You’ve been breadcrumbing this for a while now. Lutheran lot high rises? With condos?

THIS is a world-class park. Worth the entire read.

I apologize for this being off-topic, but do you (or anyone else) know where I can view the Riverview Tower remodel/renovation that was referenced in the slide deck? I’d be interested in seeing those.

Cannot wait for this! That presentation got me all excited! And imagine those renderings but in the Fall time 😍

Definitely will be spending tons of time here.

Like @HtsguyI also would have liked to see their plans for lighting.  And a fountain would be really neat too

^Awesome- it's been a while since we've had...

@KJP  do know one way or another whether RTA has the funding for the West 25th transit project?  As referenced above, that could be/is an important element of the park project-although separate from it- especially the narrowing of the street as it reaches Detroit.

I think they have some of it. I'll have to check.

Can you at least tell us if it is a "vision" or a "project"?

Absolutely- Irishtown Bend has the potential to profoundly change the “feel”and perception of Cleveland - (especially when considered from the west side) -from an former industrial town that doesn’t know what to do with its abundant natural resources - to a city beautifully redefining itself by providing a World class “urban park” that tens of thousands will enjoy on a regular basis.  A few of my favorite slides from the presentation-

I heard Lutheran is jealous of SHW and wants to construct a 2 story welcome center/pavilion on those lots. 🤣

As long as it is more of a project than "vision" I'm fine with it. We have enough "visions" for this city right now (Ballpark village, Lakefront, riverfront etc.). I would love small consecutive projects because they lead to bigger impact over time.

As someone who writes "vision" documents for work, I hate vision documents.  The more projects the better.

i took that to mean an actual project for now — and with plans for more. we’ll see!

Why don't we redirect this to the general Ohio City thread? But it will almost certainly need its own thread.

Nothing like a nice afternoon stroll along the river in some 4" heels....

Except that light is from the east (ie early morning).  There's never going to be crowds down there to see the golden hour shown in the renderings.  It'll likely be cloaked in shadow from hillside.

Watching the presentation. Michelle Anderson "serious concern" about lack of parking for the park is SO frustrating. She has no place on this board.

To be fair, Ohio City does need a public parking garage. As I understand, this is a subject of focus for decision makers at the City.

^^My head starts to hurt so much whenever she starts to speak.  Especially when the issue is supposed lack of parking.

I’d argue there’s plenty of parking across the river people can walk across or you know park in the West Bank ocean of parking lots. This should be the lowest concern though that’s crazy, this is one of the most walkable neighborhoods and we’re talking about parking for a park

The city should have built a parking garage on the east West Side Market lot years ago.  They still should do it and get a developer to put housing on top.  Oh yeah...no $$$.  Somebody figure it out.

Maybe KJP will have an update for us later that maybe adds a garage to the Lutheran parking lots  among other things hopefully

She needs to go work for the Independence, OH Parking Haven board.

^ Honestly more than half of this board really did not impress me with their questions or comments. It seems like almost none of them reviewed the material prior to the presentation. Hopefully they are completely ignored by the park designers. Most of their comments were just insert my pet idea here, no reference to the proposal, just have you considered completely unrelated idea x? Sigh...

Going back to how fantastically well detailed that presentation is. I really want to highlight this corner of the proposal.

Screenshot_20231002-203646_1.png.3161c7156d97dd3060aeeb277398da89.png

I think it fits a great job showing how much right they've put in, and I have a few questions and comments of my own.

First, I love the idea of trying to get the boardwalk under the two bridges! Is it practical or the most cost-effective thing to do? Maybe not, but I, like many people, like being able to walk uninterrupted by the water for as long as possible. These kind of silly, not exactly practical, pedestrian options are what make it a park with trails, not just a practical transportation link.

I am curious about what exactly a restroom and entry pylon is though. I think the idea of getting small public restrooms is a good, though I'm admittedly concerned about how clean and well maintained this is going to be. Does anyone have examples of where this has been done before and what it might look like? How big it will be, etc?

I also love the slide idea. Great use of the space.

Adding the stairs to West Side Market is also genius and not getting enough attention. This kind of small connections make a huge difference. We need more of this, connect the nice areas together. Add some nice rope lighting or something and these stairs could be beautiful in and of themselves.

Tldr: hopefully the planning commission is entirely ignored and we just get this plan.

Nothing says environmental restoration better than a parking lot right next to our region's most important watershed!

EDIT: To add a comment to my sarcastic remark... I don't live in this area, but also don't see the need for more parking? In bigger cities, if you drive in from somewhere else you park where you can and figure out a way (walk, cab, bus, etc.) to get where you need to go.

Serious question. How do people get appointed to these Boards? Is there any kind of criteria i.e design or architectural expertise? Are they political appointees. Are they paid, full time positions or part time with a stipend?

I mean, Hoopple's is right there. Just pop in and use their restrooms. Trust me, they are 1 million times better since they remodeled them, what, a decade ago now? Rumor has it you can still hear the ghost of Glen Schwartz chastising the patrons.

Does the current WSM market lot ever get full? It’s empty like 75% of the time

Hard to find anything to criticize or improve from this proposal. If I squint, there are only three things I would suggest:

1. Lightning - not just for safety reasons, but also for decorative purposes. For example, have lighted areas synced to the colors of Terminal Tower.

2. Artificial Water Features - there will be plenty of natural water features with the river so close, but fountains are ways to engage the visitors, help suppress unwanted sounds and wildlife interact with them.

3. Public Art - there needs to be dozens of public art opportunities in this park. Preferably interactive ones if possible.

I also agree that public amphitheaters are rarely used and are an un creative way to fill up space.

Call me crazy, but man-made lightning in a public space sounds dangerous.

We need to energize this space... really make it an electric place to be.  It's shocking to me that this idea doesn't strike you.  Personally, I get a charge out of it.

OK, I'm sure I'm wearing out my welcome.  I better bolt.

Watt are we talking about?  We have the capacitor to be better.

@ragarcia, I agree with the first two of your “squint-eyed” suggestions, but wholeheartedly disagree with the third. Where else can a park goer sit down to take a break, people-watch and get a spectacularly unobstructed view of the skyline? These will be immensely more popular than the Solstice Steps in Lakewood, for locals and tourists alike.

You wholeheartedly disagree with local art? Nowhere in your mind you can find it possible for some art and some benches to coexist?
