This is an interesting development project. These are storefronts along the sidewalk of Pearl Road in Old Brooklyn, proposed to be converted to housing. On Streetview, it looks like one of the storefronts was already converted to a residence (pretty cheap/low-class looking in my opinion)....

Sounds like this owner got a little friendly advice on how to submit a project to the city's approval's process....

What happened to this space next to the Union Club on Euclid Ave, across from the Halle building? Google street view shows the surface lot at ground level a few years ago. I was walking around a couple weeks ago and noticed it was dug out along the foundation of the neighboring building. It's probably been like this for a while, but I never noticed.

The neighboring building has some of the brick/concrete material torn off. Who owns the space now? Were they planning to expand into it (interesting) or just build a parking garage (boring)?

I seem to recall that building having a structural issue that resulted in an evacuation some time last year or so. Caused or exacerbated by a strong storm/weather I think.

Voting has opened and lasts until Feb 20th.

LAND studio's AHA proposal:

^Some of the concrete cladding bulged due to water infiltration IIRC.  I do not remember why they decided to dig out the surface lot for simple surface parking below grade.  Not sure what their plan is...

My understanding is that the Union Club owns the lot and the upper surface was structurally unstable.  So they tore it out and connected the former basement to their too-small parking garage.  Unrelated to whatever is going on with the adjacent building's facade.

Family Dollar to share plans for West 130th Street store in Cleveland

By Ken Prendergast, Sun News

CLEVELAND Plans for a Family Dollar Store are scheduled to be presented at 9 a.m. Friday to the city’s Planning Commission to get approvals for demolition of two structures and construction of the store.

The store is proposed to be located at 4588 W. 130th St., at the southwest corner of Wilton Avenue, according to the Planning Commission’s docket. This site is across the street from the West Park Slovenian National Home.

To make way for the store, two structures are proposed to be demolished — Tiny Tikes Day Care and the Family Trio Restaurant & Pizzeria that was founded in 1950 and previously owned by the Racchi family. It has been used by several small businesses since the restaurant closed in the late 1990s.

Most of the ground floor of that building is already parking.  Enough curb cuts, though!

Cars already took over the streets. Now they are taking over the sidewalks!!!! What's next, restaurants that you drive through! ;)

Maybe to take advantage of the lack of it near the convention center?

Most of the ground floor is already parking, it looks like they're just removing a storefront for a more visible parking entrance. Maybe it's a good sign that the owners are going to spend a bit more fixing up the rest of the building. (I can hope can't I?)

This is old, but I don't recall seeing it posted anywhere. Should be an exciting project and another architectural gem for Cleveland.

NASA is in the process of creating a new centralized downtown campus area at Lewis Field with the Research Support Building being at its new central hub. The Research Support building will house support offices such as a credit union, cafeteria, etc on the first floor and federal office space on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The proposed building will be located at NASA's Glenn Research Center (GRC) located on Lewis Field in Cleveland, Ohio. This new project will need to be responsive to NASA's overall campus and master plan and is adjacent to a National Register Historic District.

SCOPE OF WORK

The scope of professional services will require at a minimum: professional architectural, landscape architectural, engineering, interior design, and related consulting services for concept design documents, design development documents, construction documents, specifications, cost estimates, value engineering services, BIM, computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), LEED administration, and post-construction contract services (PCCS) for the new three-story Research Support Building. The project is also to include GSA design standards and NASA Procedural Requirements (NPR) for secure facilities; conformance to the P-100 (Facility Standards for Public Buildings), including at a minimum LEED Gold requirements; and customer agency requirements.

Not sure we're to put this, but the fountain at the NE quad of Public Square was at legitimate full blast this week.  Looks so much better than a dried out pit, which its been ever since I can remember.

I noticed that too! I walked by it on my way home today. It looked really good.

Is it still leaking? That was part of the problem

I didn't notice any water on the ground at all.

I hate to ask these kinds of questions but I just thought someone might know.... What happened to the proposal of putting a mural on the blank south side of the Standard Building? Wasn't this proposed to the planning commission like 2 years ago?

^Thankfully, although you may not agree I think those plans were abandoned when the building was put up for auction last year. I was not a fan. That has always been one of my favorite buildings and to me its perfect for residential conversion. If that happened I could imagine windows being put into that blank wall. I hope that is the next building to be discussed.

Euclid Avenue mansion, laden with public debt, might have future as children's museum (gallery)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The last 19th-century mansion standing on Cleveland's former Millionaire's Row might get another shot at life, after a tangled decade that started with high hopes for renovation and ended with the prospect of foreclosure.

In an unusual transaction, the city of Cleveland plans to take possession of the empty Stager-Beckwith mansion and sell it to Michael Chesler, a local developer who aims to remake the historic house for the Children's Museum of Cleveland.

The deal, approved by Cleveland City Council on Monday, would avert a foreclosure sale of the Euclid Avenue property to pay off nearly $550,000 in overdue taxes. If Chesler's plan works, it could provide a bit of salve for the city -- which is set to lose more than $4.5 million on a bad loan to the house's current owner.

"We really want to see the building preserved and utilized for something that will benefit the whole neighborhood," said Tracey Nichols, the city's economic development director. "We don't want to take the risk of a sheriff's sale."

For five years, the mansion has been sitting empty. The owner, a Ferchill Group affiliate called Stager-Beckwith Associates Ltd., owes more than $4.7 million on the city loan. Public records show Stager-Beckwith also hasn't been paying property taxes to Cuyahoga County.

^From the article...

The museum's current land, just off Euclid and Stearns Road, might be more valuable for another use. An unidentified developer is looking at the site, owned by neighborhood nonprofit University Circle Inc., for a mixed-use project that would include housing.

Was this that idea for a residential high-rise that was floated a few months back (perhaps lost in the 2013 UO Crash

I can think of several reasons for why this is so, county or federal funding for the resurfacing for example putting control out of the city's hands, but I hate to see Cleveland cited (again) as an example of what not to do.  I hope our city leaders see this article!

^Streetsblog quite regularly cites Cleveland because Angie Schmitt is a Clevelander. She's basically been the de facto leader of the opposition to the Opportunity Corridor and writes for both Streetsblog and Rustwire (regularly though not exclusively about Cleveland). Come to think of it, I'd be shocked if she's not at least an occasional lurker on here.

I like Angie but she often dislikes things BECAUSE they are occurring in Cleveland. To her, the grass is almost always greener on the other side.

But she most definitely cares about the city where she lives, and therefore probably holds it to higher standards. OK back to projects & construction.

And you want to see things done based on your priorities, which you seem to believe are shared by the majority. Are they? Who cares? We all do the things we believe are right and correct and let history judge us.

And just because she doesn't like the same kind of development you like, doesn't mean she's opposed to development. In fact, I know that she is very pro-development. She has her beliefs in what physical forms and locations that development should take. You have yours. Whoever can communicate the benefits of those beliefs and get others to go along with them will be who is "right" -- whatever that means.

now, lets hope alot the vacant offices turn into residential dwellings and when the demand comes back for office space that have to build.  when that happens, we can see a real construction boom/renaissance downtown.
