I couldn't find an appropriate thread for the Hope Memorial Bridge.  Call me oldschool.  So I put this here for now--mods please move if necessary.

Cleveland guardian bridge lighting out, no government agency wants to make repairs

http://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/cle-guardian-bridge-lighting-out-no-government-agency-wants-to-make-repairs

These types of things have been an issue since...... since we have had a mayor that is ok with mediocrity and dysfunction.

This story reminds you of how pathetic these types of things have become, and without the pushing of the private community, there really is nobody at the city level that seems to care about such things.

Other examples have included the multiple bridge lightings, Rockefeller Park bridge and other lighting, stretches of street lighting (especially downtown).

In a properly run city, these things would be unacceptable.

Someone should contact LAND Studio with regards to the lighting out on The Hope Memorial Bridge. They were the ones responsible for the lighting and should be able to maintain their investments

I think this city has forgotten that it needs to COMPETE for residents.  We are all free agents to some extent......I lived in Cleveland for a few years 20 years ago and was shocked at how poor the services were.  Seems they've gotten worse.  I'd like to move back into the city....but leadership HAS to do better. Lights.....Garbage......potholes.....cracked poles........  This is basic stuff.

Anyone know if there was a CPC meeting today, there is no agenda posted.  Playhouse tower review was today. Looks like mjarboe[/member] is out of town.  And the planning commission Twitter sucks so don't know what happened.

An aerial lift equipment firm is building a new facility in Cleveland's industrial valley

June 22, 2017

By JAY MILLER

Ohio High Reach and Coast to Coast Equipment, two related Valley View companies that rent, sell and service aerial lift equipment, will move to the site of a former coke plant and slag dump in Cleveland's industrial valley.

The companies, owned by Carly Cahlik and Tiffany Tutin, are investing about $3.6 million in a six-acre site in the Cuyahoga Valley Industrial Center, on land formerly owned by the ArcelorMittal steel company and purchased and cleaned by the city of Cleveland. The businesses employ 30 people.

A groundbreaking is scheduled for Friday, June 23.

How to ruin your city's tree canopy (an ongoing series): fill the tree pits with concrete.

^ Wow, did they salt the earth before capping it with the concrete? You don't want to take any chances...

Sad, I really think Cleveland has done a pretty good job overall planting new trees the last couple of years.  Where is this?

Sad, I really think Cleveland has done a pretty good job overall planting new trees the last couple of years.  Where is this?

My guess, near the "BP" Building. In hindsight it's probably (hopefully) a temporary measure to keep people from getting hurt. Another sad part of this is how ridiculously expensive it is to plant trees in the city.

Twitter thread revealed these are in front of the Old Arcade on Superior. Google Street view shows trees in 2007 that looked near death in Aug 2009. By 2014 they were gone, and the caps were there by 2015.

There needs to be another 3 committee hearings, go back to council, and then be reviewed in another 3 committee hearings.

Looks like there's a S-W tower in there, but it's in the wrong place. If it's supposed to be on the Jacobs Lot or the Weston Superblock, then it should be to the left of Terminal Tower from this angle.

BTW, welcome tastybunns. Not sure where you got your nickname, and not sure I want to know. :)

^i thought that that was supposed to be the hilton.

  • Author

It's too big. The Hilton is shorter than the Justice Center.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

whatever it is its gotta be very close to Ontario as its between the Justice Center and Key, both which are offset from Ontario by only some feet. Thats why i thought it was the hilton, which otherwise doesn't appear in the picture, unless its obscured by the Terminal Tower.

  • Author

Or it's a pre-2015 picture.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

It's supposed to be the hilton, sorry i screwed that up, but i just wanted to depict it since i couldnt find any good skyline photos facing north. This photo was taken pre-hilton, so i made it between key and terminal. Misplacement is a no biggie. Would love to see something new on Jacob's block. whether it be the original plans for Ameritrust or not, i just want something there.

Also, BelievelandD1 i included the new CSU private dorms, I believe they're called 'Edge'... I'm not really sure, despite going to classes there every day.

Also Hello everybody and thank you for the warm welcome... Sorry about my name, its been that way since the dawn of time...

This is news from Aug. 27 and was updated today by Crain's. This represents 75 new jobs. The Cuyahoga Valley Industrial Center is just off Interstate 77 that was cleaned and leveled by the city. Also, Ohio High Reach is expanding and relocating to this site from Valley View, taking 12 acres..

Cleveland is trying to land Canada's Nova Tube and Steel

City Council is taking up legislation that would offer Nova Tube and Steel LLC, a subsidiary of Canadian steel processor and distributor Nova Steel, a 10-year, 60% tax abatement to develop a tube mill manufacturing facility on land now owned by a public-private development corporation in the Cuyahoga Valley Industrial Center.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Great news for our industry! Just today driving home on 77, they were laying down the roof for their new facilities. Also great news that foreign markets are gaining traction in Cleveland. Hopefully Nova Tube can pull this off.

Cleveland could be considered home to a new Amazon HQ. As of their rapid growth within Seattle, they are finally considering means of expansion elsewhere;  however, the major complex in the air has many requirements that cities must fulfill to even be considered for a bid, such as land requirement;  which for a massive facility like Amazon would be tricky, there are airport, highway, population, entertainment, and workforce related requirements as well.

The full list of requirements is right here.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/Anything/test/images/usa/RFP_3._V516043504_.pdf

Although it seems too good to be true, there are other cities who are up for bid, such as Dayton, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Austin, Baltimore, Denver, Provo, Raleigh, Tampa, Cincinnati, Washington, Kansas City, even Toronto. Some sources even say Columbus is on the chase. This isn't your ordinary bid. This is an all out bidding war which would be interesting to watch.

All bets aside, we need to submit an application sometime in October for the bid, but that would prove to be challenging as the Mayor is up for re-election. Assuming Mayor Frank Jackson stays within office, I think we have a pretty good chance to even have a finger on the bid.

Tastybunns, there's been some more discussion of the possibility of Amazon coming to Cleveland in this thread: https://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,15104.msg873354/topicseen.html

I thought this should be some good news. Considering the population of 'JUST' Downtown Cleveland. http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/cleveland/downtown-cleveland-sets-a-residency-record/475003722

*Also featuring the crane of 515 Euclid*

This is great news...15K is awesome.  But how do we get to 20K?  A lot more construction needs to be done if you figure an average of 2 people per apartment. (which is probably high)  we need at least 2500 more apartments or condos downtown

^we have a good start between the Playhouse square tower, Beacon, the Garfield is just opening and has the Leader building opened yet, as well as the other project across from the Justice Center?

That's between 700 and 900 units there right?

^^ It seems potentially doable. By 2020 we could have 319 apartments in the playhouse square tower, 120 in the Halle Building, 177 in the Cleveland Athletic Club, 140 in the john hartness brown building, 600 in the union trust building, 187 in Beacon, 123 in the Garfield building, 230 in the leader building, 98 in worthington yards, 300 in terminal tower, 287 at the standard building, 80 at and next to liberty textile, 12 in the bloch building, and 16 in harbor verandas. That's over 2,689 and doesn't include the potential developments north of the brown's stadium (500), Nucleus (500), Weston's superblock (1200), and the may company building (280).

^ let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.  Let's just reflect on what we have and where we are. There has been some sign of the rental market softening on the coasts so that's something to keep an eye on.  The country as a whole is also overdue for a recession too.

^^ I don't think that's getting too far ahead of ourselves at all. The projects in my first sentence totaling over 2,600 apartments seem to be moving along and it doesn't seem unlikely that many of them will be completed by 2020. The projects in my second sentence are more dubious but if even one of them goes forward it should be enough to make up for an inevitable shortfall or two in the other category.

Plus the stated goal of the DCA is 20K by 2020.  What are the actual boundaries used when they get these population figures?

I believe that DCA uses the city's boundaries Cuyahoga River, Lake Erie and Innerbelt.  They might also include Stonebridge in their numbers too.

So how far east? Is CSU considered DT?

East and south to the innerbelt.  CSU is considered Downtown.
