May 13, 20223 yr Great photos. It’s been a good 15 years since I’ve been to Memphis, but I like it and it’s definitely a place with character. It is a little depressing to see that the stunning Sterick building is still sat empty. I just had a quick Google and it’s seems it’s been that way since the 80s. A real shame. My hovercraft is full of eels

I remember my first major trip into southern cities in 2009. The vacant Sterick in Memphis and vacant Leer Tower/Thomas Jefferson Hotel in Birmingham really stood out to me, both standing tall and abandoned in their respective downtowns. The Thomas Jefferson building in Birmingham has fortunately been renovated.

If you visit Little Rock, Arkansas, they will tell you that Memphis is a metropolis because the city snagged Fed Ex away from Little Rock in 1973.
