Example of Chester, PA.  The town was promised that new highway interchanges would result in an economic boom. They were really only for a proposed soccer stadium that was built.  The town ended up filing bankruptcy because the economic return never happened.

The economic development potential of intercity passenger rail and the fact that we have long been in a state of diminishing returns on economic development for a long time needs to be part of our message somehow:

Lol I was just in Barcelona in early November and a tour guide complained of cyclists "they think they own this city. We're not the Netherlands."

I would expect to see a difference in roadway maintenance expense after several years in a bike-heavy city vs. a car-heavy city.   Some urban planning professor/student should look into that...

America has no idea how to build, sustain and protect cities. And the few places that are vibrant like this are so expensive to live in. Why? Limited supply. And so we blame each other rather than fix it.

New in New Jersey: Abandoned rail tracks set to become N.J.’s newest hiking, bike trail

Published: Jul. 03, 2023
By Jackie Roman | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

The abandoned Rahway Valley Railroad tracks in Union County are one step closer to becoming a multi-use trail system with an infusion of $1.5 million from a federal program dedicated to “non-traditional” transportation projects.

The Rahway Valley Railroad operated in northern New Jersey from 1897 until it closed in 1992. At its height, the railroad was nearly 12 miles long, including the 7.1 mile long mainline and three branch lines, according to a historical account from the National Parks Service. The railroad traversed Roselle Park, Kenilworth, Union, Springfield, Summit and Maplewood.

Why walk when you can ride?

Citi Bike announced on Twitter that the bike-share system had a record-breaking month for riders this past July, with over 3.76 million trips taken throughout the entire month.

“Keep it up and let’s see how many rides you take in August! Will you break the record again?” Citi Bike said on Twitter.

The city will host walking tours in September and October as part of a study of the Cross Bronx Expressway that is meant to find ways to lessen the highway’s negative impacts on surrounding communities while keeping the artery intact.

No joke: Feds are banning funny messages on highway signs

By The Associated Press

Published: Jan. 17, 2024

PHOENIX (AP) — It’s no joke. Humorous and quirky messages on electronic signs will soon disappear from highways and freeways across the country.

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has given states two years to implement all the changes outlined in its new 1,100-page manual released last month, including rules that spells out how signs and other traffic control devices are regulated.

Administration officials said overhead electronic signs with obscure meanings, references to pop culture or those intended to be funny will be banned in 2026 because they can be misunderstood or distracting to drivers.

Have they done any research into how effective they are just in general? This looks like yet another example of how the transportation industry is based on the whims of senior officials instead of actual data.

It was almost like building a post-war country around endless subdivisions and strip malls was never about creating good communities, but about ensuring we were chained to the car and gas lobbies' product forever. Mission accomplished.

Same as with any other project. Establish a vision, organize a constituency for it, get a project sponsor/fiscal agent, secure planning funds, create a construction-ready plan, secure construction funds, build it.
