I completely forgot about that version of Courthouse Plaza.  There was a 2 tower version about 15-20 years ago, as well.

Found this full page gem in a bin full of yearbooks and the like. From August 21, 1988 Plain Dealer. I was a 22 y.o. city enthusiast who was crazy to see this get built. Today, I'm thrilled to see SW finally start to fill in this hole that was started so many decades ago.

 

^Interesting---they gave themselves 4-5 years to build it. That's a long time--at least by today's standards.

^ It would have been nice to have another tall tower downtown, but dang, that was rather ugly.

Then and sill today, I think it's awesome. I like how the curved glass wall blends with stone to link the past with the future. The triumphant crown seems to pay homage to Clevelands mighty industrial history.

That design is much better than the images on the skyscraper-dot-com page, and if they used the correct materials it could've been nice. Either way, it would've been really cool to have that tower in CLE right now.... adding a 616' tower to a list with a 1,200', 950', 750' and 650' on PS... wow!

I liked the curved glass, but the other parts don't blend in very well IMO.  Seems like the floor plates in the tower would have been rather small.

They certainly went for height!

On the other hand imagine the glut of empty office space if this monster had been built. Don’t think SW would need to build new - there’d be plenty of  available space. 

I know design is subjective and that particular one does have a very 1980's vibe but I have to say I always thought it was a great look especially for such a prominent location. 

 

Another one of my favs was the never built very skinny structure that was proposed adjacent to the current SHW downtown offices. You know the one with the giant Cavs banner. The way it angled with Ontario St. seemed like it was enveloping you, welcoming you to downtown. Now all we have is another semi-finished building like the blank wall of the Standard or the two unfinished sides of the Federal building and what does that say but "We can't get our sh*t together."

Hard to tell what would have happened over the years. A project this size could have branched a new Cleveland timeline for better or worse. Maybe the added debt/long-term lease delays the merger or it never happens. Maybe Eaton moves into this building instead of moving to Beachwood.

I guess I don't have a problem with blank walls as there was usually a reason - either an adjacent building was there at one time and is now gone or a new building was planned but never built.  As for the Federal building, I think they just needed to bomb-proof those two vulnerable sides. It sure would be nice to see something built on the unfinished parcel of the Landmark complex.  Hopefully it will happen in my lifetime.  It's kind of embarrassing that it has been unfinished for over 90 years.

Naw, Jenga/Nucleus was ugly.   This would have been distinctive. Plus 1,200 feet.

I remember one architecture critic in their review, possibly in the PD, remarked that the Terminal Tower was getting a full -length mirror.

That happened in Minneapolis with Foshay Tower and it was actually a nice effect.

Will there be any angles where you will see the city club make any impact on the skyline? I know it is not that tall but was just wondering if you could pick it out from a certain angle.

I feel it’ll stand out pretty clearly from I-90

Well, if there are any angles from the south where the PNC Building is visible, you might be able to see it - but probably not from the north, east or west

Any chance we can see a teeny tiny bit of it from Progressive field?

Oh well, at least the construction crane will stand out for a while (as will the Bolivar Apartments' mobile crane). Too bad there may be a baseball lockout so no one outside of Cleveland will see it.

The view from the south - over RoMoFiHo - is better than expected however.

Good question - if anyone would have insight, it would be @KJPThat said, I'd rather see these on one of the lots closer to the core (minus the oversized plaza as you pointed out).

The unbuilt proposal for DFAS offices in the Flats East Bank. Given the Waterfront line shutdown, maybe a bullet dodged since that was supposed to be a selling point?

Hmm, a 20-ish story mishmash of facade treatments (office tower component of Stark's 'Pesht' project) or 616' of Sherwin-Williams Global Headquarters 😉

The Courthouse Tower on Lakeside had a pretty good shot of getting built if not for the political whims of Mayor White. John Ferchill was so mad about being denied that project that he vowed he might never build in Cleveland again.

What I can only succinctly describe as "Threading the Needle"!

Ended up using some of the textures from the official PC/SW materials, had to change some of the lighting angles/shadows to match and find the right perspective, etc. Photoshop-job is a little shoddy imo here and there but overall, can't wait for this view irl!

What I love about this view is the variety of colors and textures.  The SHW tower adds to it even if the design is uninspired.  
 

Does anyone remember this photo called "Cleveland 1996 skyline?" 

 

My grandparents had a large poster board sized image of this I assume they got from some councilman or something in the early 90s. It had a black background and in white was the skyline and all the new proposed buildings (Key, fifth Third, Ameritrust, Progressive, Tower City Phase II) along with existing buildings. 

 

Anyone remember that?

The top of that AmeriTrust tower was rather unsightly. I'm glad it was never built.
