Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but the Terminal Tower has been lit up (red) every night lately. It started around the time of the Indians being in the playoffs, and I thought it was because of that, but the lighting has continued since. It's nice to have the TT back in our night skyline!

Yeah, every time I see it lit up, I sigh... :-)

 

Speaking of, it looks like the big net is coming down. Not sure what that means in the grand scheme of the restoration but I've hated that thing as much as the scaffolding on the upper floors:

Are you sure about that? It sounds reasonable but if you don't mind me asking - your source? As far as how National City looks pink vs. Terminal? National City is clad in travertine which is a much lighter shade than Terminal Tower's limestone.

Jacobs Field had red lighting the same night as the tower and an "I" on 200 PS. It wasn't that way just days before. I could be wrong but I'm sure it was for the Indians.

I'm sure it was - after all it wasn't for the entire month and it was clearly red, not pink. It's no longer lit except for the uppermost section above the scaffolding. One thing I noticed - the way that section is lit leads me to believe they're using new (and much brighter) lights. The old lighting scheme was that orange-y tone, whereas the new lights are more true to the tower's color. I'll see if I can get a photo sometime soon.

Sorry guys-- did not mean to post false information.  It was actually my girlfriend who told me about that and as required by higher authorities (namely her), I believed her.  :-D  I checked with someone at Forest City yesterday and they confirmed it was indeed for the Tribe.  So thanks for calling me out and I'll make sure to verify before I post going forward so I don't look like a dunce again.  :cry:

Anyway, there's work going on inside of the old Frank and Pauly's in 200 Public Square, not sure what that means......

I can't figure out why Frank & Pauly's didn't make it. It was always packed to the doors for lunch, and had a decent amount of customers for dinner. I guess this is why I will never open a restaurant. It's the same reason why I don't gamble.

Was Frank and Pauly's an actual mom and pop place?  If so, maybe they just retired.

No, because they opened one in Independence before they closed the one downtown.  Not sure if that is still there though.

 

I just found that they had a (employees withholding) tax lein against them at the end of 2006.

I think the Frank and Pauly's space is being converted into a bank. The PD said Tristate bank will be opening its first cleveland branch in 200 Public Square soon.

F&P's both locations were closed to tax liens put against the company.  Since they couldn't pay - they were forced to shut down.  It was purely ownership/management why they both shut down

The restaurant-bar business requires a lot of financial discipline...not everyone can resist the presence of ready cash.

or they did not make thier servers report credit card tips and the IRS got them for several years of neglecting it.  When the IRS gets a restuarant, typically that is what it is for. Sometimes it is for servers not being on the books at all, but that is less typical

Just a randon comment, but it looks like Google maps has updated the satelite photos of Cleveland.  Seeing as the Cavs Jersey is on the Terminal Tower and the Swing bridge has the ROAD CLOSED sign in front of it, I would have to say it was taken in May or early June around 5:00 in the evening (check out the Indians taking batting practice at Jacob's Field).

^ Great find!  It looks like they updated the whole of the city and it is much higher resolution than before.  There is now the correct house next to mine in Tremont (it was demolished two years ago and new home built).  Also, Battery Park is not just an cleared field anymore.  I'll have to stare at this for a while when I get home!

That's too funny- I noticed the same thing a couple days ago when I came back from a vacation and have wasted the entire week at work staring at the pics...but was too embarrassed to post an excited message.

On February 25 I said I would post some photos, and now 9 months later, here are some pics I took this morning.

The Prospect facade has had a new storefront constructed, tile cleaned, and light fixtures installed.  On the left side is the residential entrance lobby with call and mailboxes, and on the right, Korfant and Mazzone Construction will have their new offices at ground level, and 4 condos (2 sold as of this week)above.  When combined with the new loft condos and retail below in the building to the west, Prospect is really starting to get a nice human scale to it.  On the Bolivar side is another resident entrance and parking garage.  Interestingly, the Bolivar side was part of an expanse of a larger agglomeration of facades up until the 50's or 60's (I'll post a photo of the old facade later).

Other photos include the interior constructions of the 2 units that have been sold to this point.  One has a steel stair that ascends from the 2nd level to a 4th story clerestory that pops through the SE roof (if you walk by it's visible from down Bolivar).  All units will have rooftop access, and the skyline views are pretty sweet.

I forgot to mention that these are the Joshua Hall condos at 1148 Prospect for those who are unfamiliar.

Here's the Bolivar facades I was referencing above.  The line at the bottom of the postcard is good: "one of the finest low price stag hotels in Downtown Cleveland."  I bet those walls could talk.

I was happy to see this project get underway.  It looks very nice.  I take it this is something you worked on the design for?

 

It'd be great to see a nice low rise apt building/townhouses fill in the gap between Joshua Hall and the old Bottoms Up building.

On related subject, what's happened with the Prospect Place apartments project further west along Prospect?  They seemed to be working pretty steadily in there until earlier this summer, but then any noticeable activity stopped.  Anyone know what the hold-up is?

Prospect Place is still moving steadily along.  The are working on finishing out the apartments before they move back downstairs tot he main floor.  They do not yet have a tenant for the retail / office area so they've kind of left it alone.  They did have several water issues in the summer which pushed them back quite a bit.  orginally they were looking to have places available to lease by the end of July.  Now i hear by the end of the year.

too bad about the delays...

 

Have they been in touch with anyone about the District of Design and potential tenants from that angle?

Just stumbled across their website and their pics of some finished pads... impressive :-o!  I guess because the building is kind of hidden (and nondescript) I never paid much attention.  Here's a link to the website -

Haven't been in this building, but it was developed by Dave Perkowski. He also manages a couple of properties in Tremont and is probably best known for his renovation work at Tower Press (E. 19th & Superior) and Hyacinth Lofts (in the Slavic Village neighborhood). He's currently working on the Bloch Building (Superior and 24th-ish), a commercial building geared toward creative businesses.

 

I work out of the Tower Press Building, and it's a pretty amazing facility. I would imagine the Erie Building is of similar quality.

My girlfriend lives in a building that is adjacent to the Erie lofts and Howard Hannah has been showing the units since about midsummer I would have to say.  They are doing some rooftop decks on the units-- I was actually startled a few times when I saw workers up there and was less than optimally clothed.  :-o

 

Speaking of other construction work I can see from her apartment, does anyone know exactly what they are doing to the rooftop at the corner of St. Clair and W. 6th?  I have seen workmen crawling all over the rooftop for the better part of two months and then this Saturday a large crane appeared (almost ran into when turning onto 6th) and there is a demo dumpster along the building on St. Clair.  It looks like they are setting up some sort of rooftop deck with entrances from multiple units.  I'll try to take some photos from my vantage point and post when I get a chance.

this is a nice building.  i've seen a few units, and i'd recommend anyone who is downtown to take advantage of the open houses that were/are being held pretty frequently.

 

my takeaways:

- very nice units, perhaps a little on the small side for some of the entry units.

- price points probably a bit high considering what is available in pinnancle (for a bit more), the park building (about the same prices) and stonebridge (for less). 

- no common rooftop space.  all of the penthouses have a patio, but there isn't a common space, which i think is a lost opportunity.  the only common outdoor area is in an alley area between the buildings.

- parking is not organized well.  i can't remember exactly, but you had to rent all of the parking (couldn't buy a deeded spot), there was 1 spot per unit which was free for 1 year and then went up.

i'm not sure exactly, but i've been in a few of these units as well.  my understanding was that they had some major roof renovations that needed done initially.  however, in marketing the condo units, it was being communicated that all of the top floor levels had roof rights to the area immediately above the unit.  perhaps they are creating the access to help with the sales?  i'd think some rooftops here would definitely help sell some of these and add some needed light to some of the units.

 

I heard that the Grande Arcade (W. 6th and St. Clair) expanded the rooftop deck beyond what the roof was capable of supporting and caused some serious damage. Additionally, this voided the warranty on the roof and led to some major league assessments some as high as $30,000.00

In the WT Grant set of buildings, workers are clearing out the interior space below the older Red Brick Building (directly adjacent to May Co.)

I don't mean to nitpick, but is the St. Hyacinth neighborhood considered part of "Slavic Village"?  I was born with walking distance of St. H (in fact my grandma walked to daily mass there well into her 70s) and never thought of it as such.

i think technically its at the northern most edge of south broadway which contains slavic village. I could be wrong, and I could be motivated and look at a map......but i won't.

It's at the northernmost edge of North Broadway, but for Planning Commission purposes, that is still considered Slavic Village.  It is interesting to hear that a resident of that area didn't consider it as such, though.  Did you Grandma ever put a name to the neigborhood itself, E Rocc?

As a Cleveland transplant, I've generally heard it lumped in to Slavic Village in the CDC world, but that's probably very much the same way that Payne/Sterling/Goodrich-Gannett/the QuARTer/Asiatown is lumped in with St. Clair Superior. I've also heard a number of people argue that it's a separate nabe completely.
