I'm thinking Doubletree as Hilton has been trying to get into the Cleveland Market.

If you look closely at the mirror in the rendering, the pillow appears to have the word "Sweet" on it...

Damn.  I can remember when that was Banana Republic.

Sigh. Must we bring up those painful wounds again? :)

How's the Galleria doing in terms of retail now? Is it dead? On life support?

^it's the world's biggest and most outdated (think miami vice) food court.

Why was that painful??  That store was built in the original "safari" build.  It closed so that the NEW TC store could open.  The TC store was the first or one of the first to be a moden BR.

I dunno. I was commenting on your mournfulness.

I'm not in mourning.  There are plenty of stores to shop!

"random" because it's not quite CSU and not entirely about ECTP, but newsworthy nonetheless!

CSU, Silver Line woo another buyer

Joseph Shafran, president of Paran Management Co., heads an investor group that paid $3.6 million for the 97-suite University Commons Apartments, 1900 E. 30th St. in Cleveland.

April Beates, Paran marketing director, said the realty company was attracted by the building’s proximity to Cleveland State University and the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s new hybrid-bus Silver Line on Euclid Avenue.

Shafran's an old friend of mine -- a big-time rail and transit supporter. Way to go, Joe! Put your money where your heart and mind are.

Edit: Why not put the full article under the Euclid Corridor thread and CSU thread?

^Joe Shafran is also a big supporter of UCI. I also think that he's related to the Ratners.

Yes, he is -- on both counts. His aunt was Ruth Miller.

SCHOFIELD UPDATE.  I spoke to the owner of this building (aka The Euclid Ninth Tower)today, and asked how the pre-development grant and exploratory work went... He told they were "extremely encouraged" by what they found.  The building was looked at by VIP restoration (who has done a lot of work locally and is starting to become nationally known), and they think restoration is quite feasible.  Currently this project is sitting with Sandvick architects.  Once this portion is done and costs worked out, etc.  They will look at historic tax credits.  So nothing would more than likely happen until spring of 2009... I suppose at this point it is early enough that anything can happen, but overall he sounded pretty upbeat about the project and really would like to see it happen.  Also this would definitely include restoration of the tower / rotunda type thing in the front corner of the building...

^Very encouraging, thanks for the update.  Now if we could only bring the Hickox building back on the NW corner, we'd have a complete intersection.

What, you don't like National City's "plaza"?

^I actually don't mind Triple-L Excentric Gyratory Gyratory III.  But otherwise...I say build on it.

Yeah, the faux babbling brook is an especially nice touch.

The Bond Department store would be a nice vintage one to have as well.

Sounds like Navy Pier has a challenger for the top spot of tackiest things in Chicago...

well done overview of the Burnham group plan.  this post might be better suited to a current discussion on either the mall or the group plan; alas I was not able to find such a discussion.

^That is cool.  But I'm still not a group plan fan.  Anyone else thing it's kind of overrated?

group plan aside, i am bugging out about all that density surrounding it. look at the foreground, east and west & the rail station in the rendering - wow!

strange how that plan wasn't seen as unusual as the clev really had density like that back in the days, at least in parts like in the early flats, little hollywood, e105th, etc. even in our own family member's lifetimes. it would be nice to have some of that kind of density & energy back again in places.

one thing is for sure, nothing major will happen around there for a long while w/o a renovated cc.

I'm no doctor, but I'd just assume routine/preventative maintenance.

Just an FYI, but GoogleEarth and Google Maps now have "Street View" for Cleveland.  Check it out and let the time wasting at work begin.

From looking at the Flats East Bank thread, this is old news.

^First thing I did when I saw Mayday's mock-up on the FEB threat was open up google.earth to see if streetview had indeed arrived.  I pretty much got no work done yesterday.  I see that the PD even ran a story about it.

When I looked at my neighborhood, it appears that a lot of photos of Cleveland were taken during the high point of last summer's drought.

Got this in my email this morning. I wondered why they had asked me for permission to use this image - now I know why. This is pretty interesting - I think I might actually miss the dark facade, but who knows?

For immediate release: Minshall Development Company continues to invest in Tower and Galleria at Erieview

It is with great pleasure that Minshall Development Company announces the next phase of improvements for the Tower and Galleria at Erieview, our signature property in downtown Cleveland. Minshall Development Company CEO Werner E. Minshall states "the investments at Erieview represent Minshall Development Company's enduring commitment to downtown Cleveland".

Dollar Bank, a regional bank based in Pittsburgh, is relocating a retail branch and offices from the Tower at Erieview to the corner of East Ninth Street and St. Clair Avenue. This relocation and expansion is the result of a multi-million dollar investment. The exterior of the bank branch will feature a high-profile digital screen, glass facade, and a new entrance at the southwest corner. The Tower at Erieview is to undergo major capital improvements to better serve our tenants. A new and efficient HVAC system is scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2008. This new system utilizes the latest "green" technologies to provide a comfortable environment for tenants and guests of the Erieview complex. Installation and design of the HVAC system was handled exclusively by Johnson Controls, Inc. Representing the largest investment in the next phase of improvements, the existing facade of the Tower at Erieview will be removed and replaced with energy-efficient panels. The panels are composed of an aluminum alloy which will reflect heat, reducing the load on the building's cooling system. The new facade will also improve the aesthetic appeal of the Tower at Erieview, affirming its status as a landmark of downtown Cleveland. DAS Construction, Panzica, and Coon Restoration have been selected as the team responsible for the facade replacement.

Wow, that can't be cheap.

^ Awesome, this has always been one of my favorite buildings in Cleveland: tall, skinny, and smoke puffing rooftop.

With the Euclid Corridor, Med Mart/Convention Center, Flats, and Avenue District Projects all well on their way, among others, I was wondering if there are new projects in the works that have yet to be discussed on urbanohio.  I don't mean abandoned projects (Jacob's tower) or even likely abandoned projects (like Stark's Warehouse District) but just rumors of the kind of major developments around town.

I'm basically asking if there is anything new out there that these boards have yet to discuss.

I know a lot of buildings in NYC are having their 60s/70s facades replaced with glass or other materials, I guess Cleveland's finally getting into the act. :?

Sounds exactly like what they are in the process of doing at the Bell Atlantic building on Sixth Avenue

MayDay,

No updates on someone like Progressive building a tower downtown?

Well you know how we operate here at UrbanOhio.com - if there's an announcement of some massive project  that would make urban geeks get their collective jollies, we sure as h#ll wouldn't take the time to POST it here!  :-P

I'd say the Erieview proposal is interesting even though it's not new construction.

I was just thinking back to about 3 three years ago today..  ;)

As a kid growing up in the Cleveland area in the 60's, I was always fond of the Erieview Tower and the Top of the Town restaurant.  The rendering of the new facade looks like a big improvement.  It also looks like the architecture fits with the changes to the Galleria.

But, I was hoping that the flat roof typical of buildings in this era would be replaced with some kind of tapered triangular top.   I am not an architect, but I had something in mind like the triangular roof of the Fifth Third Building.  This would not only improve the appearance, but would increase the height as well.  Adding only 50 feet would make the building 579 feet tall and get us close to another 600 foot building.

At any rate, this will be an improvement.  This part of downtown will look nice with the Erieview, Galleria, and Holiday Inn improvements along with the Avenue district.

Okay folks, I guess it's time to fess up. I completely fabricated this press release and Photoshopped a new facade - the Tower at Erieview is NOT being reclad any time soon. Please don't hate me, but April Fools!!! ;-)

damn your knowledge of the hvac industry!

LOL!  It seemed plausible, because that color scheme would match the new work they are doing at the Dollar Bank branch.  I was seriously worried about glare from the highly reflective aluminum alley panels!
