I didn't see any designated place for my own, and didn't want to create an album for just my few photos, so here's a new thread for everyone.

This will be used for your own photos of the night sky that you want to share with everyone. If you have a large collection, feel free to share your photos in their own thread if you wish. If you just have a few random photos you would like to share here, do it!

Please don't just post photos you find on the internet. This should be UO user created. Thanks!

I went out on Friday 7/24 with a couple of friends to look for the Comet NEOWISE before it disappears for the next 6,800 years in August.

We went to Heritage Park in Colerain Township (Hamilton County) just on the other side of the Great Miami River from Stricker's Grove Amusement Park.

Without any cameras or binoculars, it is really hard to see the comet. A camera with a tripod is the best way of pinpointing exactly where the comet is. Binoculars are good, but they don't provide as sharp of an image. Once you find exactly which speck of light is the comet through binoculars or a camera, you can identify with the naked eye, but it doesn't look much different from other stars.

Here are a few photos I took with just a standard lens and a tripod. I'm sure with more advanced equipment you could get some more beautiful shots.

Hope you enjoyed this brief glimpse at the comet!

Good thread idea! I'll submit a deep space object that I worked on a few years ago.  M51 shot from south west cuyahoga county. I wanted to try adding more data to it from a darker location but haven't got around to it yet. This is about 20 subs at 30 seconds exposure each.
it's not great quality or detail at all (there is actually a smaller galaxy above this that isn't really visible here, you can look up good images on internet though).

awesome shots.

and good idea to make a dedicated astrophotogrpahy thread -- there are sky pics on scattered threads below, so good to put them all in one place i think.

where do you get your news and inspirations?

i follow a few space related sites you all would know or like:

the mighty apod

https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

r/space

https://www.reddit.com/r/space/

i get fraser crain's universe today emails on fridays - great for covid perusing

https://www.universetoday.com

and of course nasa and jpl websites and i even look at the junky space dot com site sometimes. ha.

photo by Chas Irish (speaking of the eclipse, it was largely a nothingburger in NYC in my opinion. Of course we were far out of the path of totality, but at 90% coverage I assumed it would be a lot darker than it was)

^ it really makes a big difference between even 99% and totality.

An eclipse junkie/author said it’s like the difference between making passionate love with your partner and kissing your grandma.

Some highlights (no pun intended) from the Summit County Astronomy Club (not my own, these were shared by others in the SCAC group because some of the people there had way, way better astrophotography setups than my little five-generations-old phone camera):

i heard it was 89% here, but even still it was much more noticeable with weird skies and a drop in temp than it was last time in 2017 when it was 72%. i made local tv for that one and got my 2min of fame, i was interviewed by ny1 lol.

Throwing some shade on Lakewood Park.  😎  Video of the crowd reaction by families gathered in the park around totality.

I did notice the drop in temperature. But where's that NY1 clip? I want to see it! lol

It seems that an eclipse junkie gets more of the latter ... 😜
