re: Euclid lakefront development article:

"We'll have a marina or a pier. Something will go in the water," Price said.

Cervenik said he is "confident that within two years, the city will raise the money to build a breakwall, an integral step in building a marina."

I am all for more marinas but Oh man, PLEASE, PLEASE NO MORE BREAKWALLS, THE COASTLINE IS RUINED ENOUGH BY THEM ALREADY.

In many areas of the U.S. they are desparately trying to REVERSE the practice of armoring the shore. Breakwalls destroy beaches, create dangerous currents, cause even more erosion and last but not least are just plain ugly.

^Agreed.  Strongly.^

...

Do you know something about 515 Euclid that we don't? Or did I completley miss something?

Yeah whats up with that rendering?

It'll be a nice gap filler between 200 Public Square and the 9th Street towers, that's for sure. I think it would actually be a little more to the right, partially blocking the view of Fifth Third Center. The elevator "stump" is on the parking deck's southeast corner, so the tower would be much closer to the National City/Garfield Building.

It would be easier if you would just post your own articles. I'm sure nobody would mind.

Construction is finally starting on something new in the former Hickerson's in the Hanna Building on the Euclid Avenue side.  At one time the rumor was that it would be a Molly Brannigan's, but their website (http://www.mollybrannigans.com/locations/maps.asp) still says that they will be "opening soon" at 1317 Euclid.  Anyone have any news on what is happening in the Hanna?

^Move it downtown and give it a skyscraper!

It'd be awfully hard to build rockets, supersonic windtunnels, 2.2 second drop towers and giagantic vacuum chambers in a skyscraper, but your heart is in the right place.

I wasn't sure if this was posted yet

If You Want To See Cranes Over Cleveland, Look To The Nonprofit Arts Sector

By Michael Gill

The CMA rotunda - Art will be installed starting this winter. If all you had to go by was the city's arts organizations, you'd never guess that Cleveland is an impoverished place. The cigarette tax shows one kind of support for the Northeast Ohio arts community, but a better expression comes from patrons' and foundations' support of capital campaigns paying for a wave of construction projects that has washed over the cultural landscape in the last few years...

Is there any experience out there with a range of current psf costs for new construction/replacement (minus land) of Class A and B office buildings in the Cleveland area.

On this week's Design Review Board Agenda:

DRC 07-102:1001 Huron Road, AIA Storefront Remodel w/ Encroachment (PLPD/Ward 13)

It should be interesting to see what the AIA comes up with.

Was this the design competition they had a year or so ago?

^ I'm up for that if anyone else is. Where can we get some sod?  :-)

^^Wow, that is awesome.

The AIA thing is from the competition.

anyone interested in doing this > http://gcbl.org/blog/marc-lefkowitz/reclaiming-some-asphalt < tomorrow???

I think the intentions are good, but why not just use some of the many greenspaces that already exist Downtown but are almost completely unused, except as homeless camps?

How great would it be if people picniced at Settler's Landing, played chess with strangers on Public Square, had pickup games of frisbee on the Mall, or had impromptu acoustic jam sessions at Voinovich Park?  What are the sparks that ignite that sort of social scene?  That is the Downtown Greenspace question that I would like answered.  Until those spaces begin to see some real use what is the purpose in reclaiming additional greenspace?

^Geez, captain buzzkill.  Don't you think fun little semi-political performance art pieces like this work a lot better when they're where people can see them?

Very good points.

^Geez, captain buzzkill.  Don't you think fun little semi-political performance art pieces like this work a lot better when they're where people can see them?

Yeah, as performance art it works better.  Are you just looking for a stage, or to start something that will change the social nature of Downtown?

edit- I don't think it's a bad idea.  I don't think it will hurt.  I just think that it is more a stylized mimicry of successful urban space than anything that will improve the substance of our urban space.

^I don't want to speak for the folks behind this, but I certainly interpreted this as performance art- that the visibility of the stunt was a big part of its fun.  And I think that can certainly play a part in changing the social and landuse nature of Downtown.

While it's definitely a comment on greenspace, I think it's more a comment on our overreliance on automobiles. Hopefully, this kind of visually alarming display causes at least a few people to stop and think about how different our city would be if a) as you mentioned, people started utilizing the underused greenspaces downtown and b) people chose to leave the automobiles at home and go without and regain the surface parking lots, streetside parking, etc. needed to support them.

That's an outstanding development. Once these buildings on Euclid get filled up, I would expect new construction such as 515 Euclid and/or the parking lot where the Hippodrome stood.

Cleveland leaders slow to embrace Apple center

Education center would train city students in digital media, but cost is a concern for officials Saturday, October 06, 2007

Shaheen Samavati Plain Dealer Reporter

Apple Inc. -- one of the hottest technology companies in the world -- wants to bring a flashy, high-tech education center to downtown Cleveland.

I really hope that Cleveland doesn't completely ignore or pass on this project without giving it a really hard look. It sounds exactly like something that the city could use .. an exciting chance to give young people an educational and creative outlet in a city that needs more high tech people.

I agree. Yes, it's a risk. And I'll say it until I'm blue in the face: risk and failure are essential parts of growth and success.
