When I interviewed Stark a little more than a year ago, he bristled at the suggestions made by others like Steve Litt that having only one architect is a bad thing. He referred to uniform building heights and sizes in many European cities (or at least sections of those cities). I don't know if his stance has changed, but I think it's important to note that Stark isn't going to build all of Pesht. He wants other developers to be involved in it, but follow his design principals, proposed street grid and so on.

And when I covered Westlake during the time Stark was proposing Crocker Park, he also emphasized that he would have better design qualities, high-quality materials and funky streetscape features. He believes he has accomplished those things at Crocker Park.

Whether he has or not is, of course, a subject of debate.

I prefer Eton to Crocker Park. While both places are rather Disneylandish, at least Eton is better-looking than anything else on that street, especially the other strip malls.

eton: a strip mall is still a strip mall. Even if you put some pretty make-up on it.

^^Am I wrong in thinking that Eton is a strip mall?  I hate Crocker Park, but Stark did do a good job in designing it.

Well, there are some hideous-ass strip malls in every city in Northeast Ohio, so I'm not complaining when they fix 'em up and keep them full.

Eton is a fancy strip mall, but like Pope said...

The marketing for Eton really depresses me...no-one who hangs out a strip mall can ever be described as the "beautiful people."

^Have you been to Eton?  The people who hang out there seem to think they are...

DWR makes me laugh being at Eton- talk about losing your design bona fides. Their emails annoy the hell out of me too- the epitome of coastal parochialism.  And I have not forgiven Details for abandoning the Square, though I do like that it's not a chain.

I shopped at Eton for the first time in late Dec. for last minute X-mas shopping (please Stark, give me an option downtown soon!) and had to snap a few photos I was so overwhelmed with the cheese of it all.  I was surprised how un-crowded it was right before X-mas.  And I agree with you: the population there reinforced my general goal of staying strictly west of Warrensville Center road when in the Clevo area.

I've seen True Religion, Rock & Rep., G Star & Marc/Marc Jacobs items are sold there, but they don't seem to have a great deal of variety of products or sizes.  Based on that, I don't find it a store that I can recommend.

every time i stroll in there it seems that 70% of their men's merchandise is four cuts of sevens. Other than that, you're lucky if you can find anything worthwhile. I second your, "not recommended".

Speaking of recommended, where the hell can a guy finds some sewn's or pdc's? I'm getting sick of going to detroit every time i need jeans.

and on top of that everything seems to be for some who has a size 29 waist.  Guys like MayDay can clean up in there...if they happen to be shopping, when items are first put out on the floor.

Good jeans at Saks or Nordstrom at Beachwood?  once yo ufind a good brand you can always order over the internet for future purchases.

As much as I'd love to be able to squeeze my cracker curves into a 29 waist, it ain't gonna happen - not without serious injury.

I know they aren't "premium" denim but I have always had good luck with Mavi and heaven forbid, DKNY.

MayDay, seriously, I have a hard time believing you can't fit into a 29.  You can't be any bigger than a 30" waist - max.  You look so tiny in a good way.

Driving around Downtown Cleveland the other day, I notice several buildings on sale that caught my eye.  I don’t know if anyone knows anything about them:

The Muller Building, I have some information on it, being that the owners went under, that’s about it. So what are they going to do with the building now?

1224 Huron Rd.  I know this one is for sale, and it’s a nice building, I just don’t know anything else about It.  What’s the condition of the building, the price it going for, and if it is really worth putting money into it.

and on top of that everything seems to be for some who has a size 29 waist.  Guys like MayDay can clean up in there...if they happen to be shopping, when items are first put out on the floor.

I promise not too get too off topic, as I too would like an update on the Mueller Building, but where are you guys finding all of these 29 in. waisted pants? My primary frustration in shopping for men's clothes in Northeast Ohio is that many stores only seem to stock items in the "medium and above" category. I'm usually relegated to finding jeans at stores that cater to the tween crowd, like American Eagle. I just broke my "inside the inner ring" rule to take a look at Filene's, for instance ... only to find that pants were 32 and above (with most in the 34-36 range) and shirts started at M (with most at L). And this is not an isolated incident for me; the only place I seem to have consistent luck in finding clothes that fit is the vintage wares of Flower Child! So if you know of good clothing shops for slight men (preferably inside the inner ring), PM me.

1224 Huron- Is that the building that someone was trying to convert into condos a couple of years ago?  I spoke to them once, and they seemed nice and intelligent, but they weren't developers, and they got hung up on something or another and decided to sell.  I don't know if a pro would be able to make it work or not.  The current facade is actually a replacement, with the original historic facade having been removed.  I don't have the foggiest what it is like inside.  You should probably call the people or their rep for info if you are interested.

The Muller Building, I have some information on it, being that the owners went under, that’s about it. So what are they going to do with the building now?

Where is the Muller building?  What is the current use?

However he added, "One of our shortcomings, compared to other cities, is our downtown area." He said other communities such as Brecksville, Chardon, Chagrin Falls and Westlake have strong downtown areas compared to Independence.

Uh, OK. While Brecksville does have a town center, I wouldn't call it a downtown. Not exactly pedestrian friendly or dense enough to qualify. Westlake doesn't have a town center or a downtown. It does have a faux town, created in the spirit of Disney, set off to the side of the existing street pattern. It's hardly integrated with its surroundings and existing streets as the true small town downtowns of Chagrin Falls and Chardon are. But then, the average American (or certainly Greater Clevelander) probably wouldn't know the difference between a Crocker Park and Chagrin Falls or Chardon -- except maybe that Crocker Park is newer! Some might detect a difference, but couldn't tell you why.

chagrin falls has yours truly, that's the only difference.

Well put KJP.  Agree with everything you noted.

And Chagrin Falls is a great place to take a date! I always play the Chagrin Falls card when I'm going out with a girl not from the area or who has never been there. ;)

did you know that most residents of chagrin falls secretly despise you, and call you a "cone-licker"

As does shaker square.

^ As does Medina....

Oh well, I'm lactose intolerant anyway.

Can anyone offer better analysis of this topic from the PD about the port chairman who they say has a "conflict of interest," and how this will impact what's going on downtown?

http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/1169373577266510.xml&coll=2&thispage=1

They put a headline like this on the story:

Port chairman faces questions of conflict

Critics say Carney has stake in projects' fate

And then you read the quotes they got, and it sounds like the "critics" are more the newspaper than the usual suspects they talked with.

edit: I mean, clearly there appears there could be a conflict of interest. Maybe I'm so gung-ho about this that I don't care. A little corruption got some big things done, ya know?

You're right that the PD kept referring to "observers" who had concerns about Carney and a potential conflict of interest. The only one who seemed to have an "issue" with Carney's vote was Commissioner Dimora. Even then, his quote was something like "I wouldn't have voted on that." That ranks right up there with "I wouldn't have chosen the vinegarette."

You should know better than that, jamiec.

WELL! Yeah, you're right...

I suppose I'm frustrated by this PD article and how they phrase certain developments, like moving the port. If they are going to start throwing around complaints before anything happens, could they at least find real critics?

I noticed in particular the moving of the port, which they described as this:

"But port watchers question whether Carney should be publicly supporting Stark's plan, not just because of their Crocker Park relationship or Carney's downtown property. Observers note that the plan would ultimately require the port to move, costing taxpayers tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars."

Are they going to start whining about moving the port whenever it happens? And who are "port watchers?"

This town is small enough that it would be difficult to assemble a port board that had no stake in any downtown development. None of this seems like a big deal to me. I just hope it doesn't somehow affect the eminent domain process in the East Bank. Like that existing property owners could challenge the port -- and scuttle E.D. -- by questioning Carney's interest in voting for the process to begin.

Glad to see that others on this board had the same reaction this article that I did.  I was this close to sending e mails to the PD to tell them what a bs article it was (still might).  The headline refers to "critics" and the article mentions "observers" (what sort of bs journalism is that) without mentioning any names.  The people they quote (who don't have any interest in the eminent domain lawsuit) were probably contacted for the article so if they are critical (and the alledged criticism was really muted in my opinion) is was just because they were solicited not because there is a ground swell.  Is the PD reporting news or creating news.  If you read the FRONT PAGE headline you would have thought the public was massing at the Port Authority headquarters throwing rocks.

email.  If you say nothing, then nothing will happen.

The PD is in LARGE, why Cleveland has image problems.  Locally and Nationally.

That place needs to be shut down FAST and the Cleveland Press needs to be resurrected.

^^ don't nap on Berea, which has a really nice little, walkable downtown and combines a classic old, rural-type college town cheek-to-jowl with a modern burb close-in to a major city... To me, it's one of the best West Side burbs.

I think the port watcher they're referring to is Ed Hauser (if so, why not name him?). Citizen Hauser does the right thing by watching port officials like a hawk, but he often assumes the worst and then asks port officials to defend themselves. They often won't play his game, so he assumes they're hiding something. As unelected officials in charge of a large amount of taxpayer dollars, they do deserve close scrutiny, however.

My concern is that too much criticism and not enough encouragement breeds a seige mentality at public agencies (see RTA, NOACA, ODOT, etc). And a seige mentality is a sure way to stifle innovation.
