I found your note about terminating the high speed line at Hopkins, and using the existing red line into Downtown very interesting. I existing partnerships between Edens and Haslam you mentioned are a reason for Jimmy maybe getting the big Cleveland station vs elsewhere Downtown.

Either way, a stop would be a massive boost for the type of flights Hopkins could attract, as the only airport in the state and region with local and intercity train service, along with 2 higher speed lines. I would think we'd land more direct international destinations, as now the customer base could potentially spread as far as the Detroit and Cincy metro areas.

That could also maybe encourage that dream of automating the red line with better frequency, then shifting those drivers to a streetcar route or 2. Maybe even a Lakewood rapid line....

It'd be pretty crazy for people from Columbus and Toledo to potentially get from home to their seat the stadium faster than someone from nearby counties like Ashtabula, Stark, Geauga, and parks of Lake and Summit who would have to deal with all of the traffic, parking lots, and 1 mile walk from their $60+ parking spot.

Given Brighline's model of developing real estate to support its rail lines it would be a little disappointing if they terminated their line at Hopkins instead of extending to downtown. Though, assuming their station would either be on the lake front or Union Terminal, it seems they wouldn't have the same development opportunities.

Do we know the extent to which Brightline would share infrastructure with Amtrak? Would Brightline lease stations and rail right-of-ways to Amtrak to use (and vise versa to the extent that Amtrak owns lines outside of the northeast)?

Less concerned about duplication of the infrastructure and more thinking that if Amtrak can piggyback on Brightline it may reduce their startup costs in Ohio maybe making supporting Amtrak expansion in the state more palatable to state legislators.

IF Brightline is actually serious about this, I would love to see the 3C+D line turned into more of a low budget line with more stops. Sort of like how there are faster direct routes and then slower routes hitting more cities all across Europe.

Have at least 1 stop in every county the line goes through. Add stops in places like Worthington and other mid sized suburbs or job centers near the bigger cities.

If Amtrak and Brightline can partner up to improve/build track, the budget line with more stops could still take about as long as the current 3C+D line since it can now hit higher speeds.

Potentially interesting news, Dan Whalen (the lead on the Intro project) is leaving Harbor Bay to go independent. Hopefully he continues to focus on Cleveland.  He posted on LinedIn a couple days ago:

A lot of projects across the city getting funding from the Ohio Senate's half of the budget surplus

Lawmakers are now looking to give more than $140 million to Northeast Ohio projects. Here’s who stands to get a share

By Jeremy Pelzer, cleveland.com

Jun. 10, 2024

The Senate’s plan, announced Monday, would give a total of more than $76 million in one-time funds to projects in Cuyahoga County and five neighboring counties as part of this year’s state capital budget, which lawmakers hope to pass before the end of the month.

...

The Senate’s proposed funding plan also would provide $8 million to help a $3.5 billion proposal to build 3.5 million square feet of offices, apartments, retail, and entertainment spaces between Tower City Center’s unfinished western edge and the Cuyahoga River. The project, put forward by Bedrock, the Detroit-based real estate company headed by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, would include the construction of one of the world’s largest athletic training and wellness facilities.

...

The Senate is also seeking to provide nearly $40 million for about 40 projects in Cuyahoga County, including:

• $5 million to assist Cleveland’s port modernize its bulk terminal

• $2 million for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum (on top of $5 million the House has already proposed to give the institution)

• $2 million to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to help build a new indoor “primate forest”

• $1.8 million to aid a British company called Blue Abyss in building a $250 million astronaut training center in Brook Park

• $1 million each to Cleveland’s West Side Market and Irishtown Bend Park, Cahoon Park in Bay Village, and Doan Brook Park in Shaker Heights. Including the House’s proposal, that would mean $2.4 million in total for West Side Market and $2 million each for Irishtown Bend Park and Cahoon Park.

Cuyahoga County would get about $83 million total in one-time funding, when the House’s list of projects is included.

No really good home for this (Historic Photos? Det-Sup Bridge in Bike/Ped?, Greenscapes, etc. etc.), but this StoryMap goes through the History of the Detroit Superior Bridge. Really cool project to work on and I could only incorporate a handful of photos that I came across...

I have a photo from the construction and the opening ceremony of the promenade (Mayor Jane Campbell and former Shaker Heights Mayor Judy Rawson walking in front of the group), if you can use them. At one point I had a piece of the ribbon cutting from the opening ceremony but lost it in a move.

Somewhat related, I've been going through my archives in preparation for donating my collection to a local institution. Which brought me to thinking of compiling a thread for the "back in the day" projects (2000s-2010s). In some cases, links to my photos were broken with forum upgrades, etc. but I have plenty to share if there'd be any interest.

Cleveland, NE Ohio projects win historic tax credits

By Ken Prendergast / June 26, 2024

From Downtown Cleveland to the suburbs to outlying cities in Northeast Ohio, nearly a dozen planned redevelopments of aging buildings were blessed with historic tax credits from the state. They were among 35 awards totaling more than $68 million to preserve dozens of historic buildings in 12 communities across Ohio.

^ Very exciting news here. Glad to see the George project in the Flats moving forward as it extends the activity along the river. These tax credits are such an important element for not only preserving older and obsolete structures but at the same time they can be the difference between something getting done and nothing getting done. Seeing all the positive results around the state you'd thing the government would be encouraged to up the dollar amount available.

Ohio Capital Budget’s Cuyahoga County projects
By Ken Prendergast / June 27, 2024

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said he is eager to sign the largest capital budget in the state’s history. This $4.2 billion goody bag of Senators’ and Representatives’ gifts to their constituents was passed yesterday, resulting from a strong economy and robust tax revenues that fed a record budget surplus. In that goody bag are things ranging in size from $2,250 for the Solon Innovation Center to $20 million for Downtown Cleveland’s North Coast Connector land bridge.

👀 1 mil for greyhound transformational project

I love how renderings always show so much greenery.  And it certainly won't look like that from November-April.

Is that eastern leg of the "land bridge" really necessary?

When you really look at this rendering, maybe Brook Park wouldn't be too bad. MY GOODNESS the stadium takes up a lot of space.

Hot damn! That's a lot of support for a lot of projects. Almost makes me want to re-visit my very negative opinion of state government...then again, if l start with gerrymandering and move to the HB-6/First Energy/PUCO boondoggle that's enough right there. So nevermind. Still don't look favorably upon our state government.

@KJP Really great and thorough reporting. You must have spent a good while reading through that appropriations bill.

Do you have the total on special projects funding in Cuyahoga County? It's gotta be close to $100 million, no? Has any previous state budget given this area a remotely similar amount of money? Seems like a very generous handout.

Dunno if this has been covered anywhere but Council yesterday voted to create both a Division of Parks and Recreation and Division of Forestry, separate from Public Works, tasked with maintaining city parks/public spaces and treescape/tree canopy respectively. Seems like a big deal given we're always talking about park maintenance and trees in this forum. I for one am looking forward to seeing how this helps streamline and better serve the city!

Hopefully the "Division of Forestry" can work with the power companies in this city so they stop hacking up the trees near powerlines whenever they do work. They continuously butcher trees when they're working near them making them look terrible, and in many cases usually lead to the tree to dying.

Any details on this ongoing rehab? I work around the corner and have been walking by on my lunch breaks. Looks like they were doing some pressure washing yesterday.

If I recall correctly, this is a Kassouff project so we should just be glad it is actually getting done.  It seems like it took half my lifetime from announcement to finally starting.

West Sixth

I think at one point there were also grand plans for the parking lot adjacent to the building but the project was scaled back or it has been regulated to a Phase 2.  You know, long after I'm dead.

Phase 2 usually means forget about it.

Unfortunately this is just a cosmetic, exterior rehab. From what I understand, no major improvements are planned by Kassouf inside. But if a tenant wants to pay for it, I'm sure Kassouf will be very interested.
