Totally agree - its a nice homage to those turrett-style buildings we see throughout old Cleveland neighborhoods. Just trying to imagine what a patina of that scale would look like downtown lol.

Hey y'all, I figured I'd share quickly an update on why I haven't posted a rendering/massing in a hot sec:

My SketchUp model is finally going TRUE 3D. I'm slowly working through the process of cleaning up some real terrain data and merging it with my existing city model that sits on a flat plane... which we all are aware the terrain of Downtown Cleveland certainly is NOT. Hopefully this will lead to some better context for any future renderings y'all may wanna see (especially of developments like tower city that take place on a noticeable slope) 🤟

 

Should I've done this from the get-go.... perhaps 🙃

^EDIT: Replaced the image for the one with the actual buildings. Lol. All the buildings are at their right elevations - just need to finish the actual terrain now based on the underlying image... the hard part

absolutely fitting and very cool idea. aside from the crown, i think the four corners of the lower street level base of a tower would look iconic with cle style corner turretts. what a great and thoughtful homage that would be.

Quick project update!

 

Tasks completed:

• Waterway boundaries cleaned up
• 2D Map projected onto 3D Terrain
• Main Ave. Viaduct model added for context

To Do:

• Flatten out roadways where necessary
• Rebuild remaining bridges crossing the Cuyahoga (Hope Memorial, Detroit-Superior, Innerbelt, Fulton Road, lift bridges, etc.)
  • Including elevating highways away from terrain projection (I-90, I-77)
• Carve out tunnels for railroads under Tower City, etc.
• Remove artifacts from heightmapping for smoother and more precise terrain
• Redo 3D versions of Bedrock and Lakefront proposals based on new terrain
• Add existing buildings to fill in Ohio City and Warehouse District

Great post, thanks for sharing. When you see it from this angle, the Bedrock riverfront plan makes the city look MUCH larger, especially with those 500-ft buildings. Great synergy between the east and west ends of downtown. Will be fun to see if/when the lakefront, the former nuCLEus site, and the speculated ballpark village gets developed as well. 

Unless they have someone lined up to fill those 500 foot buildings, it's just speculation.  And I assume the nuCLEus site will be developed first.  I'd really like to see a 500+ foot building there.

I don't think they have definitive tenants yet, but I do think this is more than just speculation.  They amassed a ton of land, hired an international architect, are doing extensive due diligence and are going through the lengthy City approval and public review process for the Riverfront plan.  These are concrete steps towards a real development.  Doesn't mean it will happen, but I think it does mean there's some credibility behind this.   Bonus- Rocket Mortgage would be an ideal fit for one of those 500' towers.

 

Also- I see why Nucleus might be developed first, but If I were Bedrock, I would prioritize the Riverfront.  If they can get City buy-in for the infrastructure, this creates another 5 or 6 potential projects that will benefit their surrounding properties.  Nucleus is shovel-ready, but wouldn't really solve a lot of long term obstacles for Bedrock or the City.  But hey, I would love a 500' tower regardless of the site!

I feel bad throwing out yet another job idea at @Geowizical(or @dave2017etc)  but not so bad  that I won’t try it - this new pic from @MayDayin the SW thread would be great to show how the skyline would be affected by those two new 500’ residential towers we’re gonna get on the riverfront. 😉 
 

And the Bedrock Nucleus Tower.   And, obviously, SW.  Anyway- for your consideration and a huge thank you for all the incredible renderings…

According to this it was to take 30-45 days and be completed in 2023.  So maybe this summer?  I honestly have no idea if it’s still planned though.

This mural really is the final step in Public Square’s transformation into a real “place”

With ALL DUE RESPECT to the artist, I am not a fan of her work. I think it is pretty ugly. But she is a well respected artist and I will gladly accept whatever she comes up with.

I would let children with paint and crayons up there at this point.

That’s pretty much what her work resembles. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's a highly visible canvas, but also essentially a backdrop for a church steeple.  Whatever she does, I hope she's able to make her design work with, not against that steeple.

To be fair, while I'm not a fan of it either, a more representational artwork would probably draw too much attention to itself. A meaningless assortment of well selected colors will blend into the background and hopefully support the surrounding architecture. I don't want a blank wall to become the focal point from the square. 

yeah just adding a pop of color to a bland wall will drastically change the feel of the square. Not every mural needs to be the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel 😆

I asked about this on the Hotel's instagram and they said that this is actually part of the plan still (as of now!)

wow - I just looked at her art. You are right.  If you weren't told it was art you might think that it was damage to the building or even pollution stains.

I have been wondering if the artist can paint realistic-looking windows.

You know it's the kind of modern work that when seen elicits the response "Art?" "I can splash some paint just as well as that thing."

Putting it on a canvas is one thing, but putting it on the side of building doesn't seem appropriate.

Well at least they had the permission of the owner.   Still, I like it less than I like what they did to the bank building on Waterloo and that is saying a lot.

Why do I feel like a Superman mural was planned for the Standard Building.  Was that ever a thing or am I imagining it?

A mural of Batman and Robin climbing the east side of the Halle Building was a thing in the 1970s. The Wyndham hotel covered up that blank wall.

I’m sure the art appreciators on this forum would rather see something more dignified. Like a portrait of Bernie Kosar or a giant polish boy 

I'll take any art over a giant canvas ad for the Jack Casino or the Cavs or something like other parts of downtown. Not a fan of billboards like that

Sounds very Nimbyism to cry foul to their work. Only difference is the mural won't take away any parking spaces.

I was hoping for something a bit whimsical, not a depiction of a migraine.

if it happens the artwork will be a fine background style as any and colorful. 

 

also, colossal does a ton of work all around nyc so it will be well executed. hopefully it will be hand painted up there — thats always fun to watch even if its just advertizing:

same — she has b&w versions, but i expect this will be colorful. it should really brighten up that highly visible corner of ps.  the only issue could be if it’s too busy and doesn’t play nice with the old stone church in front of it. i’m sure she is well aware of the setting tho.

Man,  what's the expected lifespan for a south facing mural on a wall like this?    Maybe, someone can dial up SW and negotiate a deal on their best external paint and clear coat.   Whenever, I see a proposal similar to this, I try to imagine what it is going to look like ten years later. 

An array of paint sample cards would look better than her work - Im sure SW would be up for it.

good question. the stuff they put up around here seems to last an average of around six months or so for the most impressive big hand painted ads before the next one, but i dk how long they actually could last.
