Why demolish Chagrin Falls' paper mill? If they want an artists district, reuse these neat historic buildings. I see from other articles that no buyers emerged for the buildings. Perhaps the village could have assisted with repackaging the property (new zoning, creating an historic district, offering historic tax credits, etc) for sale for a new lease on life?

An update on the Terminal Tower renovation - looks like there's some sort of protective covering for the cone portion beneath the cupola:

I get a queasy, fear-of-heights feeling in my stomach just when I imagine someone working up there, outside the top of the Cleveland Union Terminal Tower. More power to those guys.

I guess they probably feel like they'd die from a 75 feet fall, so another 633 feet doesn't really make a difference.  I beg to differ though...

I got to stand on the little platform right next to the red lights up there...it was pretty freakin scary....and windy!  I will try to find the pics I took up there...

Basically, it's part of a much improved 2020 Citywide Plan site and this particular page features links to other plans within the city, from Tyler Village to the Rocky River Drive Master Plan.  Very nice!  When I have more time, I'm going to go through the thing and check out the ones I'm not familiar with...

"Downtown" Planned In Solon

(Solon, OH) -- Solon city leaders are hoping to build a "downtown" district to attract new businesses and visitors. Their center-of-town proposal would be located at Bainbridge and SOM Center roads. Plans call for a new firehouse, parks and a bandstand. The renovated and expanded fire station is the first priority, with a 5-million-dollar upgrade on the drawing board. Supporters of the Solon downtown plan say it will attract upscale shops and restaurants that attract people to neighboring cities.

But some haven't latched onto the idea of a historic village or town square. Councilman Robert Pelunis wants to focus on city services.

 

"All these other amenities are not necessary at this point," said Pelunis. "They're not going to help economic development. It's not going to be Chagrin Falls. It's not going to be Hudson. We have to face that fact."

 

Gee, I thought human beings designed cities, not happenstance. And I thought quality of life, including attractive surroundings, positively influences economic development. But I guess he missed that chapter in his urban studies class(es).

A few items on the agenda for tomorrow's Design Review at City Hall:

 

Ordinance No. 1882-06 (Pierce Scott/Ward 8 ): Authorizing the Director of Community Development to enter into a development agreement with J. Christopher Enterprises, Inc., or its designee, for the redevelopment of 2065 Scranton Road into residential condominium units, green space, and parking.

 

Ordinance No. 1883-06 (Cimperman/Ward 13): Authorizing the Director of Community Development to enter into a development agreement with Howells and Howells Enterprises, LLC, or its designee, for the redevelopment of the Park Building, located at 140 Public Square and 2000 Ontario Street.

 

DRC 06-154: 140 Public Square, Park Building/Southworth Building Project, Penthouse Addition, etc. (HGN/Ward 13)

 

Resolution No. 1894-06: Supporting 3M Realty, LLC/3M Development, LLC/First Midwest Properties, LLC or it development affiliate’s [these are the guys who bought the buildings on the north side of Euclid, east of 9th Street] Brownfield Redevelopment Fund grant application to the County of Cuyahoga.

 

Ordinance No. 1857-06 (Cimperman/Ward 13): Authorizing the Director of Public Service to issue a permit to Zaremba Avenue LLC to encroach into the public right-of-way of St. Clair Avenue, East 12 th Street and Hamilton Avenue by installing, using, and maintaining the building foundation system for a parking garage and residential building and maintaining trench sheeting for the structures.

I saw that Scranton Rd thing. I mapped it out and it appears to be in the Flats in the same area where Ferchill was going to put his condos. Is it the same thing?

I know for a fact that the Cleveland Trust Tower is receiving (or will receive) brownfield redevelopment funds precisely for asbestos removal. The funds come from the State, but the developers have to ask the city to represent them in their request for funding.

Cimperman is on the Planning Commission, but not on the Design review. That's probably why he said that. I may be repeating something that you already know, but the the CPC pretty much accepts whatever the DR board recommends. Not always, though. If you present to DR on Thursday and they like it, you usually go on to CPC on Friday (correct me where I'm wrong).

Cuyahoga County land records show that J. Christopher Enterprises Inc., a corporate name Mr. Ferchill often uses, on Oct. 13 paid Fifth Third Bank $2.6 million for the marina and its six acres of riverfront property.

My guess is that the grey below the cupola is some sort of primer, or that it's not the final color. (At least I hope it isn't!)

Which article are you responding to? The one about John Carroll's expansion?

If that's the reference, then I'd think that more people walk down So. Belvoir than Warrensville.  And it's more like a 20 minute (3/4 mile) walk, if you're booking it, to the Green Line that way.  Unfortunately, what used to be very frequent (and convenient) bus service to this end of University Heights has been drastically cut back over the past 10 years.  My old line on Fairmount Blvd. doesn't run past 6 pm any more and I believe they may have cut the Washington Blvd. line altogether.  Maybe a circulator route would serve the JCU student population best.  Something to get them over to Beachwood Place or Coventry or Lee Road or Cedar Center...

i thought their plans were to redevelop, NOT resell.  maybe they couldn't get financing or just lost interest.  there has been a noticeable difference in the quality of the storefronts on those buildings (fixing broken tiles, regularly cleaning windows, etc.) - even though 2/3 are empty.

Didn't they just apply for brownfield cleanup funds for this building? Maybe the condo project is being scaled back to just 2 buildings.

I'm out of the loop these days.  This came as a surprise to me, though.

^Actually Dave Perkowski did the projects you mentioned.  This is his brother Doug (they no longer work together), who did Federal Knitting Mills and the Condo project on W 3rd in the Warehouse District.

Right!  Aren't they twins or something?  Either way, go Perkowski!  And either one can take over Mueller, as far as I'm concerned...

 

Dave has more projects in the works on Superior and in North Broadway, so we'll have to keep an eye/ear out for those as well!

They need a new school, but it will never happen.  The school was built for maybe a 1,000 students.  When I started working there 5 years ago, there were 1,100 kids at the school, this year we started at 1,850 and projected to be over 2,000 by 2010...and NR also has arguably the worst city services of any town in NE Ohio, except for the schools...

Work is being done on the upper floors of the old Ohio Bell Building on Bolivar next to Cooperstown. The first floor is currently parking, so maybe the upper floors will be parking too.

I'm hoping for loft condos, I don't really see the demand for additional parking. The Peterson Nut site surface lots and 515 Euclid added plenty of parking to the area.
