March 23, 200916 yr Yeah, the DAAP thing is scary. Very scary. It's if Eisenmann himself popped in a couple of X pills, decided to draw using pastels and cocaine strips, played with a Rubix cube, watched Clockwork Orange, and eventually churning out the Mark of the Beast at the corner of Clifton and MLK Drive. I heard that the DAAP building was supposed to be covered in some stone, instead of painted all sorts of ugly pastel colors, but that UC decided to paint it because it was cheaper. Not sure if this is true, but I think it would have looked a lot better without the pastel. I think the exterior was originally supposed to be ceramic panels (like a White Castle!) but still pastel. I went to school in that dump for 6 years, I'm surprised it's still standing. Also, I think the lions are welcoming, not guarding. I once read somewhere that they are guarding when they face each other, welcoming when they face away from each other like Mick and Mack. Can't find anything online to back that up though.

When the old McMicken Hall was standing, the Lions did face eachother, but when they rebuilt it, they switched the lions.
March 23, 200916 yr I think the exterior was originally supposed to be ceramic panels (like a White Castle!) but still pastel. I went to school in that dump for 6 years, I'm surprised it's still standing. I can confirm that I'm fairly positive it was originally going to be ceramic tile panels. They opted for EIFS which was an up and coming material at the time, but hadn't really been perfected. That's why there is currently a lot of staining/mildew buildup on the north side of the building. Today, EIFS is used on something like 70% of commercial/industrial construction. The pastel colors were based on a favorite painting of Eisenman's, but I cannot recall what it's called. I'm sure Google would turn it up after not too long though. I actually like the DAAP building interior. Remember the complex is 4 seperate buildings built across 50 years, and the Eisenman addition did a good job of linking them all and providing some much needed common space.
March 23, 200916 yr It was also built during an era when everything seemed to be coming in late and overbudget.
March 24, 200916 yr Nice set. I was really impressed when I visited the campus. The way pedestrian circulation cuts through and between buildings was unique.
