A side of Cincinnati that will be new to...well, probably nobody!

Took a walk through Eden Park, Mt. Adams for lunch, down the Celestial Street Steps, across the Purple People Bridge, and thence to Newport on the Levee for ice cream and a movie...and a cab back home!  It was gorgeous this morning, a bit less so during the walk - we got caught in a squall in Eden Park.  But a beautiful day.

Any idea what's up with the luau theme?

The bush has been wacked...good to see - as long as the hillside stays where it's supposed to.

New construction in Mt. Adams...they shoehorned this one in there, but man is it gonna have some killer views...

These are doubtless some of the coolest steps in the city.  Not the prettiest (my vote for that currently goes to the ones between the Elsinore Towers and the Art Museum), but the bridge over 50 makes these the coolest...

See the car in the middle of this shot, northbound on the bridge, far right lane?  It was broken down.  As my wife and I were checking out the view back up towards Mt. Adams, the girl who had been driving it walked up the steps - there was no break-down lane on the bridge, and she didn't feel safe waiting with it, didn't have a phone, etc., so she went walking to get to somewhere to call AAA.  We let her call them with my phone, they said it would be an hour or so, and then we saw a cop pull up.  So we called the Newport Police, and they said a tow truck was on the way.  She didn't have a phone, didn't have cash, and we were worried about her walking back there on the bridge, offered to pay for a cab for her (they're always standing out front of Montgomery Inn), but she decided to walk back.  It's actually not as far as it seems - we saw her get there a few minutes after she left.

Lesson?  Always carry at least a little cash, and an emergency cell phone is a pretty cheap investment.  Oh, and include breakdown lanes whenever you build a bridge!

Anyone know the story on this house?  There's not a lot of Islamic-looking architecture in the city (the only other thing that comes to mind is the crescent and star at the top of the Eden Park Gazebo, which I've heard is a Basque symbol of some sort)...

awesome tour.  i love the bridge shots here.  good work.

Good stuff, looks like a fun time.

¡Qué bueno!  I am jealous of your blooming flowers in Cincy... getting pretty sick of the brown up here!

Fat Fish Blue or whatever had terrible food and service.  Glad that shit is gone.

Unique shots! The L&N bridge is one massive, imposing structure.

riverviewer - what you may lose in 'bravery' you make up for in endurance and a quick eye.  wasn't that guy leaving his 'mark' on the serpentine wall actually an old album cover for The Who or something?  ;)    thanks for that great walk.....

I guess I'm the nobody you're talking about. I think I could learn to love Cincinnati...

^It doesn't take much!  Take a week's vacation, stay a couple nights in a B&B in Clifton's Gaslight (there are at least two to choose from, maybe more), a couple nights downtown, a couple nights somewhere near Mainstrasse in Covington, and we'll have you hooked!  The only thing that could drag you away would be the siren's call of Cleveland and Lake Erie...

OTRFan - actually, my wife's the one who saw it...asked me if he was doing what she thought he was doing...er, yep!  You know, don't you think you'd find somewhere a little less conspicuous?  There are bridges everywhere around there, and while they've done a good job getting rid of places folks could hide, still, you don't have to stand on top of the Serpentine Goddamn Wall...jeez...

Imposing...this sounds like a negative comment.  I dont know how you couldnt like a beautiful old bridge like that...not to mention its pedestrian only (how cool).  It will also be nice when they tap light rail in to the other side of the pedestrian way on the bridge.

^Where do you get negative from that?  I suspect you're misreading him...

^^ I agree, Rob is a railroad buff, and loves bridges like that.

Wonderful tour Riverview.  Lots of fun, and just a touch of tragedy (broken car and man peeing :-o )  Thanks for sharing your walk.

^Well thats good to hear, because it is beautiful bridge.  'Imposing' just has a negative sound to it....sorry if I misunderstood. :-)

Captain Crunch, LOL.....

I wish I knew the story on that Mt. Adams house, too.  And that median sidewalk on Columbia Pkwy...man, I don't think that would be a very pleasant place to walk, but I just know I'll have to do it some day.

These are some great shots.  I'm a fan of the horse/cell phone one most of all.

I saw in the paper that it just sold again recently.  It had been for sale forever.

Riverview--

I was born in Cleveland, and as much as I love it, 20 years in California and the Mid South has thinned my blood. Besides, I am looking for a new place(new to me, that is). Cincinnati just may be the ticket ...

My friend and I took that same exact path. Even all the way to Newport. We walked all the way back too but I regreted it, lol. About that isamic style house, I heard it was once owned by David Justice (who happend to be my favorite baseball player when I was younger). David Justice is from here so it makes sense.

David Justice owned it from 1998 through 2003...if it sold recently, the auditor's site doesn't have the information recorded yet (address is 945 Hill).

Conover Court - I definitely don't want to be recruiting for Cincinnati at the expense of our sister cities - but if you're going to be leaving Cleveland anyway, Cincinnati's a wonderful option...you should come down to Cincinnati's meet on May 20th, see the UrbanOhio point of view, with some amazing folks leading tours and all that...

I saw it for sale about 2003 so I guess it was when David Justice was selling it. I remember the asking price was like around 950k. I bet that house is amazing inside!

CC: If you are moving to Cincinnati, whats a better choice than Hamilton? The cost of living is amazingly low with the cheapest utilities in Ohio and a very affordable, yet very diverse housing stock. With a revival of downtown, riverfront development, restoration of historic neighborhoods, and a new identity found in the arts, specifically sculpture, Hamilton is an exciting place to be right now. Cincinnati and Dayton are just a short drive away, as well as many other smaller urban centers. Retire in a close-knit community that will simply fascinate you until death.

Sorry...just can't go without mentioning it...

That's gotta go on a pamphlet or banner or something...or a t-shirt.  "Be fascinated until death...in Hamilton!"

^LOL. Well thats better than the shirts they are printing up now:

"London

Paris

Rome

Hamilton"

Riverviewer,

I haven't been to Cleveland in ten years, I currently live outside of Memphis, TN. But I am a restless spirit who likes to move to totally new places. I am a United Methodist minister, and southwest Ohio is a hotbed of our denomination. I'd love to serve a church (other than St. Awesome's in Rivage) in an urban setting. If any of you know any Methodists, I'd be interested to talk about the state of the church in your area.

Daffodils in Cincinnati while snow falls in Cleveland gives Cincinnati bonus points over the great gray city to the north!

lmao that's ironic as hell because Rome obviously doesn't fit in that list! :]

^ Ever been to Rome, NY?

Actually, I used to play organ for Northside United Methodist Church, back before it shut down (I believe that was 2002 or so), and I'm friends with the former pastor.  He's kind of bounced around with AME and some other sub-denomination, C-something? forget what it's called...very cool guy - he helps lead tours at the Freedom Center on the weekends, attended seminary in Tennessee, I believe, tried to get Northside's church revived, but it was the wrong church in the wrong place at the wrong time...

Anyway, if you'd like to talk with him, PM me and I'll hook you up with him...
