It's coming.  I remember it peaking mid-May through the first week of June.

Another reason not to trust chain pizza in Cincinnati. No wonder Domino's dominated there for so long.

My uncle dressed up in a cicada costume and was called Cicada-Man on the local news as part of a promotion for the Reds I think. I will see if I can find old footage or photos.

Circa third grade, the Snappy Cicada jingle quickly became our bus driver's least favorite song.

Yeah I was in third grade or so...I remember the first day the cicadas hit.  The teachers tried to get us to stop playing with them on recess that first day, but to no avail.  Within 3-4 days we had tired of them but there were still weeks to go.  I remember somebody discovering that they made a popping noise if you threw them against the pavement, not unlike a bang-snap.  But we got bored with that pretty quickly and it was soon the case that you had to play it cool around the cicadas or else you weren't cool.  Like if you even acknowledged them you were a nerd.

I remember going to the zoo in 2004 and the paths were just filled with cicadas. I'm kind of excited. It's been so long

I don't think they were as prolific in Columbus. I don't remember them at all in '87. Now 2004 in Washington D.C. that was out of hand!

What if they transmit the virus?

They were so bad in Cincinnati where I lived but I thought the peak infestation year was before 2004. I'm 34 now and I remember I was 14, working at the Losantiville Country Club that summer when Cicadas were EVERYWHERE. I think it was 2002. Just tons of them awkwardly having orgies all over the golf course green and smacking members in the face while they were in the middle of their drive! Okay, I rather enjoyed seeing that, as a caddy. I remember you had to drive with your windows up, otherwise they would fly into the car and hit you so hard it could cause a wreck.

Ryan, I can't imagine anyone being excited about cicadas. Eww.

They do have other years; they're just not as prolific in the other years. I just picked up some cicada skins off a tree last spring or the one before.

when i got married we first lived on northwood in columbus on the top two floors of one of those huge craftsman houses near high. our cat used to go out the window and sit on porch roof watching birds. one day he came inside and stood frozen in front of us stunned with the side of his mouth buzzing and buzzing. he finally slowly spit out the cicada at our feet. i guess you had to be there but it was the funniest sight.

During the 2004 swarm, I was in school and worked at a car dealership making sure the cars were clean and organized on the lot. People would take cars on test drives for ~20 minutes and come back with the fronts completely covered in cicada splatters. Luckily they were so big and juicy that they usually scrubbed off pretty easily compared to little gnats that seemingly embedded themselves in the paint, but the water buckets and sponges would get pretty nasty.

It's like how there's Oak Fest and High Fest but Palmerfest is the main one, X10.

Here in the DC area the cicadas are gone, but microscopic pyemotes, which dine on cicada eggs when available, are still around.  With the cicadas gone, they are now dining on us. Nasty bites; like but itchier and longer lasting than mosquito bites.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake
