by the CMNH to reduce the lighting on skyscrapers to reduce bird collisions.

I believe there was an effort by the CMNH to reduce the lighting on skyscrapers to reduce bird collisions.

There is a Smart Lights/Safe Flights initiative that many local buildings have adopted during the spring and fall bird migrations that was championed by CMNH where building lights are kept off during migration periods.  Many other cities in the midwest have adopted the same program

I'd actually like to see less, but more thoughtfully placed skyline lighting.  We dump a tremendous amount of wasted light up into the sky.  It'd be nice to see the stars- though that may be too much to ask Downtown- it's a regional issue.

Old Arcade ripe for bargain shoppers as auction awaits

Languishing property's value set at $11.5M; city, county may be among lenders on the hook

By STAN BULLARD

4:30 am, June 6, 2011

When the Old Arcade in downtown Cleveland opened in 1890 at 401 Euclid Ave., one of the nation's first enclosed shopping centers catered to the burgeoning city's wealthy with floors of retail shops and office space.

Now the property, a landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, promises to be bargain city unless a crop of potential buyers crazed by the prospects of a new casino and convention center in town bids up the Arcade's price at a pending but still-unscheduled Cuyahoga County sheriff's sale.

A recently completed appraisal for the sheriff's office establishes the market value of the Arcade, which is home to a 203-room Hyatt hotel and retail space, at just $11.5 million. Under auction rules, the minimum bid would be two-thirds of that figure, or $7.75 million.

Just a report from a walk around the block:

-Work is ongoing at Dredger's Union.  It looks nice inside, though still quite empty.  I was a little disappointed they are using painted plywood for signage above the doors, covering up the (admittedly deteriorated) facade.

-In between the Columbia and Stanley there are barricades with Coon Restoration tagged on them.

http://www.coonrestoration.com/projects.html

My guess is they will be doing the restoration work on the Stanley.

-Sushi 86 has successfully opened at the Colonial Arcade.

-It looks like the former Kent CUDC space above Winking Lizard has been leased, and they are doing work on the inside.

-Despite what I thought were the indications that work might be restarting on the Schofield Building, it is still dead as a doornail.

Thanks for the update! I didn't realize Sushi 86 was opening that fast. Is that the plan for the Stanley?? To fix the facia?

^I hope the plan is to use Coon to fix up the Stanley.  They did a great job on WT Grant.

I walked by the Columbia Building on Sunday.  What a horrible idea to tear it down.  It looks to be in very good shape.  The entrance is very nice as well.

well, this meeting on the 9th looks like a formality according to the PD.  That is, if this Warren guy has any juice.

don't write columbia off yet.  lots of behind the scenes work....

They should just demolish that parking garage on the corner of Prospect and Ontario. They can build their welcome center and an even larger parking garage there. There is no excuse for tearing down the Columbia when there are so many other options.

^$$ (if you count that as an excuse)

^They are the ones who boxed themselves in with the constitutional amendment, that they wrote!

The city acts like the casino will go away if they don't get their way.

Sad thing is the only thing in jeopardy is the size of the kickback to City Hall cronies

^$$ (if you count that as an excuse)

Well, that is a huge excuse.  It  is what makes business go round.

But Gilbert & Co. are willing to open their checkbooks for this project.

As for the tax credits, watch them succumb to the intransigent policy that government shouldn't promote commerce and the welfare of its citizens. And it if should, it surely shouldn't do it in our evil, God-hating cities.

Great video with high quality sound!

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

The visual design was really good, but I recently attended a conference on arts and culture marketing, and one of the takeaways is how much more compelling stories about individuals can be than a series of hard numbers. This particular speaker argued that focusing exclusively on numbers tends to numb the audience, and interestingly, the larger numbers, the less relatable the information is and the less the audience feels a sense of caring. In reviewing this video, I can't help but think ... $6.8 billion ... That seems like a lot, but is it a lot compared to other cities? What is that opposite local economic output? And by the end I was just like, when will the numbers be over? Not to say you can't have hard stats ... I just wish GCP had humanized it more. What does $6.8 billion in development mean for the 20-something entrepreneur? For the school principal? For the municipal worker? For the CEO? Whoever, just make us care!

While they were both well-produced, I think the Downtown Cleveland Alliance's videos ended up a lot more compelling than this one. Still, a dramatic improvement on previous GCP messaging.
