Guess it could mostly be records and other stuff that isn’t interesting for display.
October 10, 20222 yr I believe there is quite a bit that the Ohio History Connection owns but that cannot display due to space requirements/restrictions, or displays on a rotating basis. For example, they took a lot from the old Ohio History of Flight Museum that used to be on the grounds of CMH, but most remains in storage or in temporary exhibits. I guess this new facility will make the logistics of rotating exhibits and artifacts easier. As a sidebar, looking at Google Maps and the location of the OHC and the greater fairgrounds made me sad. The current setup is such a mishmash of buildings, parking lots, unused green space, and weird streets. It's about time the expo center, history connection, and the city get together to completely reimagine that whole swath of land from East 11th all the way up to Hudson St. There's so much opportunity to remake the layout and create a really incredible space for all the events that take place there.

I measured it out once and just the entire campus including historic crew stadium and the fairgrounds occupies, like, 1.5km^2 of space. For context, the main campus of Ohio State occupies 2.26km^2 of space. It's just absolutely atrocious land use as this city continues to grow.

I know it wouldn’t probably be possible, but I think it would be awesome to turn the may walk way, where all the food vendors are, into a little old fashion main st. Work with the Ohio history connection and build something awesome. I get it would be hard for the vendors to move their stuff into the spaces, but it would look awesome. add some parking garages, 5+ stories and get rid of the parking lots. Building retail and housing, mixed with hotels.

I've shared my VERY rough idea of what I would do with the area a couple of times on here. "CL" would be Columbus LIVE! similar to what they have in South Philly and Arlington, TX among others. The yellow highlighted area would be hotels/mixed use areas. The OHC would remain but in a smaller footprint. Parking would be added via two new decks and some remaining flat parking for tailgating purposes. The red outline would be the fairgrounds and relocation of the OHSP to either London, Reynoldsburg where the fire academy is located or a new location TBD. The darker green would be the Crew's new training facility and the light green the main roads throughout. @VintageLifelet me know if this shows up, I did a very amateur sketch of a similar idea back in 2019. I really think they missed the ball on this and could’ve really created another district. Possibly even added office/event space for the Quarter Horse Congress.

I do not see a sketch, but yea they still have opportunities to make it better. For sure moving the quarter horse building to the area would be a great decision. Maybe once Columbus builds up even more, the area will be a disaster to do anything in and they will fix it up then.
October 11, 20222 yr I’ve never understood that area… all due respect but why is our state police training facility still right there? The facility out in Reynoldsburg makes the most sense and you could probably even cross train to get EMS certifications, etc. A lot of questionable decisions. Thankful for LDC kind of “completing” the AD but this was such a missed opportunity to do something impactful with this stretch of land.
October 11, 20222 yr Thoughts are a renovated Mapfre/LDC, new practice facility and keeping with the sports theme a new field house replaces the OSHP facility(dark green). The Columbus Live! portion would have year round crowds as many would use the hotels for the Crew, OSU football, Fair, Congress, high school sports and concerts at the field house and stadium. Brown = Offices for AQHC and possibly the OHSAA? Purple = Hotels Pink = Mixed Use Dark Blue = various sized parking decks, used by the fair, Congress, entertainment, hotels, etc.
October 12, 20222 yr It has been 27 months since the Ohio Expo 2050 task force was created. I am eagerly looking forward to reading their [surely disappointing] report. I have shared many thoughts on this thread about how transformational the land between Hudson and the railroad tracks south of 11th could be but the thing we always have to remember is the state isn't going to do anything too drastic that could be seen as overly favoring Columbus. Even something as simple as a grant riles politicians up over a city getting more than it 'deserves' which Is what holds back alot of great ideas. Here's hoping some of these folks can have some beneficial influence.

I don’t feel like looking any of these people up, but what is the over/under on most of them being 60+ and mostly living in rural/suburb areas around Columbus, and other small cities throughout the state? I don’t have a lot of hope in any of them coming up with anything great.
October 12, 20222 yr It is certainly alot of that but there are a few things that might pull in favor of better options than the status quo. I'm not betting on that but certainly a couple of the folks will be more likely to push for bigger ideas. Who knows, maybe the patrol superintendent is begging for a new facility anyway. Certainly organizers of the Arnold and QHC can bring lots of feedback on to what elements the Expo Center doesn't have that draws them away etc. Moody Nolan and EHT having a seat seems to imply larger infrastructure and master planning openess, with moody Nolan at least having experience with some denser concepts etc. I'm fully prepared to be underwhelmed and a lack of a public input phase is disappointing but more than anything, I'm ready to just see the report already.

December 8, 20222 yr New Plan Framework Unveiled for Fairgrounds Renderings and a presentation summarizing the recommendations show proposals for several new facilities, including a new town square, entertainment pavilion and entrance gate. Other parts of the 360-acre Ohio Expo Center property would be re-arranged – two new parking garages near the north gate, for example, would allow for an expanded camping area and more trees to be planted where there are currently parking lots. Also shown on one of the maps is a transit hub near East 11th Avenue, at the southern edge of the fairgrounds. According to a press release, Governor DeWine met with members of the Ohio Expositions Commission today to review the new document. As many as 20 existing buildings are recommended for eventual demolition in the plan, although there is no firm timeline set for any of the proposed changes – the release states that the framework “will be used by the Ohio Expositions Commission as a guide for future development over the long-term as funding can be secured.” Consultant Wellogy was hired to produce the plan at the direction of the Expo 2050 Task Force, a group set up by Governor DeWine in 2019 to develop a strategic vision for the site. “The renderings you’re seeing today represent the initial vision for the future of the Ohio Expo Center and Ohio State Fair, which will remain here in the heart of Columbus, its home since 1886,” said Governor DeWine in a statement. “The Ohio State Fair is something to be proud of, and we want to make the guest experience one that is comparable to – if not better than – other best-in-class attractions.”

May 10, 20232 yr Author Ohio Village & Ohio History Center Added to Historical National Registry Two iconic Columbus destinations were added to the National Register of Historic Places last week. The Ohio History Center, as well as the adjacent Ohio Village site, were both added to the registry on May 5th. Both sites are operated and managed by the Ohio History Connection. Constructed in 1970, the 53 year old Ohio History Center building is one of the city’s most prominent examples of brutalist-style architecture, designed by W. Byron Ireland. Ohio Village opened four years later, in 1974, featuring the historical replication of a small Ohio town to represent what life was like in the 1890s. June 7, 20232 yr Ohio History Organization Seeks to Establish Intertribal Cemetery to Bury Thousands of Native Ancestors The Ohio History Connection is seeking state legislation to authorize an intertribal cemetery to lay to rest the more than 7,000 Native American ancestors in the museum’s possession. The law, included in the state budget bill and pending approval of the Ohio senate, would authorize The Ohio History Connection to use six acres of its existing land in an undisclosed location to put to rest the 7,167 Native ancestors it holds in its collection. A portion of those ancestors were unearthed by professional archaeologists— including staff from the Ohio History Connection— beginning in the late 1800s. Others were excavated and later donated to the museum by amateur archaeologists and state residents who came across human remains while developing the property as recently as last year, according to the museum’s director. If approved, the legislation would be the answer that dozens of tribal nations with historic ties to the area have been seeking for years: how to rebury an ancestor as close as possible to where they were unearthed, despite their tribe’s removal from the area. “What we’ve heard consistently from our tribal consultations is that: their ancestors in our care lived their whole lives here,” said Alex Wesaw, the director of the Ohio History Connection’s American Indian Relations Division and a citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. “The common custom is for people to be buried, most often, close to where they lived their lives.” Ohio History Connection staff has been consulting with the roughly 60 affected tribes with historic ties to Ohio since 2016. The tribes were forced to relocate out of the state beginning in 1795—to what is now Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin— with the Treaty of Greenville that ended the Northwest Indian War and removed tribes from most of Ohio. “[The ancestors] would have never lived where the tribes are today,” Wesaw said. “So they have been asking for a place to be able to lay them to rest here in Ohio.” Although the History Connection could have established a cemetery under state law, the process would have required them to re-register with the state every year.

December 14, 20231 yr Crew to lease more state fairgrounds land Plans call for two more practice fields to be built for soccer team next to stadium "As the Columbus Crew celebrated its MLS Championship with a parade Tuesday, the Ohio Expositions Commission voted to approve leasing nearly 9 more acres it controls at the state Expo Center and fairgrounds so the soccer team can build two more practice fields adjacent to the Historic Crew Stadium. “The commission’s vote (Tuesday) will not only support our 2023 Major League Soccer Cup Champions, but it will improve fairgoers’ experience by creating an increase in available parking during the fair each summer.” The agreement increases the Crew’s leased area at the Historic Crew Stadium (formerly Mapfre stadium) by about 8.8 acres while preserving the rest of the Expo Center and the state fairgrounds property for year-round use. Construction of the new practice fields will begin early next year, and they are expected to be completed before the 2024 MLS All-Star Game, which will be held next July in Columbus. The Ohio Expositions Commission's decision to lease additional space at the fairgrounds to the Crew occurs as it is about to begin a $260 million in long-term, "unprecedented upgrades" at the Expo Center and fairgrounds as part of the state's Expo 2050 Master Plan." https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/local/2023/12/13/columbus-crew-to-lease-more-state-fairgrounds-land-for-practice-fields/71898109007/
