February 16, 20214 yr Wow, Vancouver by far has the most impressive skyline for a city it's size. You would never see that in the U.S. for a metro area of 2.4M. No matter what the geographic constraints are.

February 24, 20214 yr London's skyline is hideous. I guess architects are doing DMT too, now. That picture of NYC isn't flattering at all, with all the housing projects. This thread really makes me appreciate smaller cities. Edited February 24, 20214 yr by David

March 20, 20214 yr The recently completed Deansgate Square development in Manchester, England. Manchester’s downtown population was 500 in 1990 and is set to hit 100,000 by 2025. It’s grown 35,000 in the last four years alone. My hovercraft is full of eels
March 22, 20214 yr That's incredible! I was in Manchester in 2007 and it reminded me a lot of Cleveland. You could see that it had been a great industrial city but had a lot of missing pieces, yet there were some pockets of revitalizing already springing up. Meanwhile, I came here to post this crazedensity picture from Hong Kong I just saw on Facebook........ You could see that it had been a great industrial city but had a lot of missing pieces, yet there were some pockets of revitalizing already springing up. I was born in Manchester in the late 60s and moved away in the early 90s. However, I've always gone back frequently and even since I moved to the US around 20 years ago, I still get there 2-3 times a year. Each time I go back, the progress is plain to see, especially over this last 10-12 years, where it has been nothing short of jaw-dropping. When I was last there, just before Covid, my hotel room looked out over the river to the Salford side, where there were cranes covering the whole field of vision. A ton of mid to high-rise development in a part of the city that for decades, no-one in their right mind would've wanted to go to. One major catalyst in Manchester's development that can't be overstated, is the massive expansion of the Metrolink light rail/ tram system to all corners of the metro area. The parallels with Cleveland are multiple and is the reason after spending time living in Miami and NJ/ NYC, I feel most at home here. I've often told people that the two cities feel similar and that Cleveland is on the same general track as Manchester, albeit about 10 years behind. My hovercraft is full of eels

Terminal Tower was the 2nd tallest building in the world (after NYC Woolworth Building) when completed, but was quickly eclipsed by the Chrysler Building and several others in NYC. It remained the tallest outside NYC in the world until 1953, when the Moscow State University tower was built. The latter was certainly reminiscent of the former. Here’s a close up of the top. If you ever travel to Moscow, you can see this building from miles around as it sits up on a hill by itself. A very imposing structure in this way (and how I'm sure Stalin imagined it).

It's the bland, hideous housing stock and downtown architecture in general that sucks. The reason that filming everything there works so well is b/c their neighborhoods and downtown are so generic-looking, they can pass for Anytown, USA. Too bad it couldn't 'boom' during better architectural eras. Edited June 21, 20213 yr by David
