One of the true rustbelt-like cities in the South.

@ink put on his blue suede shoes
And he boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain ...

Great photos. It’s been a good 15 years since I’ve been to Memphis, but I like it and it’s definitely a place with character. It is a little depressing to see that the stunning Sterick building is still sat empty. I just had a quick Google and it’s seems it’s been that way since the 80s. A real shame.

My hovercraft is full of eels

^Their tallest building is also completely vacant.

Thanks for sharing a nice photo tour of Memphis. I need to revisit the city. Those 2-3 story tall brick buildings are sweet !

Yes, indeed. I remember my first major trip into southern cities in 2009. The vacant Sterick in Memphis and vacant Leer Tower/Thomas Jefferson Hotel in Birmingham really stood out to me, both standing tall and abandoned in their respective downtowns. The Thomas Jefferson building in Birmingham has fortunately been renovated.

Memphis used to be the largest city in Tennessee not too long ago. What happened to make it seem like a dying town?

You can tell it was still quite an important city through the '60s.

Memphis, you have a way more interesting building vernacular than I expected.

Almost always the same issue with most dying towns......lack of positive growth oriented leadership.

Some mood music from Cleveland's own Marc Cohn!

edit - ha now i see @Gramarye beat me to the punch
