May 15, 201213 yr I noticed there was a sign on the fence in front of this parking lot on Euclid stating "Available for Development." Either I never noticed it before or it's new. Anyone know if there's any legitimate possibilities of this site (or any other parking lots downtown) being developed anytime soon?

May 15, 201213 yr I do like the planters though. Although it's customary to put something inside of planters ... they look a little barren without plants in them :)

May 16, 201213 yr Cleveland is missing a giant toy store? Local, unique, retail stores. Yes Cleveland is missing that. We dont really have any cool, interesting, large or small, shops downtown anywhere. You may have just hurt Dredger Union's feelings The key words were cool and interesting  Sorry, no Urban Outfitters for you. But every big city has one of those. What would you suggest?

Anyone know if there's any legitimate possibilities of this site (or any other parking lots downtown) being developed anytime soon? I'd like to see the lots on either side of that garage developed while keeping the parking garage in the center intact.
May 17, 201213 yr There will be an uproar when that happens I'm sure lol. I personally can't wait tho...this is my garage and right across the street from me and hate both of those lots. And upthread...there's still another hat shop that has not been pushed out down by E4. I am not sad to see one of them go and wish the cash advance place would move also.

Not an urban outfitters fan either. Not a fan of hipster clothes really. D.U. Is way overpriced and their clothes are really hideous (sorry to those who enjoy) -- this is my opinion. It'd be nice to see real chain retailers downtown-- I know chains are a sin to the older UO posters, but chains show that there is national interest in downtown Cleveland. The fact that we don't have a single popular fast food store from downtown is kind of embarrassing, even Pittsburgh has them. It is also cool when brands have unique locations such as "Lacoste LIVE!" or Adidas silver and Nike house of hoops (as seen in soho). It's unique and attracts people to see it specifically. North face. Adidas. Nike. Old navy. Buckle. Express. Finish Line. Those are some stores that would be great to see and that I would personally use Definitely far from seeing any of these though :(

You're confusing chain RESTAURANTS with retail locations. I'm not a fan of chain restaurants and many here aren't either. In downtown we do need established retail clothing chains in the market place. No single fast food? Really? ::) ::) ::) McDonald's doesn't count? Starbucks doesn't count? Dunkin Donuts? Subway? Jimmy John's? Now when you talk about clothing stores, one of the stores you mention above is a brand extension and you cannot compare shopping in NYC to ANY city in the States. So lets not even go there! Based on what you type you appear to be confused. I say you're confused because you don't like DU because you not a fan of hipster clothes, but you turn around and suggest Lacoste. that makes no sense. Before a brand extention is opened in Cleveland we need a flagship Lacoste, and Adidas. The price point at those stores, you mention is pretty high. I shop at Adidas Silver and Y3. There are products like $350 canvas bags. We dont the population nor is the target audience (21-30) of aforementioned stores close by. If those stores did open, right now, they would be depending on visitors tourist instead of the local population. Can you afford to shop at the stores like Lacoste or Adidas? You say that you would shop at sporting goods stores, and, yuck, Old Navy. That tells me that lowered end stores are what would do well, not higher end specialty stores. Stores stay open because people shop in them not come to see - "window shop" - them. In NYC, people can window shop, in any other city, the stores need to be able to sell the current product line or be deemed failures and closed.
May 18, 201213 yr Yeah, cool and interesting young people flock to cities for unique attractions like fast food and Old Navy. :-D In seriousness, I'm not vehemently anti-chain, but I view them as externalities of increased interest, rather than attractions that those trying to build a vibrant urban environment should aspire to have. I think I've seen this same discussion a million times on this site though so I'll stop there.

May 18, 201213 yr There are definitely chain resturants in downtown Cleveland, Sprinkled around. A lot though are buried in the Galleria, Tower City and some of the Office Buildings. More shopping is what is needed and speaking of which, I believe it was KJP who posted in the Downtown offices thread that a new Boutique clothing store is opening on Prospect. Not sure if its a chain or not.
May 18, 201213 yr I'm just glad to see someone else say they think DU is overpriced, as I got smacked down for that in another thread. I like the store a lot, it's just a bit pricey IMO for Cleveland. Again, IMO.
May 18, 201213 yr ^Fortunately, whether a store or restaurant or any other business is overpriced for the market is a testable hypothesis. So if DU is still around in a year, we'll know who was right :) For the record, we've often discussed our preferences for different retail chains, but I don't think anyone has really argued categorically against having them downtown.
May 18, 201213 yr Author More shopping is what is needed and speaking of which, I believe it was KJP who posted in the Downtown offices thread that a new Boutique clothing store is opening on Prospect. Not sure if its a chain or not. I'm not sure if it's a chain either, but it's not a store you can visit in person. Instead, it's an office for an internet-based store. In NYC, people can window shop, in any other city, the stores need to be able to sell the current product line or be deemed failures and closed. You seem to have taken my post personally.. Anyways, By fast food downtown I meant to type store FRONTS (thanks for the auto correct Ipad).. Mcdonalds and dunkin donuts do not count because they are INSIDE of tower city.. not streetfront, and they close at 5/6pm. Subway, jimmy johns, and starbucks are no where near the type of fast food I was referring to. People would love to eat at Mcdonalds, Wendys, Arby's, Chick-fil-a, Chipotle, five guys... and not have the usual sub or packed lunch. This has been brought up many times around the CSU campus... with young students beginning to fill the population downtown, there IS a demand for this type of food, whether favored by UO or not. Lacoste is far from D.U.- that's ridiculous that you would lump them together. Lacoste is not 'hipster'.. it's more upscale and it's preppy. It is not 'vintage' looking at all. It is also rude to criticize someone and basically claim that they are poor because of their shopping preferences... but apparently not to you. That is your opinion about those stores, but you don't need to insult other people because you disagree... it is very hypocritical considering the MODS are always yelling at people for insulting others' opinions (I'm sure I will get yelled at for this even though I'm not doing anything wrong). Yes, I can afford to shop there? Otherwise.. I wouldn't list it as a store I would like to see. And the target audience is actually what the downtown population is... it is growing with "young professionals (21-30) and these are the types of stores you can see them wanting to shop at- I live down here and I am one of them. Not everyone is going to like the same things that you do, therefore there are many different opinions. Respect that.

I like the store a lot, it's just a bit pricey IMO for Cleveland. Again, IMO. Get used to being shot down on UO. For what it is.. I do believe it's very pricey. I have never seen anyone inside shopping and when I went in, the male worker was kind of rude and not very friendly. I don't like it, that's my opinion.. so I'm with you on that one. On the other hand, I love CLE clothing. I think it's unique and they are always very friendly inside. Definitely not overpriced either.
May 18, 201213 yr I did like CLE Clothing when I went in there. I'm thinking of compiling some stuff from there for a Father's Day thing for DH. I think I'm going to do 2 gifts for him - an LA package and a Cleveland package. He really wants us to move to LA but I know WAY better than that, but still thought it might be neat if I could get select products shipped to me from some classic places (e.g. mustard from Phillipe the Original, In & Out burger t-shirt) and put together a little package for him for father's day. I think we could shoot for taking our family vaca there next year so we can take little RNR to the Topanga Days festival, which is over Memorial Day weekend.

Also have to mention that I LOVE that CLE isn't exclusively CLE clothing.. they actually sell one or two other company's clothing in there as well. I think that's great. Collaborating works well in this case.
May 18, 201213 yr Not sure if this has been mentioned anywhere else or not ... Sorry if so. Yesterday was the Neighborhood Solutions Summit, an all-day forum for people working on neighborhood revitalization in Cleveland. The premise of the day was exploring how we redefine the community development model for the next 10 years, with a lot of emphasis on whether CDCs start to focus more holistically on issues like health outcomes, education, wealth-building, workforce development, etc., instead of so heavily on residential real estate development. If some of the stuff that's being explored right now gets implemented, this could be a HUGE shift in neighborhood development citywide (maybe new thread-worthy :)). Big philosophical questions are going to be getting answered in the next few months ... Do CDCs work on new housing construction? What's the balance between rehab subsidy and demo? What role do councilpeople play in deciding where federal community development funds get distributed? How can the CDCs react best to an expected severe cut in state and federal aid? Do we focus our community development dollars in our strongest neighborhoods or our weakest neighborhoods or a mix? Which CDCs are going to merge (it sounds like the industry is pre-supposing that mergers definitely WILL be happening)? The way this discussion is being framed, this is revisiting almost every element of the CDC model that's been used in the city with little change over 30 years, and there are very few things that aren't on the table in terms of changing that model. Big. Time. Background research that shows how big these changes might be ... ... May 18, 201213 yr For what its worth, there was a Wendys at Fourth and Euclid, but was closed to make room for either Corner Alley or the current location of the Visitors bureau. #Progress lol
May 19, 201213 yr For what its worth, there was a Wendys at Fourth and Euclid, but was closed to make room for either Corner Alley or the current location of the Visitors bureau. #Progress lol It was closed well before Corner Alley came along.
May 19, 201213 yr I guess there is really a need for more hotels downtown: http://www.wkyc.com/news/article/245412/3/Downtown-Cleveland-booked-with-weekend-events
May 19, 201213 yr I miss that Wendy's and long for their return (elsewhere of course). I like it when national chains that usually demand stand-alone huts are willing to work within downtown architecture. It's a sign that being downtown is worth something.
May 19, 201213 yr It is nice to have a quick place to go in and get some food that isn't subs or pizza. And a place that is recognizable. Id prefer a Wendys over a Mcdonalds or BK anyday. I wont eat at McDonalds, but will eat Wendys.
May 21, 201213 yr For what its worth, there was a Wendys at Fourth and Euclid, but was closed to make room for either Corner Alley or the current location of the Visitors bureau. #Progress lol Was it? I remember it being open in 05 and early 06, that's around the time they started renovating for Corner Alley. It was closed well before Corner Alley came along.
May 22, 201213 yr It closed for the construction of Corner Alley - I used to go there when i was in the NCB Building. It didn't close until 05/06. It closed the same time all those pawn shops, etc. closed up on lower Euclid. For what its worth, there was a Wendys at Fourth and Euclid, but was closed to make room for either Corner Alley or the current location of the Visitors bureau. #Progress lol It was closed well before Corner Alley came along.
May 22, 201213 yr In regards to the lack of fast food chains on downtown streets, where exactly would they go? I know some places along 9th, but a lot of the marquee spaces are occupied by the non chain restaurants. There are a few Subway restaurants on the street though. One on Euclid, One on W. St. Clair and also one on 9th I believe.

Just bring back Mr. Hero's!

Hessler_068 by KP SMITH, on Flickr pnc breaks ground on new community resource center in fairfax neighborhood A new community resource center being created by PNC Financial Services will better connect the Fairfax neighborhood's residents and small businesses to economic opportunities in Northeast Ohio. It will also celebrate the rich history and legacy of a neighborhood that was once home to Langston Hughes and houses Karamu Theatre. PNC recently broke ground on PNC Fairfax Connection, a new facility that is being built on the site of a former dry cleaner at E. 83rd St. and Carnegie Avenue. The 6,400-square-foot facility was designed by Richard Fleischman and ESI Design. PNC officials hope to celebrate a grand opening here in the fall. PNC Fairfax Connection will offer access to technology and training, resources to connect residents to jobs, and intergenerational, youth and early childhood programming. It will also help celebrate the cultural legacy of Fairfax. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/forgood/pncfairfaxconnection032212.aspx I believe I found it....
