July 30, 20213 yr How does ROC (isn't that Taiwan?) have such a high medal count? They only have like 24 million people.. They're ranked right behind USA. I suspect steroid usage... Edited July 30, 20213 yr by David
July 30, 20213 yr I think the Asian countries have more experience with maintaining athletic training during virus events in the modern era whereas Europe just stopped everything and got behind in that time.
July 30, 20213 yr I can't believe USA won for women's Tae Kwon Do... I watched that match. Tae Kwon Do at the olympics looks really goofy, due to the point system it's really hard to score by punching so they just never do it. I'm having trouble finding footage for big matches in combat sports like Judo and Karate that I want to see. Judo throws are beautiful to watch. It's not that easy to look up Olympics footage on Youtube. I wish there was a concise place to watch noteworthy video clips of the Olympics. There's just so many sports to keep track of and obviously not everyone is going to care about certain ones. I really enjoy watching gymnastics as well. It's weird how much better women are at gymnastics, particularly floor routines. Guys' landings are absolutely horrible, generally, compared to women's.

That really stopped people from practicing here and in other countries? I was wondering if in Taiwan it's a much bigger part of their culture to send kids off to training camps for various sports. For example, I know Thailand has really good Muy Thai fighters because kids grow up in training camps from the time they're 3 and compete in the brutal sport at a really early age because their parents can make money from it. They'll have 7 year olds fight on the under-card. A lot of people don't agree with that obviously but when a country is that poor, that's what happens. I'm sure the training camps are a lot different there than the ones celebrity athletes here spend hundreds of thousands a year to put on.

July 30, 20213 yr That's weird...when I googled 'ROC Olympics', it said "Republic of China" and specifically named Taiwan (which I guess is the name of the actual Island but only consists of 98% of their territory or population.) I don't understand, if they're banned for doping, why are they allowed to compete and get medals? That defeats the purpose of the ban... Nevermind. I see it's in the article you posted. July 30, 20213 yr That is the dumbest sh!t I've ever read in my life. They're allowed to compete as long as they're not representing Russia by playing the national anthem and having uniforms that say Russia... Even though ROC stands for Russian Olympic Committee. Yeah, that's a loophole from hell. That's ridiculous. Russians are notorious cheaters/dopers. I think a non-biased international anti-doping agency should directly obtain blood samples regularly on all of the athletes to look for things like free and total testosterone, HGH ranges and patterns as well as looking for the banned substances. Those samples should be under surveillance and their handling should be monitored/cross-checked by another independent agency. I'm sure there's been a lot of the ol' switch-aroo going on with samples. Edited July 30, 20213 yr by David
July 30, 20213 yr Also, I think we need to re-evaluate what sports are being played. Is anyone really that interested in Air Rifle Shooting or Equestian stuff? Badminton or (wtf?) Sailing? Taiwan's legal name is the Republic of China, because the old government that the communists overthrew in 1949 retreated to the island of Taiwan but kept the legal name Republic of China as a rebellion/dispute against the communists. So as Ram mentioned the Communist Party of China makes them compete as Chinese Taipei and there's all kinds of diplomatic pressure in the UN from the communists to not recognize Taiwan's existence. It's only a coincidence that you googled "ROC" and got info on Taiwan.

People should be called whatever they want to be called. I have a first and last name that is Japanese but I go by my middle name David and everyone honors that. Did you see that video of John Cena apologizing to the Chinese government for calling it Taiwan while promoting his film F9? If I remember correctly, in a previous video he made, he was just announcing that his movie was premiering in "Taiwan." Hyping the movie up and letting the Taiwanese know that they get to see it first. Pissing off the Chinese government when the movie studio makes a lot of money in the Chinese market put pressure on him to apologize. July 31, 20213 yr I heard the real reason that Simone Biles quit the finals to 'focus on her mental health' is that she's prescribed Adderall, a banned controlled substance in Japan. It's described as "ADHD medication" but lets call it what it is, amphetamines.

Just absolutely the highest quality posting. Well done. EDIT - https://slate.com/culture/2021/08/novak-djokovic-jerk-watch-olympics-tennis-racket-smash.html Quote Djokovic’s latest on-court meltdown came on Saturday in Tokyo, as he was competing for the bronze medal in men’s singles tennis. After losing a point to Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta, Djokovic got very angry and chucked his racket—for real this time—into the empty stands. Later on in the set, after losing another point, Djokovic destroyed his new racket by pounding it against one of the posts that hold up the net. Perhaps he suspected that these rackets were haunted or something; perhaps the power of Christ compelled him to fling and destroy them in order to exorcise their resident ghosts. Perhaps, though, Djokovic is just a sore-losing jerk. This latter thesis was broadly confirmed later on Saturday when, after losing the match to Carreño Busta, Djokovic abruptly withdrew from his scheduled mixed doubles bronze medal match that day, claiming that he had injured his shoulder (perhaps after violently assaulting that post with his haunted racket). Djokovic’s exit meant that his mixed doubles partner, Nina Stojanovic, was forced to forfeit the match and miss out on a chance for the bronze medal, since you can’t very well play mixed doubles by yourself. Another GOAT threw a tantrum and quit on his doubles partner - no bandwidth here has been spent on calling him a quitter. See if you can spot the difference. August 5, 20213 yr It has always fascinated me how the US media treats all medals as equal. ALl they talk about is the US leading the medal count, which I find to be a rather misleading statistic, especially when your Olympic contingent is the largest in the games. The US news reporting is certainly biased towards a total medal count, as apposed to a "Gold First" standard. This got me wondering how the US would fair under a couple of weighted ranking systems. First table using Gold = 3 points, Silver = 2 points, Bronze = 1 point. Seconds table using Gold = 5 points, Silver = 3 points, Bronze = 1 point. 3:2:1 5:3:1 Either way, as of the morning of 8/5 the US still has a nice lead, unless you subscribe to a Gold only standard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_medal_table Edited August 5, 20213 yr by Balkmusic

I would not say it is a propaganda type bias, but it may be rooted back in the days of the cold war when the Soviet and Eastern Bloc countries used to dominate the Olympics and they used their best professional athletes whereas the US was using younger ametuers who would not have been the best of the best available in the country at the time (think pre Dream Team). It is probably a legacy of that time.
