To be honest, with this much riverfront development, that beach on the Lakefront looks more and more useless.

I don’t see any relation.

Clevelanders need more access to the actual water. Swimming beaches and launch points (kayaks, SUP's, jet skis, etc) each serve a distinct purpose for that. That being said I can't picture anyone using the river solely for swimming.

Bedrock is proposing a space for kayaking without having an actual beach so it's possible.

I feel that Edgewater while popular is still not fully utilized and is easily accessible from both sides of town. Also I believe KJP mentioned it but I'd rather them reinvigorate Gordon Park to the east with a beach first versus here.

The lakefront can still offer a space for kayaking while still activating the lakefront with something else besides a beach.

But we can continue this conversation in the lakefront thread.

Hey we're gonna need all those beaches when our population hits 5 million. All those climate change refugees that relocate here are gonna need a place to cool off from their previous locals.

Demo for the George property went in front of the landmarks commission today, it’s 2 phased which I believe was mentioned before the front building with the billboard will remain until 3 replacement billboards are permitted across the city. Also they confirmed they will build a cafe per the legal agreement

Shoving ye spades into the leitir

By Ken Prendergast / August 25, 2023

Today was a hooley 175 years in the making. Hundreds of people celebrated today on the banks of the Cuyahoga River, across the waters from the lietir, or hillside where work is already starting to stabilize a slope on which Irish immigrants settled under difficult circumstances long ago. Today, their struggle is about to be memorialized with the $100-plus million Irishtown Bend Park.

A very exciting project for Cleveland

In addition to a 23 acre park that will be enjoyed by thousands for decades to come - it should provide wonderful new perspectives of the city that will literally change the way we see downtown. I think it will underscore that Cleveland is also a city with a riverfront, which has sometimes been under appreciated and under utilized.

If this doesn’t lead to new residential development adjacent to the park - I’d be very surprised.

Great work making this happen CLE!

This is also a big part why I'm excited for this project. I imagine those parking craters on W25th there will get gobbled up by some nice sized projects and Hingetown continues to be a hotspot of new residential buildings.

Some pictures I took from the event

My sense is that this will be THEE place to take visitors, and the go-to for residents, to take in the cityscape - and then meander over to the amenities of w25th st.   We don't have anything like it.  Public Square - maybe - but it's not a place to relax.  Voinovich Park has great views but is disconnected.

…The skill involved to put that ship through all those turns without making like the Ever Given in the Suez Canal.

Had to run to Joy Machines on lunch break and decided to take a peek:

Well if having a straight on view of downtown across a river valley has any appeal then THIS is the site. Build several midrises with balconies on the west side of 25th and they should fill up fast. We might even have a sighting of the notoriously rare Cleveland Condo.

Unfortunately as I was leaving the groundbreaking ceremony, I slipped on some mud near my car. As I fell, my left calf slid across a metal strip at the bottom of a Metroparks trailer. The 7-inch gash went down into the muscle. My wife rushed me Lutheran Hospital ER where I got 20 stitches and a pair of crutches for the next two weeks. I am VERY lucky that it missed an artery. Ah, the things I do for NEOtrans....

Ken, Hopefully you can relax in the future park with a higher appreciation of the obstacles overcome to bring it to fruition, including now this one. So glad it wasn't worse.

My friend Mark Schwinn took this photo of the start of work on Irishtown Bend Park. This was the view Sept. 14 from the Red Line train bridge over the Cuyahoga River and into downtown Cleveland.

Sounds like a UO meetup, 5 years from now.

Looks great, it’s not exactly clear but it would be great if they had spots for boats to tie up so they’d be able to walk through the park to w25 or the restaurants on Detroit

Is there enough room? Maybe one deep. But how cool would it be to dock there and then be a able to walk up the hill to all the new places to eat that take advantage of the view.

Wow, those look really nice. Here's to hoping the finished product looks like the designs.

On a side note, this also gets me really excited for the proposed pedestrian/bikeway path on the subway platform of the High Level Bridge that Ronayne is pushing for. I believe that would make this park much more accessible for people who work/live downtown, and vice versa.

Its very accesible already for people downtown....we just use the bikelanes already on the bridge.

Agree on the biking portion but the walking experience is pretty horrific from garbage, deteriorating surfaces, and lack of a complete street feel particularly lack of trees or something to shade them from a sun on a hot day the bridge is bad for pedestrians but agree pretty good for bikes one of the safer places when riding east

Something else that I was thinking about: both Irishtown Bend and Bedrock's riverfront development are planning to build amphitheaters. These are in addition to the nearby Jacobs Pavilion, although it hosts a wide variety of events. It begs the question: Is it viable to have that many outdoor venues within that close of a vicinity? Perhaps one (likely Bedrock) can host larger attractions while the other can serve more as a community gathering area? Just some food for thought.

As long as one is suitable to host the Cleveland Orchestra for outdoor concerts (like the Hatch Shell in Boston) the more the merrier [emoji846]

I don’t see these proposed public space amphitheaters competing with an actual concert venue like Jacobs.

Are they intended to?  I see them as the equivalent of the steps at Lakewood Park - a nice place to sit.

If I recall correctly, a guy making a presentation I saw online used the Lakewood Park steps as a comparable example.

Took the 51 in today, they're adding the barbed wire hangars to the fences on W25. I get that there'll be a lot of equipment down there but barbed wire seems like a stretch. If folks want to get in cutting the fence is a lot easier than climbing.

THIS is a world-class park. Worth the entire read.

They have thought of everything and have done a great job with each individual element.  This is going to be a gem.  The only thing about which i am curious is the path lighting, as they don't seem to be emphasizing that in the renderings at this time, unless I am missing it.

Completely agree with the above reviews, I especially liked the W25 complete street slide. That street is a perfect candidate for a dedicated and segregated bike lane.

New fencing up, hopefully some nice renderings will pop up after it’s approved on the fencing

Just keep in mind that it’s not a part of the project…but a hopeful vision for a separate one

Wait until you see the vision for the land across the street
