April 26, 20241 yr Thanks @GISguy!! Irishtown Bend work to barge in on river traffic By Ken Prendergast / April 26, 2024 In the coming weeks, the U.S. Coast Guard is expected to establish safety zone requirements for the barge-based installation of steel-wall bulkheads along the edge of the Cuyahoga River at Irishtown Bend in Cleveland. Those requirements will likely result in the daily closure of the river channel to commercial shipping for hours at a time but leisure and recreational boating is not expected to be significantly affected. April 27, 20241 yr Sounds like a good way to get the work done without affecting river traffic totally.
May 6, 20241 yr When are they tearing down the abandoned billboard building on the corner of Detroit? Wasn't the deal on the property made a long time ago at this point?
May 6, 20241 yr What stage of development is this project in? There doesn't appear to be one piece of construction equipment in any of the pictures.
May 6, 20241 yr I think part of the deal to finally acquire it from the absolutely lovely owners of that building was the city approving 3 new billboard locations for them. 2 have been approved so far.

May 8, 20241 yr Not quite that long - this is the project timeline which has us ready for park construction in August of 2025.

It seems to me that it started in Aug ‘23 and ends in Aug ‘25. Is that not exactly within the upwards of two years range? Anyway, thanks for the graphic and hopefully they can break ground in the park even sooner than prognosticated as they seem to be working really hard on this unlike the slow as molasses work (or mostly not) they did with the red swinging bridge.
May 12, 20241 yr Doesn't the actual park have a long way to go funding wise? If I recall correctly they have only raise about a third of the cost (stabilization work is fully funded).
May 12, 20241 yr As of March, about $19 out of $45 million has been raised. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

June 13, 20241 yr I just realized from the photo in the post above how much the Detroit Superior Bridge closely resembles the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Our architectural treasure deserves more respect as a significant local landmark and should be dramatically lit at night. The lit bridge would also reflect nicely in the new SW Tower.
June 13, 20241 yr Us old folks remember the 10 years (?) or so after the 1996 Bicentennial when EVERY bridge in the Flats was lit up. And so was I.... A great time to be alive!

When I was younger, someone told me they were designed by the same person. I can't find anything about that with a quick Google search, so I'm guessing I've been believing a lie for like 25 years haha.

There was a huge Reddit thread about the similarities from the two about a year ago. I’ll have to try and dig it up.

A great time to be alive! I know we have a ton of projects that need funding and money is always tight but man, those bridges are so striking with the colored lights. I've mentioned this before but in the grand scheme of things LED lighting is cheap and the bang is definitely worth it. If some organization wanted to fund lighting up the bridges it would probably pay for itself just by generating additional visitor spending in the community. I don't think any city in the country has the collection of bridges we have. Imagine them all lite up. Who wouldn't want to see that?
June 13, 20241 yr Someone other than the city would have to be on top of the maintenance because currently our record is abysmal. Even the Guardians of Traffic have been challenging to keep lit.
June 13, 20241 yr I wonder if a corporate or institutional sponsor (GE, Progressive, SHW, Cliffs, Bedrock, etc.) might consider covering the cost of lighting and maintaining the project in exchange for naming rights and other marketing opportunities? The impact on tourism and riverfront investment could be huge. Especially with the increase in cruise ship traffic and tourism in general. I remember having dinner with my wife on the patio at the old Watermark restaurant when the bridges were fully lighted. To say they were spectacular would be a huge understatement. Visitors were in awe of the view. I was so proud of my town. Thanks for posting this incredible photo memory, @cadmen
June 13, 20241 yr ^ @Cleburger gets the kudos for the posting but l'm willing to ride anyones coatails if we can get some lights lol.

June 13, 20241 yr Yeah, I remember being there that snowy day when I was younger and.... oh wait, I'm not THAT old! Brief reference to Irishtown Bend funding in this piece.... August 29, 2024Aug 29 Sorry for the poor pic but wanted to ask if anyone knows what this crane is doing out there? It's been out there all week started at teh south end of the ITB project site and now has worked its way up to the north end now.

September 1, 2024Sep 1 Where are people going to park that want to visit the park when it's done?? I wonder if parking will be charged. Edited September 1, 2024Sep 1 by jbee1982

My guess is either the West Bank of the Flats or in the Westside Market lots. It will be connected to both. I really hope they don't add parking along W25th.

Between on-street parking, bike lane and wide sidewalks, it’ll be a very nice urban and pedestrian friendly street. Having said that, I agree that on-street will be very limited and the huge bulk of it will be on WSM and West Bank.

But part of that plan also talks about almost 1,000 spaces across the street in a mixed use development in the huge Clinic lot, which is a long ways away. So who knows what will actually happen.

September 25, 2024Sep 25 ^ Fantastic. The linked video is worth a watch! Plan looks basically the same as I remember, only change I notice is subbing out a half basketball court with a climbing (bouldering) wall. I approve. Mostly you should just watch it because it's gorgeous! I'm excited for this park!
September 25, 2024Sep 25 ^ what a great video. First time seeing it and it definitely got my hyped up for this project even more. Can't wait
September 25, 2024Sep 25 So as of @KJP's April article, stabilization was fully funded and $19/45 mil was secured for the park. With this additional funding the park now is at least $29/45 mil, let's say two thirds. Has there been other funding reported on that's come through or at they still ~$15 mil short?

It does seems unclear how close they are with this fed grant. The press release mentions matching grants but were those matching funds already anticipated and included in the running total you have? KJP? “…The ORLP funds are matched by $10.8 million from LAND studio, which includes generous support from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation, the State of Ohio, the George Gund Foundation and other project donors.”
September 26, 2024Sep 26 Still trying to figure that out. It appears they're at about $30 million -- more than halfway to their goal. With each new bit of funding they raise, they're able to add more features to the park. The basic grading and seeding plus trails, amphitheater, overlook plazas, picnic areas, boardwalk, etc are now funded. Irishtown Bend Park gets $10.8M federal grant By Ken Prendergast / September 26, 2024 With each new donation and grant, sponsors of the planned $45 million Irishtown Bend Park in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood move closer to their fundraising goal. And today, they moved a lot closer with $10.8 million awarded by the National Park Service’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) Program.
