June 5, 201213 yr Cleveland west side neighborhood turns garbage dump into community park and garden Tire planters provide a place to growing crops Posted: 06/04/2012 Last Updated: 5 hours and 50 minutes ago By: Brian Archer, newsnet5.com By: Brian Archer, newsnet5.com CLEVELAND - With the help of people living in the neighborhood, Pastor Gordon Martin of the Prince of Peace Outreach and Deliverance Ministries, organized a grassroots effort to convert an abandoned lot into a community park and garden. Their first step was to clean up the land. "This was literally a debris dump," said Martin. "There were refrigerators, car parts, tires, or course, all kinds of trash." Area residents began to clean up the lot. With the trash removed and the ground leveled out, the group decided they would create a garden. Using old tires, bathtubs, and other salvaged containers from the cleanup to hold planting soil, the residents created their garden. Anyone in the area could come and plant vegetables or flowers. June 5, 201213 yr So where is this park? I didn't see it mentioned in the article nor hear it in the video. Or does "near west side" suffice for most people? You sir, and your media background expect too much. Isn't it enough that this park exists somewhere on earth ha ha.
June 5, 201213 yr It's in Stockyards, at W. 54th and Storer. The Stockyard Redevelopment Organization (RIP) assisted with much of the grant writing, prison muscle (via Court Community Service), and organizing to get the mural painted and seeds and soil purchased, garden planted, etc. The garden has actually been there for a few years.
June 5, 201213 yr Stockyards at approximately 5413 Storer Ave. Apparently this is an older project that is just being highlighted now. There is a streetview shot from 2009 of the park/garden. (^ err what he said)

June 5, 201213 yr I do like the planters though. As many have probably seen, all the planters have had their summer "bouquets" placed within... as of yesterday. it now includes all of Euclid (up to CSU), a large part of E. 9th, and a short stretch of E. 14th. On the new planters on E. 9th and E. 14th there is a decal on the back of each one that says something about the sonsorship of the Cleveland Rotary Club. It's kinda too much to be on every one. All in all though, these look great.

June 12, 201213 yr Judging by the Innerbelt webcam it looks like construction has started on the Tri-C parking garage at the very busy intersection of Ontario and Carnegie. Next year at this time that intersection will look completely different. And that's a good thing.

June 15, 201212 yr I'm sure it's been mentioned somewhere around here, but does anyone know what's being done at Superior and E 105th? It just looks like they've done a foundation at this point. Edit: Nevermind, I took a second look and it appears they were just doing prep work for a surface lot that has a lot of power, sewer and water lines running underneath it. :-(
June 22, 201212 yr Anyone know what is going on the surface parking lot on the south side of St Clair between West 6 and West 9th? They've torn up most of the parking lot and have dug down to the original foundations of the former buildings. The workers on site wouldn't say (or didn't know), except that they were removing a bunch of old fill from the building and putting in new fill. Seems to be a pretty expensive project to just update the surface lot, but maybe it was seriously failing?
June 22, 201212 yr I would imagine that if it was a building project on that prime piece of real estate we would have known about it already and would have been discussing it for months. I am guessing that it is just a re-building of the surface lot for one reason or another.
June 22, 201212 yr Can anyone explain the logic of why Tri-C is putting up a parking garage across the street from Progressive Field. Are they trying to be in the parking garage business or do they expect Tri-C students to walk 4-5 blocks to get to their classrooms?
June 22, 201212 yr Well their district office is right next door and they did lose some parking spaces due to the construction of the new interbelt bridge. I bet being right next door to progressive field made it a bit easier too.
June 22, 201212 yr Author Well their district office is right next door and they did lose some parking spaces due to the construction of the new interbelt bridge. I bet being right next door to progressive field made it a bit easier too. Yep. Parking for Tri-C staff during the weekdays, baseball parking on weeknights and weekends. Probably will get a pretty consistent stream of revenue. It's not the most transit-accessible area of the city -- unless of course they build a rapid station as part of some future development on that newly opened-up triangle of land along Ontario between Eagle and Carnegie (yep, I'm pushing that agenda!).... http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D12/PlanningEngineering/Documents/051911%20Hope%20Memorial%20Bridge%20East%20End.pdf "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 5, 201212 yr historic downtown buildings will be transformed into apartments using tax credits Thursday, July 05, 2012 The State of Ohio has awarded $35.8 million in tax credits to 18 owners who are planning to rehabilitate 44 historic buildings across the state. Two of the projects, the Vincent building and the Truman building, are located in downtown Cleveland. The Truman building, located on Euclid Avenue between E. 9th and 12th streets, will be renovated to include retail storefronts, office space, 18 market rate apartments and parking. Construction is expected to create at least 50 jobs. The Vincent Tower, whose upper floors were refurbished for the digital marketing agency Rosetta, will be rehabbed to include 85 market rate apartments. The building, which is located at 629 Euclid Avenue, will receive a $7 million investment. The project will retain 400-plus jobs and create at least 50 construction jobs. Both projects will feed the strong demand for apartments downtown. Currently, occupancy rates are at about 96 percent and many buildings have waiting lists. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/historicpreservationcredits070512.aspx?utm_source=VerticalResponse&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=historic+downtown+buildings+will+be+transformed+into+apartments+using+tax+credits&utm_content={Email_Address}&utm_campaign=Wish+You+Were+Here
July 5, 201212 yr I really hope the Truman Building uses Barn court for a parking garage entrance and not one of the storefronts. The planning commission needs to push that.

July 10, 201212 yr Potentially interesting... [though hopefully not at the expense of our 1% chance of future transit restoration there] Time to transform Cleveland's Detroit-Superior Bridge from What-If to Wow: Joe Frolik Levin began recruiting other dreamers and the result is the Bridge Project, a community planning effort that involves the city, the county, Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative and Ohio City and downtown stakeholders. Backed by nearly $100,000 in planning money from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency and the National Endowment for the Arts, the partners hope to offer a framework for what could be done on the bridge and how to pay for and maintain it. They're also looking at its potential to spur private development. ... More concepts are coming. The website for this year's Cleveland Design Competition -- organized by a pair of young, local architects -- went live Monday. It, too, is seeking ideas for the lower deck. The timing, Levin insists, couldn't be better. http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2012/07/post_82.html
July 11, 201212 yr Looks like this project is actually happening. Check out the PDF for an excellent plan of what could become a major recreational thoroughfare, especially now that Dike 14 is open to the public! To me this is one of those "low hanging fruit" projects that can just do SO much for an entire area's vibrancy. http://www.gcbl.org/transportation/bikes/cycling-advocacy-and-planning/lake-to-lake-trail
July 17, 201212 yr Was there ever any merit to the glass tower to be built on public square or was that a pipe dream from the beginning? Also is there any talk of building the tower on top of 515 Euclid?
July 17, 201212 yr Until rents go up in Cleveland or office vacancies go down, I highly doubt anything will be built at 515. I do see it eventually though.
July 17, 201212 yr ^Agreed, but it is possible rents are creeping up. And the economics for that site might be a little different (e.g., no alternative uses for the site; foundation already dug), but not sure which way that cuts given the unorthodox stating that would be required. ^^I guess it depends on your definition of "pipe dream," but there was a concrete proposal by Jacobs and Hines to build a tower on Public Square in 2008 (http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20080528/FREE/330573416), but like all developer driven office buildings, it was conditioned on finding tenants. At the time, a number of large office tenants were up for grabs downtown as their leases were set to expire and were all being chased by developers. In short, if I remember this right off the top of my head, Flats East Bank and old BP tower won, Jacobs/Hines lost.
July 23, 201212 yr Another company expanding into Cleveland...barely...but a win regardless: "Keeping companies' employees healthy has been Bravo Wellness' mission since opening its doors in 2008, but the company's own health has forced it to outgrow its current digs in Avon. Bravo in October plans to move its roughly 80 full-time employees to a larger space on Cleveland's southwest side, nearly adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. July 30, 201212 yr Anybody know something that is going on in the upper part of this building that has a landing on the viaduct? I know its a long shot to get information, but there is a dumpster and some work being done to what could become an absolutely STUNNING condo/apartment conversion. There was a wall of windows taken out, and a beautiful wood floor, and a lone piano sitting in the space. I respected the property too much to photograph. http://goo.gl/maps/hokFF
July 30, 201212 yr Scav, was it the Left Bank Building? http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/16775939/1250-Riverbed-Cleveland-OH/
July 30, 201212 yr IIRC, there was a proposal to tear the place down for new residential. I think I remember that as well. That would be a shame. That building is a great look into Cleveland's past, and would make for a great conversion.
July 30, 201212 yr ^Yeah, I think something about that surfaced on these boards several months (years?) ago. My sense was that it was probably marketing fluff. Looks like it was on the market for a while and the seller was covering all the bases. At least from the outside it's an awesome building and, I'd guess, has a ton of value intact.
July 30, 201212 yr The Left Bank building has had loft spaces in it for decades. It's a very cool space and has plenty of residents.
July 30, 201212 yr Scav, was it the Left Bank Building? http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/16775939/1250-Riverbed-Cleveland-OH/ Yeah thats the one! There is a wall of windows torn out on the top floor where it meets the viaduct bridge. There is also a dumpster at the end of the viaduct.
July 30, 201212 yr For whatever reason, the space that faces the viaduct has looked like a wreck for long while, so this is great news. I had the superficial impression that the ownership ran it on a bit of a shoestring, but from the withdrawn real estate listing I linked to above, I wonder if it's now in the hands of someone with a little more capital to invest.
July 30, 201212 yr I have had friends "live" (as its not zoned for legal living currently) in that building over the years. Its an interesting place. Its pretty rough artists lofts at the moment. No real kitchens or bathrooms in the units, basically in the condition a lot of artists loft buildings are in in Midtown. It has a few oddball tenants, including a swingers club on the first floor. No AC, either, which makes attending parties in that place in the summer a sweat box. It does have some great views of downtown, provided you are on the downtown side of the building. Otherwise you're staring at a stone wall out your window in some of the spaces on the other side of the building. While it would make a great place for yuppies to live, I think quite a few people in my circles prefer it how it is...
