Hah!  Some of these names are entertaining.  And it definitely is an interesting thought exercise.

  Looks sort of European.

In some ways, the state lines are just political hassles. Our economies are based on cities and their metro areas.

I wouldn't go that far--political boundaries do still matter for economies because of different tax and regulatory burdens.  Also, there's more to being a Senator than simply representing the exclusively economic interests of one's constituents.

I like the one called "Missouri".

It wouldn't be too cool to be a resident of North Coast, would it? With Cincy and Cbus in Sohio, there would be no strong economies left to bring home the bacon.

I like "Sabine" for some reason.  Largely because Sabine was a German girl's name, so the concept of a German name taking over New Orleans is somewhat entertaining.  Of course, it may very well be a common name in France, too. :-)

I was already looking up BEA statistics.  I'm glad I saw this post before I wrote something I would forever regret.

Major John Wesley Powell wanted the western states to be organized by watershed, because he knew that water resources were going to drive development.

You do realize that the 2008 GDP for the Cleveland MSA was higher (by about 7%) than the GDP for the Cincinnati MSA, despite MSA population estimates stating that the Cininnati MSA has a higher population, right?

No Ohio MSA (Columbus included) has much room to bash any others.

it is. :-)

If we have Sohio, I feel like some state in the South should be named Sunoco.

Northern Ohio should be called Standard Oil.  Sounds better than North Coast... a term I've always winced at.  How about Neo, as in Keanu Reeves?  Ever better: Western New England.

Ever better: Western New England.

So ... New Cornwall?

Alaska should be called Sohio.  Drill, baby, drill!

I like the one called "Missouri".

Best quote on this thread

Give Toledo back to the state of Detroit!

I would love for this to happen. North Coast, baby! Toledo-Sandusky-Cleveland need to be their own state.

That would be awesome! Bunch of boarded up factories, the destitute Browns and Cedar Point to make up for it all!

I should make some sort of comment about federalism here, but I'm too pleased by the previous two comments to be serious here.

Why does Pittsburgh get to remain the capital of the West Virginia region, but Cincy would be separated from Kintucky.  gapteeth.gif

We've got the lake, too!  Sohio won't be party to any Great Lakes water pacts...

Raw video: Dimora argues with reporter

Some of the things he says about the paper.

If we had a real newspaper in town we would have more success with our economic development and people won't be so discouraged. When is there every any positive news coming from that paper its always negative, negative every step of the way, never look for anything positive.

That paper is a rag and shouldn't be in business if you are going to write tabloid journalism. This paper is no better then the National Enquirer you know it and I know it. It goes on for like 4 minutes.

http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/political/corruption_probe/raw-video%3A-dimora-argues-with-reporter

we have a huge thread that discusses media in Cleveland.  You're preaching to the choir! Our media is one of our own worst enemies.

Mmmm fabricated moral outrage. That's the best kind.

I did think it was funny when he said that Gomez wouldn't have a job next year. I don't think Henry is the one that should be worried.

Tubbo is picking on a little guy!  What a stuttering idiot!

However, Dimora has a point. There is never any positive info in the PD.  The PD is ground zero for NE Ohio negativity.

True enough, but it's a false argument to deflect from the main issue. Dimora's mess is of his own making.

I thought he was 'removed' from his duties by the other two. Did I miss something? (NB: the answer is likely yes as I rarely read the local news.)

Bur aren't newspapers all like that?  I mean "good" news doesn't sell.  I suppose that if we were a tw0 or three newspaper town like NY, then the PD might be more Times like as oppsoed to NY Post or Daily News.  And in the case of Dimora - well its his own doing

Well it looks like Dimora has figured out half of the equation. The cronyism and corruption did nothing to bring the city down, it was all the PD's fault. Pot meet kettle...

Agree to both points!  However, the PD is overly damaging.

Here's an interesting article about how most of Cleveland's attractions, which are used by residents from across the region, are being mostly funded by Cuyahoga County residents:

http://www.clevelandleader.com/node/13788

The article is somewhat poorly written, but the point remains important.  Many of the region's greatest assets (sports stadia, convention center, etc.) are funded by Cuyahoga County residents, though these institutions are benefiting residents in many of the surrounding counties.  Should anything be done to change the funding structure?  If so, how might it be fixed?

The argument that people living outside the core city and county don't do much to financially support our cultural institutions is kind of weak, in my opinion.  Any time someone from outside the core buys a pack of gum, or a drink in a bar, or a pack of cigarettes, they pay the associated taxes.  The vast majority of their spending might not occur in the core, but at least some of it does (and probably a large portion of their entertainment dollars.)

The other point that came to me is that we citizens of the core have the privilege of voting for these taxes, either directly (e.g. Gateway) or through our elected representatives (e.g. Med Mart, via the county commissioners.)  If we disapprove, it's our prerogative to not renew Gateway or vote out the commissioners.  Joe Geauga and Linda Lorain don't have that choice, and that's the tradeoff.

Although I would likely support a more regional tax-sharing structure, I think the article is approaching the issue from the wrong angle.  Whether or not it's true, the "you owe us" argument hasn't done any good so far.  We can find a better approach.

a) So it makes sense that if I go to a bar near my house (in Cuyahoga County) that I should pay more for a drink than someone going to a bar near their house in Lake County, as an example?  We're not just paying those extra taxes downtown during games, we're paying for the luxury of having these sports teams around even when we go to a local establishment.  This extra tax is something that residents outside of Cuyahoga County do not pay for.

b) In the case of the Medical Mart, we didn't even get to vote on that, the Commissioners unilaterally decided to raise taxes on all county residents.

In all fairness, this is a problem that is caused by the professional sports leagues that pit cities against each other and blackmail us (the local taxpayers) into funding new stadiums.  But if we, as a region, decide that this is an expense worth taking on, then it shouldn't just be Cuyahoga County residents, who are increasingly becoming the least wealthy in the region.

http://www.western-star.com/news/lebanon-oh-news/kilburn-irate-to-see-help-for-poor-779485.html

"Kilburn irate to see help for poor":

County Commissioner Mike Kilburn launched his signature tirade about government spending and then stalked out of the Warren County Commission chambers, before his colleagues discussed and approved a new federal grant at its Tuesday, June 22 meeting.

Kilburn said it makes him “sick” to see programs, like one to help the working poor from becoming homeless, continue. Kilburn has long maintained that the government has no business financing social problems.

“As long as 51 percent of the county commissioners continue to put up with these stupid programs we’re never going to climb out of this mess,” he said. “I can’t restrain myself, this is the biggest namby-pamby state program I’ve ever seen in my life. This is the epitome of why this country is going broke. Not only are we going to help people, but we are going to prevent things from happening.”

The guy has to reflect the mentality of the voters around Warren County. So I can't vent about him very much. The "blame" rests with locals here.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/18/elect-the-willfully-ignorant_n_766659.html?ref=fb&src=sp

From UCB Comedy comes this hilarious mock campaign ad for Michael Sharp, a "candidate" for U.S. Senate with one of the most original campaign strategies we've ever heard. Running on a platform of willful ignorance may seem like a bad idea, but based on what some of the other 2010 midterm election candidates have been saying, it's not so far off base. Sharp is an honest guy who honestly doesn't want to learn anything new ever again. Ever.

Listen to what Sharp promises to do if elected, and see if he sounds anything like the people who are really running for Senate this fall

So what are your thoughts?

Is this something Kasich can actually stop at this stage in the game?

Should we begin assembling an army to take on C-bus?

What dates would be best to rally?  (maybe dates when colleges are on break)

Who benefits by not building this?

I'm not one who gets fired up much and I haven't followed every detail of this project, but I firmly believe this project is being cherry picked politically.

This creates jobs!  limitless economic development!  sustained ways of living! potential for HSR!.......  All for 400 mil seems like a deal to me!!!

How much does ODOT spend on highways?    How many BILLIONS?

I can carpool up to 3 others from Cincinnati. Oakiehigh?

It would be the best to rally when Kasich is actually there

Uh, I'm all for the 3C thing and I think Kasich is a blithering idiot for making this his cause celebre, but "limitless economic development"? There is a legitimate question to be asked - where do we get the maintenance dollars? That at least could have been debated. Instead, it's "kill the project".

Still, on topic, I don't like Kasich's attitude so far. This is why I voted against him. He's for a number of things I'm also for, but...ugh. Throwing away rail in the name of earmark reform. Viva America...where the trains are slower than in China.

I would be alright with this if he deferred, not canceled, the 3C project and used the money for general infrastructure improvement, forward budget planning and maintenance instead. I wouldn't like it, but I'd accept it. Just canceling it and not getting the money is stupid.

Count me in!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the money cannot be used for anything else.  Deferred?  Then the cost increases and that give them proponents another reason to say its a waste of money.

You should consider 'satelite' rallies in Cleveland and Cincy.
