This is needed...Toledoans suffers from the Eeyore syndrome big time. Along with this I notice they are running commericals on how "Toledo is on the move" funded by the Toledo Blade. I assume these ads are some how related to this Toledo pride thing.

Mayor gives pep talk at model block event

Program targets 24 north end blocks

By TOM TROY

Mayor Carty Finkbeiner mixed scolding with inspirational pep talk yesterday as he started a two-week "model block" effort in a 24-block area in North Toledo.

As the third such effort of Mr. Finkbeiner's current term, city agencies concentrate efforts such as alley cleaning, tree trimming, police enforcement, and nuisance inspection to spruce up an area.

The mayor directed pointed remarks toward a group of young black men who had joined other residents, city officials, and news reporters and photographers for the news conference in front of 1921 Locust St., which had been demolished earlier in the day.

TOLEDO SHOWS ITS PRIDE

A new sign that will advertise 'Toledo Pride' when completed is attached to the pedestrian fencing on the Nebraska Avenue bridge over I-75. David Welch, commissioner of streets, bridges, and harbor, said the six-foot-tall message promotes Mayor Carty Finkbeiner's campaign to boost civic pride. He said the sign is similar to one that spans I-75 in Findlay.

Safety more vital than signs, Santiago says

Candidate calls on Finkbeiner to boost police over city 'pride' Santiago

By TOM TROY

Taking issue with the mayor who helped her get appointed, interim at-large Toledo Councilman Lourdes Santiago called on the administration yesterday to turn its attention from "Toledo Pride" to neighborhood safety.

Ms. Santiago, who is seeking to retain the seat in the Nov. 7 election, took aim at the tall, red letters on the Nebraska Avenue bridge over I-75 spelling out the two-word slogan the mayor has chosen for his administration. "I say no more signs. No more rah-rah until our citizens feel safe," she said. "Police presence in our neighborhoods must be increased."

Ms. Santiago and other council members and council candidates have called on Mayor Carty Finkbeiner to hire more police officers in 2007 because of a recent spate of murders.
