I, unfortunately, live in Miami and the money flowing in is from around the world but especially Latin and South America. They like coming to a place that the majority speak Spanish (Cleveland definitely does not have that outside of two or three specific areas). I’m glad we don’t have a bunch of empty towers. I would rather our buildings be occupied and add to the city as opposed to just being yet another 400-600’ building with nobody in it more than two weeks out of the year to clean money. Our growth is organic.

Banking.  Miami is the no, 1 banking region for Central and South American Banks in the US.  Also, the South American Winter is our Summer.  Making Miami a perfect destination.  That is why so many condo's are owned by foreign investors.  My Aunt & Uncle own a home in SE Florida and none of the neighbors are full time and all are Brazilian, Argentinian, Colombian, Panamanian and Costa Rican.

 

My mother had family members move in after the hurricane. There was nobody there during the winter, the boom right after Easter, they saw neighbors coming steadily.

When I went back a few years later, they were all completed due to an influx of Peruvian and other Latin American money. 

 

I’m not necessarily saying I wish we were Miami (there’s a reason I moved back), nor am I saying I wish we had a bunch of ghost investors (although I don’t believe the majority of the Turkish/Israeli/Ukrainian investors KJP alludes to are moving here in droves), nor am I saying we need to all speak Spanish (however it sure wouldn’t hurt for us to be more multilingual up here)... I’m simply wondering why we seem to target investors from EMEA and APAC and exclude our neighbors down south. As MTS states, it’s summer here during their winter—a beautiful place to build a nest!

 

Bringing this full circle (and hopefully semi back on topic), I had the honor of meeting today with a group of individuals from across four continents who were visiting at the invitation of the Cleveland Council of World Affairs. They seemed to adore Cleveland thus far—and interestingly enough, seemed to show an overwhelmingly positive effect of having visited during the All Star Game decor. So hopefully it does help make a great impression and they share their positive experience with developers/investors in their home countries.

 

...and then we can talk about those future projects right here on the random dev thread. ?

There was an article on Cleveland.com regarding this quite some time ago. At the time they were going to make some exterior changes as well. I wonder if that is still the case or if this is all internal.

Those units are huge and have good views.  It was only a matter of time before a renovation.  They had to do this in order to compete with the newer units built downtown.

This is probably county-based, so a move from Solon to Twinsburg counts as a Cleveland to Akron move

Walked down to the Play Ball Park at lunch (around 12:30 for crowd context), gave me butterflies to see the greenspace so well utilized- kids throwing baseballs, batting practice, band stand, all that jazz.

 

I also wandered around Tower City/The Avenue, that area cant be converted fast enough...kind of felt embarrassed for how barren it is and how that must come off for a first impression. 

 

Lastly, there's volunteers everywhere (not just down by the Convention Center - E 4th., Public Square, E. 9th, etc.) answering questions and providing wayfinding. Absolutely awesome call on whoever set that up!!

We took the kids there today.  Unfortunately, they shut down the outdoor activities for the rest of the day 5 minutes after we showed up due to nearby lightning.  They also drastically lowered the price of tickets about an hour after I purchased them.  It was still a good time, though, and it was cool to see so much activity on the malls.  It was also the first time I had been inside of the convention center.  It is very clean and nice in there, although it doesn't feel quite as expansive as I expected.

That's a bummer! I checked the news and see they shut it down, makes sense I guess after parma got the deluge...coulda been downtown. And from the video I've see of inside it looks like theyve built a lot of stuff in the main hall, if you see it when no event (or a smaller event) is going on the massive space is obvious (granted nothing like CBUS, or sprawling centers of other cities).

 

We do our symposium down there every year in the second part, and it really is an amazing facility. Nothing like lake views, the factory of sadness, and a small farm to look out on haha...they did a great job. Even the medical mart is sweet (and attractive) even if it's been a boondoggle. 

I spent all day there, from the Convention Center to on top of the malls....did the Zip Line (worth the price,so COOL!)  and stayed for the concerts and fireworks...Downtown was phenomenal yesterday!!! Well done CLE

Wife and I took the kids, because of the heat we pretty much spent the whole day inside the convention center doing the interactive stuff and seeing the sights; really well done, lots of activities for fans of all ages, not overly crowded, easy to get around. It was a great experience!

The Killers concert was simply amazing. They've been consistently amazing since I went one of their concerts for the first time in high school. It is really nice to see Cleveland hosting such large events as the MLB All Star Games, and I hope that they continue to do so. The Public Mall space is perfect for these types of events.

and yeah, I get they had to stretch it for a couple hours, but that was kind of weird as far as parades are concerned

I just happened to be at the junction of Euclid and 9th. Stood for about 5mins and saw two players go by. Then got bored and left! I love baseball, but not that much that I want to stand there for 2 hours to see a slow trickle of players with their trophy wives drive by. 

What parade is this? No participants and no spectators, lol.

When I told my old friends / acquaintances in D.C. I was moving back to Cleveland, many of them asked me why.  It wasn't disparaging, but it got pretty annoying.  I bet if I said I was moving to a "trendy" city like New York or Denver or Austin, they wouldn't have asked the question.  One day I hope that no one would ask because they'd already know that Cleveland's a great place.

@Terdolph I like your list. After reading the linked list, I like that one better. All of these things (yours and Freshwaters, both editions 1 and 2) projects worth pursuing.

Also, I would like to see the top ground level floor of the Huntington Park Garage behind the County courthouse as well as the Willard Park Garage behind city Hall be converted into a park so that it connects Willard Park and Fort Huntington Park with the Mall, creating a kind of wrap around deck or T shaped park.  It would enhance the beauty of the  two historic buildings from various point of view. i think 3rd street between the old library and the Metzenbaum Couthouse should be converted into a green space as well. That street is very little used and it would perhaps steer some people away  that misaligned and awkward corner between Public square and the Mall.

Where in Canada do you propose the ferry go? Directly across the lake from Cleveland is just farm land.

This makes more sense than Canada, but it's over 40 miles each way compared to just 9 mi Port Clinton to Put in Bay. Even topped out at jet express' top speed it would take over an hour each way once everyone is loaded up onto the boats. Realistically probably closer to an hour and a half or two hours. Costs would be at least double so figure ~$70 round trip per adult. At those costs it makes more sense to rent a car for the day and drive yourself over to Port Clinton than to take a ferry direct from downtown.

You would have to make the Cedar Point/Islands ferry a part of the day trip experience- food/drinks, sightseeing, entertainment, etc.  Something like this is already being launched out of Lorain, not sure why it couldn't work out of Cleveland.

I thought your idea of a park behind Lakeside Court House and City Hall connecting W3 to E9 was interesting. But please don't advocate closing more city streets. We've lost WAY too many streets to private interests in the last few decades. E. 3 is a critical link. If you're on Rockwell and want to go to Superior, without E3 you have to go all through Public Square adding more congestion to Public Square or other streets, more safety hazards, and certainly more carbon emissions. E. 3 is part of the street grid. it does no harm and provides a meaningful public purpose. There's absolutely no reason to close it. There already is open space on THREE SIDES of it--Mall A, Eastman Reading Garden, and Public Square.

Re Canada, I'm a long supporter of the idea. It has a long history----Port Stanley local folks didn't want all those trucks on their streets, and then Canada federalized the port so it was no longer a local issue but a Canadian one. Then a second port was mentioned (Port Burwell maybe?). There were some customs processing issues then raised, but now, with the latest customs agreements between the US and Canada (unless Trump killed them) those issues are no longer relevant, meaning a ferry could work if the Canadians can just pick a port and stick with it.  There was even an operator selected for the service a while ago, a Dutch company, Royal Wagenborg . 

^^On that theme, and I have no evidence for this whatsoever, once the Lumen is up and running I’d fully expect Playhouse Square making a run at pedestrianizing E14th and/ or E17th between Euclid and Prospect.

I just don't see this happening...East 14th is the main road into the area off of Highway.  And 17th will be the entrance and exit for the parking garage

Doh! Fair point about 17th, I’d overlooked that. Not sure I’d discount E14th though. A lot of show traffic never makes it past the lots on or south of Prospect and for visitors and commuters heading to the north side of PHS for parking or work, using E17/ 18th isn’t a big deal. 

I have a strong feeling that PHS are going to want an outdoor space to do things with and increase the walkability and retain foot traffic. Star Plaza doesn’t cut it.

This is the best transformative idea in awhile! And a fairly easy one to make happen. Strip off the top couple floors so you can slope it down towards the lake. Expand the garages over the tracks to make up for lost spaces while continuing the sloped green roof down. Tie it all together in the middle. Love it!!

I love this idea, and I would love to see it, but it would probably never happen unfortunately, unless it were HEAVILY subsidized. It would be insanely expensive for the Jet Express (or a similar ferry) to run from Cleveland to CP or the Islands, and the price point would be way too high for people to justify spending that long on the boat. Lorain tried doing this, but the service didn't last long because the cost was so high and ridership was so low.

I personally would love to see the return of intercity service as in Scandinavia.   Overnight ferry from Cleveland to Toronto via the Welland.   Wake up ready for business--with your car if needed!

A ferry all the way to Toronto is an interesting idea, but it would take a long time to get there--probably 8 hours at least. The concept behind just crossing the lake  to Port Stnaley was supposed to save drive time from CLE to Toronto and carbon emissions from all those trucks.

I biked the lake about five years ago, and there are some gems of towns and great people. Port Stanley was a favorite of mine just a picturesque port town (sorry about the ipod quality photo), and there's a few other neat ports throughout. Fun fact, a lot of Long Point is privately owned. I know this is a Cleveland development thread, but if anyone's bored, here's a link to my blog from the trip (mostly for photos of the places/towns).

 

My reminiscing aside, I'd bet these towns would love a tourist infusion, but I'd be wary they'd lose their charm with a ferry. I agree with you- if you can beat out traffic/travel time to major cities it could be a neat idea (heck, it'd be cool to just go to Erie via ferry!). I believe Rochester, NY had a ferry between there and Toronto and it failed after a few years, and that was much closer for reference.

i like your idea of extending the garage as part of the land bridge!
