September 15, 20222 yr Author I find South Bend disappointing...at least downtown. Lots of imposing buildings with dead space in between. All the filler buildings have become parking lots and pocket parks.

I just find the "stuff" they do have to be impressive + a wonderful riverfront trail/park. September 15, 20222 yr South Bend has morphed over the years. The economic drivers of the town are the hospital system and Notre Dame which is NE of downtown. As seen the last few years with COVID, there is not the demand for a huge concentrated job base in downtown towers anymore. This is playing out even more so in 2nd tier cities like SB, Dayton, Fort Wayne, etc. The large admin staffs that filled up the glass towers can now work remote or even international.

Most of my architecture knowledge is based off observation but even I know this is so wrong. September 16, 20222 yr Not sure what the development's called, but one thing I'll give South Bend credit for is this really great new neighborhood they developed next to that Eddy Street Commons (south of campus) - Just a few years ago, it was an urban prairie eye sour, but now it's a beautiful neighborhood with houses that fit in so well with South Bend's architecture that they actually could be mistaken for being historic. I mean how often do you see authentic 20s-era English Tudor homes built these days?! 2011: 2022:
September 17, 20222 yr I was looking around South Bend a little on Google maps and saw this interesting industrial building rehab, where they seem to have encased the building in glass. I kind of think it looks cool.
