October 7, 200717 yr Yes, it's a risk It won't happen, the money isn't there...They are 120 million short on completing their building updates and they truly need to focus the money they have on the students their now...Is it a great idea? Yes it is...BUT, unless some civic leaders stand up and find a way to get the money donated, it won't happen... All the public will see is a district with a failing report card that is over-budget on everything that is building a multi-million dollars schools for a 100 students...More of the city is run by idiots argument that the burbs' make alllllll the time... For the record, I like the idea, education is about exposure to all types of ideas, not just the ones that have been done for a 100 years or in fancy text books...I would like them to reopen the flight school, I think that would be cheaper and a better use for the building other than a homeless shelter...
October 7, 200717 yr I say "do it". The "risk" today are minor when compared to the positive results, which will be on many levels, tomorrow. They system is not "failing" its on "continuous improvement" (also see KJPs relocation thread for greater details or the cms report card.) which are two different categories. Can anyone tell me if CMSD "building fund" is seperate from the general fund?
October 7, 200717 yr Is there a way that we can communicate directly with people in government? I guess writing letters to congresspeople and whatnot? I'm sick of venting in this group. I love this forum, but it's not getting anything DONE. Can anyone provide us with that information, even just for future reference? Even if I have to look it up on my own, where do I start? Also, what's going on with the whole PD rally thing?

Also, what's going on with the whole PD rally thing? Dude, you can look up your city, county, state, federal elected officials via their websites. That information isn't really that difficult to find.
October 7, 200717 yr Most government entities from the federal level to local/municipal have email addresses, phone numbers, and mailing addresses listed on their respective web sites. You might have a point though - it would be good to have a centralized list (which I thought MTS put together). Perhaps you can take on that project and we can find a spot for it on the forum. As far as this forum not getting anything done, I have to disagree. Before this forum came along, where would you go for all the information that's available here? Where would like-minded people go to share ideas and information? Where would someone seeking relocation information that's geared toward city living go for help? Where would you go to find out the status of construction projects? cleveland.com forums? Members of this forum have: - Assisted a number of people with relocation to Cleveland. - At each forum meet, generated hundreds of dollars of revenue for individual local businesses (notably Great Lakes Brewing). - Assisted local non-profits further develop a volunteer base. - Participated in Riversweep (cleanup of the Cuyahoga banks). - Enabled out-of-towners to be updated with events and info. - Routinely contacted members of the local media and government with concerns. - Recruited representatives of local groups such as RTA and the Downtown Cleveland Alliance to participate. - Recruited representatives of local development projects to participate. There's more, but I think you get the point. What I want to know is - what exactly should we be doing that we aren't? And I also have to ask - exactly what do you think this forum is capable of? Remember, no one here is getting paid for their efforts; no one is being funded to be a full-time advocate and it's not like we can pick up shovels and start digging up parking lots to move development along. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
October 7, 200717 yr I understand that. That wasn't what I meant when I said "nothing was getting done". The forum is great for providing information. But in terms of getting our voices heard OUTSIDE of the forum, it doesn't do anything, unless there are people in higher positions that are checking in to the forum. But only you would know that, really .. at least I sure wouldn't. I guess that I want to be able to voice our grievances outwardly, where our voices can actually be heard in places that can make a difference outside of the forum. What's wrong with that?

I am so sure there are plenty of "lurkers" esepecially from the plain dealer. Since urbanohio has expanded, the discusstion on their forums has all but dried up. I"m sure the city and the county are reading what we (say) write here.
October 7, 200717 yr That was pretty hilarious. :) Are people from government positions actually reading what we have to say? If so, then that's great! I wasn't aware of that, and if that is the case, then urbanohio's reach is greater than I thought. I stand corrected. But since I've become a member, it seems that the forum is by far primarily discussion-based, and I was simply suggesting that instead of venting our grievances here, maybe we can try and "take them to the streets" and maybe try to fight for what we want from time to time if our voices aren't actually being heard. We all want to see change in Cleveland (I think? Maybe not, I dunno). But change won't happen by us simply discussing our desire for things to change. There are things we need to actively pursue. It's simply my desire to do what I can to make sure our voices are heard, that's all. I just feel like not enough is being done, I guess.
October 7, 200717 yr Then my little pop-sicle what are you suggesting? Are you willing to lead the effort?
October 7, 200717 yr I would love to try and do what I can to make our voices heard, yes. I'm not sure how I'd go about doing it. Or even if it would work. But I would like to try. I mean, just thinking specifically about this whole Apple thing. It sounds like such a great opportunity, something that the city could really use right now. It sounds like forward thinking. I don't have all the details, so I don't know if it's a good plan or not. But I would love to let someone know that something like that project is something I would love to see happen, or at the very least, considered. Stuff like that. I want my voice to be heard, man! :)
October 7, 200717 yr Stuff like that. I want my voice to be heard, man! :) :speech: Step one: Move back to Cleveland! And tell two friends, and they'll tell two friends and so on..and so on.. and so on..
October 7, 200717 yr Every time I talk about Cleveland, I tell them how much I love it. I don't think I'll be moving back to Cleveland any time soon, though, unfortunately. :(
October 7, 200717 yr Every time I talk about Cleveland, I tell them how much I love it. I don't think I'll be moving back to Cleveland any time soon, though, unfortunately. :( why is that?
October 7, 200717 yr Three reasons: 1. I'm finishing up school at the moment. 2. The specific field of graphic design, motion graphics (for film and TV) isn't very plentiful in Cleveland. NYC is one of only a few centers for this field right now because so many entertainment and broadcast companies are located here. I guess that I'd be worried about job security, and not only job security, but also a job where people are creating design that I really love and am interested in. I haven't seen much of that in Cleveland for me personally, and maybe I need to research more because I have to believe that there is interesting design in Cleveland. And 3. I don't want to be located in an environment that is too conservative. I'd much rather be in a city that allows for much more progressive thinking, I guess. I can only do so much to change that, and I don't want to be the only one fighting for something that I want when thousands of other people don't want the same thing. I just feel like I don't fit in there anymore. Maybe one day I'll consider moving back to Cleveland. But not now.
October 7, 200717 yr kids, you want to talk about moving back to cleveland, and what to do with the forum, how about, not in this thread anymore?
October 8, 200717 yr With building plans in flux, county could sell key site By JAY MILLER 4:30 am, October 8, 2007 Cuyahoga County commissioners have pushed back the construction timeline for a planned county administration center and are saying they would consider selling the site in downtown Cleveland to someone who would erect a new office building that another large tenant could occupy...
October 8, 200717 yr Of course it makes sense, but I don't know if anyone wants the site. They should get the (Ameritrust Tower) building torn down and then decide what to do. :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x It's bad enough that we would demo a structurally sound, historically significant building for a new county admin center ... but to destroy it so that someone MIGHT eventually construct something on it, when there are plentiful empty lots and surface parking lots in relative proximity to this site is LUDICROUS. If we're speculating about who might buy the site and for what purpose, wouldn't it make more sense to leave the building intact, since, I don't know, someone might want to renovate it?! I say remove the asbestos and then leave it the eff alone!
October 8, 200717 yr It is just horribly hilarious that this situation has arisen, and who could really be surprised. Although this is a great way to waste an ass load of taxpayer money. How much is that this year, $10 million when you consider the juvenile detention center fiasco?
October 8, 200717 yr Given the discussions on various threads on this board, nothing in that article makes sense except the fact that it appears poor planning could put the county in a financial pickle (at least they caught it in time and will not go forward with the administration center to the detriment of sound finances). Sometimes I think Hagan just likes to hear himself talk. If I were e and y, baker, huntington, eaton or squires why would I go to that costly site when I have Wolstein, Jacobs and Stark courting me (and all are much futher along). Looks like Jacbos may have won again in unloading the property on the county.
October 8, 200717 yr The way I look at this is, someone else will build at the AT site, and the county would build on Starks site. I always thought the location of the Public Square site was much better for the county anyhow. The corner of E 9th and Euclid is the begining of the so called "financial district" It would be much more fitting for E and Y to be there anyhow.

October 8, 200717 yr Author If I were the county commissioners, I would sell the Ameritrust site for the $22 million figure quoted to one of the large firms seeking to move. I would hope a CEO at one of those firms finds the Ameritrust Tower worthy of preservation. I never liked the East 9th-Euclid corner for a county administration building anyway. If I was them, I'd move out of the current administration building on Lakeside to temporary quarters, demolish that building, and put up a new tower on that site. EDIT: I just realized -- why are we having this discussion in this thread? These should be moved to the county administration tower thread. October 11, 200717 yr A rendering of the Dollar Bank expansion at the Galleria - not exactly envelope-pushing but this will go a long way in lightening up that corner and opening up the views from inside the Galleria as well: The windows on the corner are currently display windows - I guess that's where the exterior entrance will be: clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
October 11, 200717 yr Yeah, looks like they spent $1 on design. But hey, they are investing in the city center.

October 11, 200717 yr Tax credits awarded for Cleveland developments Saturday, October 06, 2007 Alison Grant Plain Dealer Reporter Cleveland's downtown and neighborhoods got a $25 million shot in the arm Friday in the form of federal tax credits designed to attract private-sector investment. The credits are the same tool used in the renaissance of East Fourth Street -- and hope is high that they will help rejuvenate other pockets of the city ... ... October 23, 200717 yr Just a quick gripe, has anyone else noticed the fake second story facade on that new Target plaza at Great Northern? Who approved that? Fortunately, I haven't noticed anything in North Olmsted for a long time.
October 24, 200717 yr I worked on that Target store. North Olmsted made them "dress up" that store or they would never approve it. Target spent around $1.8 million in extras to get approval for that store.

October 25, 200717 yr Work on the Joshua Hall condos seems to have resumed, or begun. This is the little 4 unit project on Prospect, near the intersection with Bolivar. Also, Sushi 86 moved around the corner, and it's old space looks like it is going to be undergoing some work. A wooden construction front is being placed over the facade. This is on the Park Condos building.

October 25, 200717 yr A few hours ago, far far away from North Olmsted... I saw you today walking through the library's reading garden at lunch. I was there with my son and wife. I tried to make eye contact, but you just walked right on by.
October 25, 200717 yr There are 2 buildings in the lower left of Maydays pic about 3 stories tall. I think one of them has an older bridal dress sign on it. I always thought demoing those for a new structure or at least re-habbing them should be key on Clevelands agenda. They are very run down and do serve as an entrance to our city. There is also a parking lot next to them that could be used in a development. From above, it looks like such a valuable piece of property.

The building to the left was just rehabbed by Marous for a lawyer's office. It used to be a Christian bookstore. The building on the right better not be demoed, as I plan on rehabbing that to be my loft building when I win a mid sized lotto. It used to house a bridal shop, as you noted, but is now vacant and does look very bad. edit- I don't know my left from right. All better now.
