Posted March 3, 20223 yr A bit surprised there wasn't already a topic for Akron music already (if there is any I just missed it, apologies, please redirect this post there). Anyway, a good way to kick this off might be with a podcast on Akron's music legacy. WKSU has a right up about the podcast below. https://www-wksu-org.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.wksu.org/arts-culture/2022-02-10/akrons-history-comes-alive-through-music-in-podcast-performance-series?_amp=true And here is a link to the actual podcasts site https://www.rootsofamericanmusic.org/rootsrearview In more contemporary news, the Akron Symphony is collaborating with Earthquaker Devices for an electric orchestra concert. For those that don't know, Earthquaker is a boutique effect pedal manufacturer, making pedals for electric guitars and synths by hand in Akron. Check out the article below, there is a video of a solo violinist playing through the effect pedals, I was pleasantly surprised. https://www.wksu.org/shuffle/2022-03-03/earthquaker-symphony-creates-a-confluence-of-classical-and-electronic-music

May 12, 20223 yr Author A bit of Akron history along with some live music this weekend. Take a musical 'Sentimental Journey' to Akron's Summit Beach Park Quote What were the sounds of summer in Akron eight decades ago? You can find out Friday night with a tribute to popular Ohio bandleader Clyde McCoy and his shows at Summit Beach amusement park. ... “It’s a 16-piece big band,” Rubin said. “[We have] five saxophones, three trumpets, three trombones, rhythm [section], and trumpet soloist. We have a Slingerland Radio King drum set from 1945 with the original calf heads on it — the exact same brand of drum set that Clyde McCoy’s drummer used. Drum sets today have changed significantly in sound and sonics and size, and it really helps to have that and the symbols and everything from that era.” Rubin said his orchestra will perform in uniforms designed just like those seen on 1930s and 40s bands – and they’ll swing and sway behind music stands from that era, just as they do when paying tribute to other bands, such as Ted Lewis’. https://www.ideastream.org/news/take-a-musical-sentimental-journey-to-akrons-summit-beach-park

August 16, 20222 yr Author Akron's Kenmore neighborhood wants to be 'Music Row' AUTHOR: Kabir Bhatia PUBLISHED: August 16, 2022 "Tina Boyes, head of the Kenmore Neighborhood Alliance, has been working since 2017 to make Kenmore Boulevard exciting again. For every new business, there are still spaces like the former Hairston Appliance store that’s quietly waiting for a new tenant. Boyes began consulting with Dallas-based Better Block five years ago on how to make the boulevard more walkable. They added bike lanes. They filled a vacant lot with art and turned it into a courtyard for community meetings. And then she came to a realization: Kenmore is a music neighborhood. “We've got recording studios, [and] we've got the two guitar shops directly across the street,” she said. “The Rialto Theater [is a] regional music venue.”" https://www.ideastream.org/news/akrons-kenmore-neighborhood-wants-to-be-music-row

August 8, 2024Aug 8 "How Akron Became ‘the New Liverpool’ of Punk Music" Devo achieved international success throughout the 1970s and ‘80s with their surrealist “de-evolution” concepts and instantly recognizable art punk sound. But before they hit it big, they were a part of a wave of punk and new wave musicians coming out of Akron, Ohio. How did all of these wildly creative bands —Tin Huey, the Bizarros, the Rubber City Rebels and Chi-Pig, among others — grow out of the Rubber City at the same time? August 9, 2024Aug 9 ^ that is absolutely fantastic -- and i love how it really turns the good, but sometimes pretentious house shows movement on its head. 😂🤘
August 9, 2024Aug 9 When I say "old" I mean "same age as me" haha. My band used to play out with Fifth Wheel they were nice guys and maybe could have gone somewhere. There were of course a LOT of decent bands in NE Ohio but most of them suffered from pretty bad production and live sound was typically not very good in the venues. I mean, there were nights out where you just couldn't even hear lyrics 😹 Edited August 9, 2024Aug 9 by surfohio

I don't wanna throw the term PTSD out there lightly, but yeah. Our band was The Albino Tree Frogs. We had a good run playing The Daily Double, Peabody's Down Under, Grog and everywhere else. Because we existed prior to 1996 there is virtually no record of our existence, which I am mostly thankful for.

I'd say same for the later underground punk 2.0 scene, which interestingly did not seem to cross-pollinate....Akron and Cleveland had their own separate scenes.
