...that's Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin, for those who don't know.

I foolishly got up way too early today to deliberately watch the sun rise for probably the third time in my life.  I walked across Madison's isthmus to Lake Monona because geography is such that the sun wouldn't be rising over the other lake which is practically outside my window.  But no matter... it's a short walk.

Anyway, here's the scene.

This and another were the most cooperative ducks for photos ever!

There it is!

Just a wider shot.

And a parting shot as I walked away.

Just a few pictures of that dawn glow as I walked back home.

This is a new building, presumably residential although I've never actually looked to see what it is.  Looks like it's almost finished.

The Wisconsin capitol, of course.

James Madison Park, which is just down the street from me (it's the view out my window).  This is on the other lake, Lake Mendota.  Can't catch a sunrise here, but it's good for sunsets!

Thanks for the pics. I'm not one for new designs, but the residential tower is pretty cool (except for the top 8 feet or so I figure is covering some mechanical).

Wow - I'm a big sunrise fan...thank you!  Definitely gotta get up for sunrises more often than 3 times every 25 years!

Definitely dig the colors - too bad there weren't some high clouds to give you some of those kick-ass effects as well...you'll just have to keep trying!

Beautiful!

Well, I know that you are a heartier soul than I when it comes to getting up for the sunrise.  I haven't had a schedule that demands activity in the morning for quite some time now... rising before the sun is hard!  Yeah, some clouds would have been awesome.  At least there were those few cirrus clouds, though.  I'll settle for the ducks in the foreground this time.  Of course, the only reason I picked today was because I knew it would be clear- I'm not waking up if there's a chance of not even seeing the sun! (Plus it's either now or October to get the latest non-freezing-winter sunrise.)

At least I can always catch the sunset at a moment's notice.  Last time I did so was a couple of weeks ago, when there was still some ice on Lake Mendota:

Ink... I'm with you on that building.  There are a lot of modern buildings about that size in Madison and most don't thrill me, but I rather like that one.  When spring really comes I'm going to go take some photos of that neighborhood and have a closer look.  The last I'd remembered of it until today was its damn crane messing with my shots! :x

Very nice...there just ain't nothing as cool as a good sunrise or sunset shot...very nicely done!

And what better way to end this day than with a beautiful sunset? :-)

Had some nice clouds this time.

Finally, post-sunset.

Gorgeous sunsets, too!

Wow...those need to be framed and put on a wall...I like the colors in the last one the best, but the third one, with the huge reflection broken by the water - that's amazing.

I think the duck needs a quote here.  :-)

^He's looking for crack.

The former is a "duh" and the latter is yes, the duck.

Looking for crack?  It's not an Alabama leprechaun, you know.

Wow man those sunrise pics are amazing! What is so great about taking pics of the sky is that it's never going to look like that again so it's always an original piece of artwork.  I can't wait to go back to Madison in May. I want to take some pictures of downtown and all of the urban housing that surround the edge of the lakes. Madison is a really unique city. Is the height limit still in affect? Sucks that the city has no skyscrapers...although the architecture is still fantastic.

Wow, I've never thought about it that way.  You just blew my mind.

In response to the rest of your post, yes, as far as I know there's still a height limit.  Although I do like being able to see the capitol, I keep looking at various views and thinking how cool it would be if there were a real skyline.  By the way, you should send me a message when you're coming to Madison; maybe I know a good thing or two to take a picture of. :-) (Or maybe you know as much as I do.)

Haha yeah I amaze myself sometimes. I'm flying to Madison from CVG but I have to be at Milwaukee's airport the next day to go to ATL.  Then a week later, I'm flying back to Milwaukee, then driving to Southwest Wisconsin probably for a day, then I'll acquire a car and drive to Madison to finally be able to take some pictures. My camera isn't that great but it will suffice. If you know of some places that would be great; I've only driven around Madison a few times. I'm driving back home from Wisconsin so I'm going to stop in Chicago and Indianapolis on the way back and take pics there as well :) .

Cool, well if you want to meet or anything I'd be glad to... unless it's a part of May when I'm back in Ohio! (D'oh!)

  • 4 weeks later...

Beautiful pics

absolutely love the sunset shots....a welcome change from all of the buildings and cities.
