Lol it is, admittedly, my crowd. Though I wouldn't apply quite that label.

I worry that it won't survive in Independence, though. I honestly would've loved to see it go on the West Bank.

Me too, but that was never going to happen. TG is an attraction and it will do fine in Independence. If nothing else, it will survive because of the serious lack of decent driving ranges within 30 minutes of downtown.

Hey everyone, just wanted to announce a secret lil project I've been working on the past three months, which hopefully explains why I haven't made as many renderings as of late:   I've alway

Not sure if this is the best place for this, but has anyone else noticed that the Google Maps 3D view of Cleveland seems to have been updated recently?  Last time I looked at it the 3D view seemed to be a couple years old.  For example the old version showed the Hilton as just a construction site.  If you turned off 3D view before it showed you an flat aerial photo that appeared more recent.  The current 3D view can be dated by the progress on some projects: for example the Snavely construction on W. 25th shows about 3 floors, the exterior of the med school at the Clinic looks done, and Centric in University Circle reaches 4 floors.  I don't know exactly what they do to update these 3D scans, but I think it involves flying planes with scanners over town - it can't be cheap.  For that reason I've been curious how often these scans would be updated.

^ a couple years ago i use to consistently bother google to update their maps over in detroit shoreway, there was so much construction going on, the images were years old.  I didnt think that was a fair representation so i would e-mail them.  They updated it a few times.

Edit, after i wrote that, i just went in and check it out.  The satellite image doesnt even have the 73rd interchange or edgewater beach house CONSTRUCTION site.  pretty lame

"Car vending machine" coming to Northeast Ohio, tower going up in Warrensville Heights

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio - A “car vending machine” is making its way to the Midwest, with construction underway at its latest location in Warrensville Heights.

Carvana is a brightly lit tower of cars that will stand seven stories tall and be highly visibly off of Highway 271.

That’s why Warrensville Heights Mayor Brad Sellers thought his city would be a perfect fit.

That's why they put Yugo dealerships at the top of hills so they could be driven away (but not returned either). ;)

Not sure if I am in the right thread for this. But I noticed Knight Frank has established a presence in Cleveland.

I've seen a few of there signs around the city - this is terrific considering they largely maintain "premier" cities like NY, London, SF, Boston, etc.

What do they do? Commercial or residential realty? Or?

Are you referring to Newmark Knight Frank?  They acquired Grubb & Ellis, who already had a presence here, a few years back when many commercial brokerages were consolidating.

Could have sworn we had a Steelyard Commons thread, but couldn't find it when I searched.

Site prep work has started on the triangle of land between Keybank and Quigley Rd. No signs as to whats going to be there, but the top layer of soil has been removed and a building site has been staked out, with heavy equipment around.

It was in the Completed Projects section.  Since there is active construction, I have moved it back to Northeast Ohio Projects and Construction.  Put "Steelyard" into the search box and it will come up.

I heard a story the other day... that several tech leaders in Cleveland had Pixar executives and other digital-tech companies in Cleveland in 2014, looking to open facilities in MidTown.

When our tech leaders brought the executives to City Hall to meet Mayor Jackson, he said he was busy.. the execs then swiftly went to Burke Lakefront never to return again.

Can anyone substantiate this????

Did we ever get any confirmation on this?

^is it an indoor golf course?

Of sorts. It's a driving range / Dave and Buster's / Night club.

Top Golf is to golf what Corner Alley is to bowling.  It can be fun, but I don't think people go there to work on their game.

Did we ever get any confirmation on this?

I did, shortly after posting this. I'm sorry I forgot to relay it here.

The source and story were both legit - Pixar was very close to opening here, and the meeting with the mayor was essentially a formality. However, the snub understandably angered the execs that made the trip out here, and they saw it as a reflection of how cooperative the city government would be.

Not a fan of the mayor, but I'm extremely skeptical this really happened.

Have it from a person who was in the meeting the night before, who would've been contracted for part of the facility build. That's about as good as I can get with it - so unless he's just bitter and lying to me, I'm pretty confident about it.

Not a fan of the mayor, but I'm extremely skeptical this really happened.

I am skeptical too.  I know of people who have met with the Mayor for smaller things than this.  Perhaps this group didn;t reach out to the mayor;s office ahead of time to schedule a meeting.

Agreed--but for something as significant as this, the mayor might want to consider a deviation from his calendar.  That is something I could see Frank Jackson not doing and instead going to a meeting about the dirt bike track....

Also true.  But since we don't know both sides of the story I will continue my skepticism.

Sent a text this morning:

Me: "Hey remember our conversation a while back re: Pixar moving some operations to Cleveland? You sure that the part about Jackson is true?"

Source: "Lol yeah. When someone explains to u why ur not getting a contract u tend to remember why."

It wasn't DeAloia, or he won't reference it publicly.  I tweeted at him and he replied referencing the Apple balldrop in 2007.

So who is sharing this info various local news outlets?

I wonder if this was originally a seed planted by Lee Unkrich, originally from the NEO area (Chagrin Falls)?

I never asked for names. But actually, someone referred to an Apple blunder above, and I had heard that Apple was the company holding Pixar's hand in all of this.

I don't have the type of sources that can get confirmation in any greater detail though

"The one-of-a-kind open-air wastewater transportation system, which stands three stories above the street and runs a total length of more than 60 miles throughout the metropolitan area, will reportedly move an estimated 90 billion gallons of raw sewage across the city each year, carrying urine and feces from the suburbs to downtown, and from University Circle to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

The quotes from Frank Jackson are too wordy and eloquent to be real.... I smell fake news! :)

“But what the region lacks, said Russo, are large sound stages where productions can shoot year-round. Schwarz said he has been talking with private developers about the possibility of building a studio complex near downtown.

Russo, who, along with his brother Joe, shot much of Captain America: The Winter Soldier in Cleveland in 2013, said he likes the idea. Although they shot their last few movies in Atlanta, he said he’d gladly move production up north if the infrastructure were here.”

Could some of the larger former factories on the near east side be built out to support such use?

My guess is they have too many supporting columns and not enough clear interior space.

Doesn't the Warner-Swasey complex have open space? Or the low-level building at the old Westinghouse plant near Edgewater Park? Or the Brown Hoisting Company in the 4500 block of Hamilton Ave? Or maybe even the Masonic Auditorium on Euclid Avenue?

Cleveland Heights could support such a facility at Severance Town Center

Of all you mentioned I'd say the best chance of having that kind of space is the Brown Hoist company, but I've never been in it.  Those old factories weren't built with weight bearing roof trusses--lots of columns in them.  Sound stages are built like airplane hangers, but with load-bearing roofs.  Wide open floor space.

Isn't there a current user in the Brown Hoist building?

Just add mushrooms: How the Hulett Hotel could spawn other new construction in Ohio City

For most people, mushrooms bring to mind a pizza topping or another culinary dish (or even an invasive lawn growth). But Chris Maurer, principal architect and founder for redhouse studio in Ohio City, sees mushrooms—or mycelium, the organism that sprouts to fruit mushrooms—and thinks building materials.

In fact, Maurer and his team have translated that vision into an innovative way to recycle debris from demolished homes and buildings. His approach turns mycelium into biomaterial that can be used to rebuild in disaster zones, save millions of tons of debris from landfills, or even take debris from the renovation of a 19th century building on W. 25th for the proposed Hulett Hotel and create a new storage shed for Refugee Response and Ohio City Farm.

“Cleveland is ground zero for biocycling,” says Maurer, citing projects like the hotel or the approximately 9,000 abandoned and condemned houses that have been demolished in Cleveland since 2006.

All that debris could be used to recycle demolished structures into new construction—using mycelium.

The Brown Hoisting Building might not fit the bill...

An article in the Plain Dealer on May 22, 1902 (page 14) describes the factory building. "The main shop covers about 156,000 square feet of ground, constituting one large room without a single partition. The roofs are supported by heavy steel columns placed at intervals of about forty to seventy feet.

Not nearly large enough to shoot movies in.  It's an old vaudeville style theater, approximately the same size as the Agora.

What if the seating was removed?

Wait a sec... How hard it is it to build a low-cost, free-standing, indoor, open-air sound stage? Seems to me the cost would be relatively low.

Still too many columns and ceilings are too low.

The IX Center would work--it's history as a bomber plant gives it high ceilings and wide open floor space.
