These are great, thanks @Geowizical. The aerial image helps immensely to get a sense of things, cause as you said the 'skyline' is not so recognizable to many. For Downtown, we can see a bldg and know what it is, not so much with UC!

Hey gang - wanted to share with the forum some updates in rendering capabilities as of this past weekend. Let's just say, things are getting a lot more realistic...

Using a new rendering system integrated into my Sketchup workflow I now have the capabilities to render out conceptual pieces comparable (but not currently meeting/exceeding) to that of your run-of-the-mill architecture firm. While the orange buildings of the past are - dare I say, iconic - I've always wanted to get into more realistic and informative architectural renderings, and this combined with my graphic design proclivities is just the first step towards that goal. My hope is that this workflow continues to serve as the sort of in-house public firm for forumers where y'all have a vested interest, so to speak, in the work being done, and where y'all can request both original concepts and projects in the works. Am I taking this too far? Maybe... but if it serves the greater good then it's all worth it in the end. Besides, who doesn't love being part of a fictional architecture/city planning firm lol.

Anyways, as a proof of concept, I finally got around to creating a specs-accurate Artisan at Circle Square in UC from scratch and upgrading the world model overall in various ways to get some sexy renderings. It was quite the time suck this weekend getting it all up and running but 110% worth it in the end:

Artisan1.png.3b115db4d026501c1fadea68aa9d7275.pngArtisan3.png.7baf4fc8771ad540af2fc587a622cc3c.pngArtisan2.png.3084344a5b4a5795ba5ea65e6f31cfeb.png

I hope to continue improving the capabilities and to keep providing some interesting thought experiments/designs/angles for you all to enjoy, adding to the sometimes limited number of renderings provided by the big guns. Circle Square is such a cool project and judging by these new renders it is going to have a skyline-changing presence in the Circle. This project can't get started soon enough!

If you have any questions about the renders, feel free to hit me up with those too - I'd be happy to talk about the process with y'all if you are interested. And as always, thank you so much all for your interest in these renders and continued support/encouragement!

-Ian

In the pipeline: The Artisan got me thinking... conceptually, might Wade Oval/Lagoon look like a mini Central Park in a decade or so given enough condos/apartment towers? Stay tuned! 🤫

Really amazing work!

My only suggestion would be to try and find a way to make the "unofficial render" watermark a bit more prominent. These screenshots are architectural firm quality to my un-trained eye and could easily be mistaken for an official render. I'd hate for any legal repercussions to come down on you or the forum. I may be off-base though... IANAL, hopefully someone with more professional experience could chime in on the legality.

  • Author

Not off-base by any means, it's a totally understandable point - something I would definitely be worried about myself.

I edited a bit, hopefully it's now a little more obvious that I don't work for FitzGerald (the firm responsible for the actual renders).

Edited by Geowizical

That's an interesting point.  It also may be wise to eliminate the proper name of the project and substitute something like "Residential Project at East 105th and Chester".  But I am not an architect or a lawyer either, so I don't know for sure.

First, thank you for sharing these - always a treat and waaaaaay better than my 2002-2004 era Photoshop jobs! 😆 Good question on the renderings and maintain that "just appreciating/being an architecture geek" boundary - if any of our resident attorneys have insight or know someone practicing intellectual property law, feel free to weigh in.

Bridging the RR tracks and Shoreway is not a new idea.  🙂  Nor is doing it getting any cheaper.  So the sooner done the better; and just about any version is better than none.

You don't often see the earlier rendering of Key Tower like the rendering you've shared. The architects revised the design to preserve the view of the Terminal Tower from the War Memorial Fountain and Mall A, which resulted in the more sheer facades on the eastern and western sides and bumped up the height to 948 feet (including the spire).

And a Cool “Inner Harbor” in that pre-Rock N Roll Hall of Fame rendering!

The rendering looks pretty good vs. what was actually built.  I wish I. M. Pei (aka I. M. Well Paid) would have tweaked the design of the rock hall when it was moved to the harbor to improve the appearance of the back side.  The new bridge being built across the harbor looks like it will be an eyesore.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I think the science center is one of the ugliest buildings in Cleveland; and it has almost everything to do with its cladding. I think with different cladding I would feel 100% different about it.

Would one of you who are great at doing renderings be able to put together something showing how DownTown CLE would look with the below towers in the skyline?

1- A 500ft Justice Center building(Either on the Huntington Park lot or it's existing lot).

2- A 550ft Sherwin Williams HQ building

3- A 647ft (original 54 floor) NuCLEus building

I think @Geowizicaland @Pleco are some of the UO renderings experts, I may be missing some folks.

This would be fun to see in general, but even more so now because there's some hope it could actually happen.

Thanks in advance, you all do great work!!!

If someone would be so kind as to post the plans for the original 54-story nuCLEus in the thread for reference I'd greatly appreciate it - that way I can make the most accurate version of it possible. Unless I'm mistaken I remember there being some sort of pdf or downloadable document from Stark with elevations, floorplans, etc. but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Thanks in advance!

How much detail do you need @Geowizical? I don't have anything more detailed than what is posted in the nuCLEus thread.

I can definitely just go through the thread in hindsight lol. Mostly I was looking for the side elevation view where it breaks down floors and heights and then the general floorplan. But I'll take a look...

Found it! Love doing a deep-dive on the beginnings of the nuCLEus thread haha

Just wanted to give a general PSA/rendering update including some points I've been focusing on the past week so y'all aren't completely in the dark:

Completed:

1) A city model upgrade on the whole with added roads, blocks, green spaces, water, rail lines, etc. for better overall visuals while ditching the outdated google maps overlay.

2) 647ft nuCLEus plans-accurate (mostly) model based on the original renderings (for @NR's skyline render request)

3) Bridgeworks plans-accurate model based on the updated renderings from a month or two ago - I hope to post some of those renders in another post separate to the @NR request.

To-Do:

4) SWHQ (@NR request)

5) Justice Center Building (@NR request)

6) General existing infill buildings in Warehouse District and Ohio City (including base-level massings for the Quarter, Church+State, The Dexter)

Future Plans/Ideas:

7) INTRO at Ohio City plans-accurate model

8) City Club Apartments plans-accurate model (if detailed floorplans for it even exist in the public domain).

Apologies for the delays - a little backlogged currently, but I'll try my best to push these out relatively soon!

Also, does this post help for City Club details? (Aug 23, 2020)

As promised, the Bridgeworks Renderings as something to peruse while I finish up the big skyline/nuCLEus render.

Not too many new angles to show that we haven't seen already, but nonetheless - enjoy!

**Pardon the slight drop in quality (I think it's just an UO upload thing). Also, the window brightness/reflectivity came out much darker than anticipated in the renders, so don't fret if the whole building looks menacingly dark lol.

I haven't visited this page in quite a while, but now see that folk have added in Lumen, Hilton, Beacon, and the middle version of NuCLEus to the Cleveland diagram.

It will be a joy to see new images added to the mix on the Cleveland page, whether fantasy posits or real moving-ahead projects like SW, Bridgeview, (hopefully The Viaduct,) City Club, Artisan, and more.

Whenever I do visit, this website becomes a total rabbit-hole for me.

Love that website! Of course, I know all about the cancelled Ameritrust and Progressive Towers but I never knew about the Erie Grand and One Lakeview - both spectacular looking big city towers. Imagine our skyline if those had all been built - wow!  Hopefully, we’ll be able to add SW and a pumped up Nucleus shortly.

Does the "fantasy" moniker mean the building is fake? I was under the impression the Lakeview apartment buildings and the erie grand hotel & tower were subscriber requests to the page given the language used when I clicked on their individual building pages... but I could be mistaken - nonetheless some very interesting designs for sure!

Edited by Geowizical

I think since it's basically just a fan page, members can draft buildings from scratch and place them on the timeline.  I don't know what the site's review process is for that.

You can adjust what you see with the filters at the bottom of the page.  The fantasy buildings aren't visible in the default view, but I selected the filter to include them because of the extra interest they add.  There are actual proposed buildings all over the site too, but for Cleveland Only NuCLEus ver. 2.0 is shown because a fan submitted it to the diagram.

I was originally just snooping among the fantasy towers to learn if anyone had crafted up some scale images of proposed Cleveland projects. Nothing really came up.  I don't think the Cleveland page is nearly as active as other towns on the site.  I'd maybe enjoy drafting up some images to post there and make the Cleveland page more complete, but don't have the talent/skills or time/patience to learn and make that happen

Here is the Skyline Diagram page filtered to only display completed structures in Ohio.  The site is a fun place to click-around &  kick the tires to view city skylines and projects.  It's possible to line up nearly every building across the globe and scroll through them all in order, tallest to shortest, starting with the Burj Khalifa.

City Club Apartments!

This was a really fun one to do - I'm definitely very fond of this building now after pouring over the plans and architecture, and I can't wait for it to get off the ground. And while I wish it were taller (like twice as tall lol), this will fill a big gap on Euclid and that's all that matters at this point! As you'll see, it blends in nicely with the surrounding heights, but will definitely pop against the other buildings given the whites and purples used in the cladding (no, the rest of the buildings in town aren't all white as I lead you to believe). Also, pardon the wacky shadows on some of the buildings - my program acts up a lot and I can't really solve it without spending my entire life in photoshop haha.

Anyways, enjoy!

Next Up: nuCLEus (with an asterisk)... technically nuCLEus is already done, I'm just hiding it in the renderings for a later date 😉...

So I guess technically, Sherwin Williams is next, and THEN I'll be able to push the skyline render with these three buildings. I probably won't do a justice center model unfortunately - the past week has drained my creative brain and I'm lost for ideas on that one haha. TBH I'm still not happy with my plan for SW either, but we'll see where it ends up. If y'all have any suggestions for that, I'll happily take them!

Happy to! although I would appreciate a reference photo you'd like it super-imposed onto. I tried looking through progressive field photos on google, especially ones from right field where one would see the SW tower, but couldn't find any good ones on my own lol

Tsk-tsk...should have built it on the Jacob's lot 😊

Maybe another vantage point at progressive Field will provide a better view of it.

Damn. I was hoping it would sit neatly in that gap between TT and P55!

Flying around my digital model it was very hard to find one, although I would say the best vantage point would be somewhere in section 304/504 (yes I looked it up on the seating chart lol). Here's what that would look like - literally everywhere else the tower is obscured by Terminal Tower, the scoreboard, or the lower levels where it is obscured by RMFH. Ah well

Hey, Geo. With the recent City Club news I’ve been wondering how visible this structure will be from the inner belt. Have you looked at this?

Thanks, @Geowizical. Hopefully there will be more tall towers popping up downtown in the next few years which will be visible from the ballpark.

Watching the Indians game from Pittsburg a few weeks ago, I was really impressed with how nice their skyline looks from the ballpark. I know their downtown is more compact than Cleveland which makes a big difference.

Yeah I hope so too. I'm kind of jealous of the Pittsburgh skyline myself tbh - while they only have 6-7 more buildings over 300 ft than we do, the pure density makes it look at lot more interesting. Just take a look at Pittsburgh downtown on Google Maps and tell me how many massive surface parking lots you can find haha. Anyways, SW and City Club are a great start for sure!

I have! At least until anything nuCLEus related gets off the ground, we should have a very nice view of CC peaking out of the skyline from both directions on the Innerbelt.
