July 16, 200816 yr Can you imagine how nice this block will be with residents? I pray they are lining up retailers while planning the apartments.
July 16, 200816 yr I SO need to check my MegaMillions ticket when I get home tonight... that looks like it'd be a SWEET address...
July 16, 200816 yr Are we SURE that we like that they removed the black panels? ;-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 16, 200816 yr Give me back the black panels please! Whoever decided to cover that old dumpy looking building was a genius! :bang:
July 18, 200816 yr Can you imagine how nice this block will be with residents? I pray they are lining up retailers while planning the apartments. I just hope they can hold on to the Shoe Town Outlet through all that construction... And wow, I had no idea that the "tower" addition was a go in phase one. It would be wild if this one happened before 515!
July 18, 200816 yr ^Not to be negative (ok I guess I am being negative) but my grandchildrens weddings will "happen before 515" (and I don't have any kids).
July 18, 200816 yr Not to be perverse, but I sorta imagined you could do something with the black paneling that would look cool....
July 18, 200816 yr ^Someone watched Project Runway's premiere this week. Something like that could have been cool, but I think Mr. Mann has plans for that facade judging from the elevations.
August 25, 200816 yr Sorry to bring this thread back for this, but... The other side of the Harkness buildings are notably ornate as well; I wandered back there today and it's interesting what still exists... even if it is being used as a loading dock (the portions enclosed by Huntington Bank only accessible via alleyway on chester). Any condo with windows facing the other side of euclid ave could have some promise, especially if that area could get spruced up a little bit. If anyone is walking past, check it out.
August 25, 200816 yr The back is quite interesting, and the reason it was all the cast iron ornamentation is because the alley you were walking in was a street that connected E12th and E9th before the Huntington Building was built, marooning the street and the incredible John Hartress Building. That poor building really was abused.
November 18, 201014 yr Investors plan $55 million hotel project in historic Euclid Ave. buildings Didn't know where to put it please move it if there is a more appropriate thread CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An out-of-state investor group plans to open a hotel on Euclid Avenue, in a $55 million project that could eliminate a dead zone in downtown Cleveland. JHB Hotel LLC, an entity tied to investors in New York, California and Colorado, expects to buy the John Hartness Brown Building at 1001-1021 Euclid Ave. and the neighboring building at 1101 Euclid Ave. before the end of the year. The vacant properties could be plucked from the early stages of foreclosure, thanks to a surge of interest in hotels to complement Cleveland's planned medical mart, new convention center and casino. 0Share 0 Comments Those large projects, more than $1 billion worth of development, have sparked a hospitality race. Real estate experts say only a few hotels -- ones that secure financing first -- will be built. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/11/investors_plan_55_million_hote.html
November 19, 201014 yr ^ I was hoping they'd end up apartments but I didn't see that happening anytime soon. This is great to hear though! This should definitely add some life to this part of Euclid Avenue. Hopefully they can do okay with the retail part. Im not sure what I think about making the front of the one building an entrance to inside parking though. To bad that just can make the drivers go through the alley which is accessible from east 12th street
November 19, 201014 yr And here it is. Mann's plans never materialized. Public records show he owes more than $346,000 in property taxes on the buildings. Cuyahoga County filed to foreclose on the properties this year. The tax delinquencies must be resolved before JHB Hotel can take possession of the buildings and begin construction, Whiskeman said. I feel like a lot of these announcements are premature. We always end up feeling like things are 'delayed' interminably because there isn't actually a deal yet. Still, it's good almost-news.
November 19, 201014 yr ^Yeah, but would we have to post about here if we didn't get these kinds of reports? Sounds cool. Can't wait to hear who the operator might be. If we get a hotel here and the Kimpton in the Schofield, the gap between 668 and PHS will be narrowed signifigantly. And narrowed with some good quality too.

July 9, 201113 yr As far as I can tell this is the fist time the name "Westin" has been associated with this project.
July 9, 201113 yr ^Yeah, I was thinking the same thing but thought maybe I just wasn't remembering. Interesting. Really would be a great addition to Euclid.

I called a friend and as of now, there is no indication of a Westin in a repurposed building for Cleveland. I'll update when I get more info.
July 9, 201113 yr I love these buildings. The only thing im scared of is the plan to demolish a storefront and turn it into a parking garage entrance. Cant they use the alley in the back? Spruce it up a little lol. But really, we should be going away from putting garage entrances and exits on our major streets, especially Euclid Avenue.

July 9, 201113 yr I inquired about this stretch of buildings to clean up the fronts and install art projects. Not much luck in contacting anyone to get us in there. But the plan would have made this stretch look 100% better in the interim. This project is now called "Adopt-a-Storefront" It would be such a more pleasant scene to walk past, until something is done with the structures. They have sat like this for too long to not have such a simple thing done...free. We will still try.
July 9, 201113 yr Thanks EC for your diligence to downtown. RE John Hartness Brown This from a June 29, 2011 Ohio Dept of Development press release http://www.development.ohio.gov/newsroom/2011PR/June/8.htm This from an early 2011 City of Clevleand Dept of Economic Development (scrolling down gives detailed info and a rendering of the project) http://www.city.cleveland.oh.us/clnd_images/ED/PublicNotices.pdf
July 9, 201113 yr WHOA...I had no idea so much rehab and partnership. And, this quote is my favorite: "The adjacent non-historical building located at 1101 Euclid Ave is proposed to be included in the redevelopment plan so that no vacant buildings will remain on the north side of Euclid Ave from Public Square to Playhouse Square (at East 17th Street) once this project is complete.”
July 9, 201113 yr This is good news. I skimmed through the information. When is this beginning on these string of buildings, and are they demolishing any of them? I hope not, the rendering did not indicate that.
July 10, 201113 yr No demolitions have been proposed. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 10, 201113 yr That's good.. Just curious..what is under the black/dark brown glass? This was probably the least ugly siding of all the siding placed on old buildings... But is there any photo with the original look?

That descriptions makes the project sound better and better, IMHO. I think I'm even OK with the garage entrance in the easternmost storefront (the building whose facade is going to be completely rebuilt in any case), because, as the description notes, it means not having to install a cheesy canopy or cut into the sidewalk to provide vehicular access to the better buildings in this group. Why K&D didn't want to do this with the old Dollar Bank building I'll never understand.
July 16, 201113 yr ^Well, this stepwise procedure has to be completed first. The latest... State Controlling Board approves CORF grant for John Hartness Brown buildings. In this link to the Controlling Board, the JHB project is at #46. Clicking on DEV0101638-12, it shows this was approved at the 7.11.11 meeting https://ecb.ohio.gov/Public/ShowAgenda.aspx Evidently funds will be released this Fall.
September 1, 201113 yr Possible signs of progress: 1. On my walk through the Statler parking garage today, I noticed a new sign on the glass door that leads from the Statler garage into the building next door that is slated to be the garage entrance for the JHB project. The sign states something to the effect of: "The building has been sold. Any cars parked in this area will be towed." 2. A large van was parked on the sidewalk in front of the building closest to the Statler. Two workers were inside the building hanging large sheets of plywood. Here's hoping something is finally happening on this moribund stretch of Euclid.
September 1, 201113 yr Thanks heightsfan. Please keep us updated. EDIT: this has easily got to be the most welcome activity in downtown Cleve at this time. Hopefully work has started here in earnest.
November 5, 201113 yr Can anyone tell me the developer/owner of the Hartness Buildings? I want to contact the owner to set up a community service project to clean it up a bit (I am a City Year alumni and am sick of seeing the City Year logo surrounded by dirt and vacancy at 1015 Euclid). I checked the Cleveland Zoning GIS and it says it's owned by 3M, LLC., but I cannot find anything about them online. Thanks!

According to the business listings at the Ohio Secretary of State's website, the statutory agent of 3M REALTY LLC is another company (owned by Fred P. February 21, 201213 yr Quite a bit of activity (relatively speaking) at the JHB buildings lately. Lights have been turned on, ventilated plywood on a number of windows, boxes of supplies set up inside and workers doing some sort of demo.
February 21, 201213 yr I cannot recall what is suppose to go in here now. Is it still suppose to be a hotel or is it going to apartments or a combination of the two?
February 21, 201213 yr I really want this section of Euclid to come back to life. It's street wall is still mostly intact on both sides of the street. It's the only section of Euclid still dormant between Public Square and the Inner Belt. This project and the Truman Building will help it come back to life. Add in the Cleveland Athletic Club and the Breuer Tower and it will be a great street again. One step at a time, and the JHB buildings are an important step. Lights have been turned on, ventilated plywood on a number of windows, boxes of supplies set up inside and workers doing some sort of demo. I noticed that as well. I don't know if this would be the beginning of the renovation or just a stage in the environmental clean up that must take place before the overall project can qualify for financing.
February 21, 201213 yr Id love for this to finally start. These building and this stretch of Euclid have great potential. Im not a fan of converting one of the storefronts into a parking entrance though, especially when there is access from the back of the buildings. Im not sure if that is still part of the plan. I hope not! Coupled with the Statler garage entrance, you get a long, pedestrian unfriendly stretch. I hope that idea has been dropped.
February 21, 201213 yr A serious secondary benefit of a new hotel here, and also in the Schofield building, will be some nice new hotel bars on this middle stretch of downtown Euclid. I really hope Le Meridien happens.
February 21, 201213 yr I like the cut of your jib, Strap. :drunk: And anyone who has seen crowds at Panini's and WInking Lizard on game days realizes some more options are a good thing.
February 21, 201213 yr Le Meridien Was this ever confirmed? I know it was mentioned as a possibility. I really hope it happens, how great for Cleveland that would be!!
February 21, 201213 yr That's four new hotel brands in Cleveland, two right across the street from one another. I know MTS has a long list of those he would prefer, but at least we are seeing outside interest, and local developers really making a concerted effort to bring them in and get things done. In the past many would not have made such an effort (I mean look at what the Wolsteins had to do to make the Flats East Bank happen, even in its scaled back form...given their wealth did they really need all the headaches to make that happen). Needless to say, very encouraging.
February 21, 201213 yr If the LM is built, it would put a smile on my face. The newer LM's are very similar to W and Park Hyatt properties. That would be a BIG step up for Cleveland!
