West 25th transit plan to give development a lift By Ken Prendergast / October 14, 2021 City Planning Commission approval is expected tomorrow for a comprehensive plan to enhance public transportation service along the busy West 25th Street corridor between downtown Cleveland and the Old Brooklyn neighborhood. The proposed 25Connects bus rapid transit project would speed up Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) buses by 10-20 percent, tapping federal transit funds to redesign the street and create bus-only lanes similar to the HealthLine along Euclid Avenue. GCRTA is undertaking 25Connects with design assistance from Stantec Inc. of Edmonton, Canada and Seventh Hill LLC of Cleveland. October 14, 20213 yr This plan looks awesome. Signal prioritization is the last piece to make it ideal BRT. I think they should connect this to the HealthLine and make it one long BRT. This would connect the 3 main hospitals, plus the Old Brooklyn Metro, plus Lutheran. That’s a real HealthLine. It would have outstanding ridership and would merit extremely frequent service around the clock. Would it be that much more to extend it across the bridge and make that connection? When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

It would also help connect main Cleveland tourist attractions including museums, Severance, and the Zoo.
October 15, 20213 yr I'm torn - because on the one hand, the plan looks beautiful and is most certainly an upgrade! On the other hand, I wish we'd start planning for some sort of street level light rail in the infrastructure. It's sorely needed. But again, this is a definite improvement so I don't mean to poopoo the idea

Of course they won't spend the money for the substructure and additional concrete etc, but the station infrastructure could be used?
October 15, 20213 yr This'll be pretty great, I had spoken with some folks from Cleveland Planning complaining about lack of safe infra on W25 when it comes to biking, hoping that this helps calm traffic a bit. The street is 25 and designed for 55 as is, hope the FHA is good with eliminating lanes and the speedway aspect of W25/Pearl
October 15, 20213 yr I love the bike lanes! More of those please! That said, the RBT seems like a compromise that might be worse than either end position. A 10-20% time reduction doesn't seem like it's worth eliminating a lane of traffic, at the very least I'd like to see a traffic study. That's a twenty minute trip taking 16-18 minutes for perspective. A lot of people on here are talking about signal priority. Assuming that could result in a truly substantial time savings it seems like a better option than what is pitched. (Any estimate?) I'm not convinced the current BRT is worth it over just having normal traffic lanes, or even just larger sidewalks. I'm sure this won't be a popular opinion, but if I'm thinking it, I'm sure someone else is.

Signal prioritization AND dedicated lanes (AND proof-of-payment fares) are ALL critical to true BRT and making this the best it can be. The only thing the extra traffic lane does is encourage speeding, which drastically increases the risk of death and injury to pedestrians and bikers. And I agree those bike lanes look awesome and are a great part of this project. When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

I'm not sure you all understand how much "proof of payment" looks like "Papers, please" to irregular or prospective riders, and how objectionable that is to many.

This is the way transit works in first world countries. Going faster is more important than people not being initially comfortable with the fare collection methodology. Proper BRT will be faster than driving once you factor in parking. People will ride it. It absolutely requires good, clear signage at stops and a good mobile app experience. However, when it is at ground level POP is probably the way to go. 9 minutes ago, E Rocc said: I'm not sure you all understand how much "proof of payment" looks like "Papers, please" to irregular or prospective riders, and how objectionable that is to many. Having proper signage at fare machines helps alleviate people's apprehensions. A simple sign that say "Please retain transit ticket for inspection for the duration of your ride" works fine.

Then you probably won't like traveling on transit in much of the free world. January 25, 20223 yr Author FYI.... GCRTA's 2022 capital budget has $21 million in it for construction of the 25Connects plan. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I would be surprised if it was already designed an engineered, however the $21 million is close to what RTA spent ($20 million) on the Enhance Clifton project. March 18, 20241 yr I haven't heard much about 25connects in a while. Every time I see renderings of Irishtown Bend Park I realize how big of a step forward for West 25th this will all be. Anyone have any updates?
November 19, 2024Nov 19 Author FYI... Tomorrow 11/20 is the MetroHealth Line Bus Rapid Transit Community Open House at St Patrick Parish 3602 Bridge Ave. Start Time is 5:30PM and will go till 7:30PM Clevelanders for Public Transit is looking to push for Bus Lanes along the entire corridor, Signal Priorty, and Off board payment with all door boarding to name a few things. We would like to see RTA push for a BRT standard across its entire network inline with ITDP Standards and Guildlines. We hope to see as many riders there as possible to show RTA and the City of Cleveland we want better transit! Would love to hear their comments on the lack of signal priority and 5 minute interval buses on the existing Healthline and why the W25 Metrohealth line would be different. Especially concerned about the W25 Lorain West Side Market choke point. It is impassable now can imagine the BRT being adversely impacted without specific solution.
